Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

After a few posts on this thread, happy to say i’m now a Spyder owner and very happy.

Condition is immaculate and absolutely stunning, great 4hr chat and handover as a private buy and credit to previous owner

I think this one might be with me for a long time and get driven. Owner of a 968CS which I’ve had for 8 years and did 25,000 fun miles in it.

I’ve been reading this thread and got back to Page 960 so far, if only it had it’s own sub group [;)]

PS any good recommendations for a shower cape, even though roof isn’t too bad to put on (after a few lessons for previous owner) plus being a Lotus Elise S2 111s and 111r owner, being in Scotland a quicker option for parking up would be useful.

thanks,

ian

Just traded my Boxster 981S for a 718 Spyder. There are pros and cons with that move, but the wheels were chipped on handover and I have the opportunity to re-spray them now. The attractive Champagne colour works on some backdrops such as black but I am not inspired by them on GT Silver (see pic). Trying to decide between Satin Black and Satin Platinum. I have a photo of Platinum wheels from the used models webpage but can't find a Black at the moment. I would be grateful if any members had a similar profile photo of Satin Black on a GT Silver Spyder for comparison purposes.

Thank you in advance.

I would be interested to hear your list of pros v cons in meantime if you want to fast forward to 9.50 secs you can hear his final conclusions which I did identify with after a 2 hour test drive in a 718

[link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3cUd5QhEkA]Watch This Before You Buy A Porsche 718 Spyder - YouTube[/link]

I did fast forward and watched it about a minute ago. I can't remember a single word he said other than: 'It doesn't feel special'. He probably needs to read more books and broaden his vocabulary. I'm going to reply quickly based on 3 days of driving across motorways, A/Bs and in tandem with another Spyder owner in the mountains, in order to keep this real. I would expect to amend this opinion in the weeks to come as I learn the car more and bond with it. All thoughts are based on my short history of the Porkers I have owned (5) and the many different marques over the years.

Pros:

1. Steering

2. Suspension

3. Engine

4. Looks

5. Options such as heated seats, steering wheel, etc

Cons:

1. Soundtrack

2. Gearing

3. Soundtrack

4. Wheel colour

5. Soundtrack

I almost turned around one hour driving away from the dealership and returned for the previous car I had reserved, a pristine Carmine Red 981 Boxster GTS with 13k on the clock. I blew it out when I discovered the zero options on it (phone, satnav, radio etc) and contrary to the dealer's belief, we could not order the new PCM unit from the Tequipment catalogue. Incredible. Now I have had 3 days in a masterpiece of engineering, owned a 981S and been in touching distance of the GTS, I understand what is important to me. The soundtrack on the 981S with PSE is never lost on those who drive with me and they all disbelieve it has not been re-mapped etc. The GTS sounded great even at idle. More of the power more of the time compared to a rocket of a Spyder where I am constantly working the gears to get it to sing to me, and then still get disappointed. Balance that with the outrageous handing improvement, feels like 20-30% faster turning in. I was getting a little tired of the woolly steering on the 981 and had a tyre sidewall blow out on me (probably through my own abuse) 2 weeks ago. Always felt I was pushing a little beyond what it was intended for, I already feel that is unlikely to happen with the Spyder. I've no interest in anything other than a curiosity venture around the track and I haven't had the radio on for more than 5 mins since I owned it. I thought I was driving an EV for part of the time yesterday, in keeping with the traffic conditions. Sounds better at idle than it does at 30 from the cockpit. I'm sure the Pros will only become more appreciated, it's simply the best handling car I've ever driven (many of the usual suspects tried) and that includes the 991.2 4GTS I owned for a year, but I just can't find the soul of the car, which is what I came to Porsche for. 981 Spyder would be a better fit for me which I suspected all along, but the practicality of the 981 GTS is probably the sweet spot, especially if I was to spend a bit of money on it at somewhere like RPM Technik. The YouTube dude hinted at the same by saying it was "...too cold..." No idea what he meant by "...too serious...". It has a character all of its own, but will still lack soul to some.

A good few cars over list unfortunately now days don't agree with it to be honest .

Especially if denied new car prices .
I was surprised by this one a 718 Spyder ordered June 2022 was delivered March 23!

9 Months delivery for a GT car

That's enough to burst a few myths on these very rare limited production runs [&:]

Thanks, if you still have the shower cap great.

I was looking at those ones.

I did find a picture from you while doing a google search but then lost it.

I don't think the delivery time has been an issue for those "invited" to buy one, just that unless you are one of the "privileged", "pre allocated", "DP favourite buyer" etc, you are extremely unlikely to be in a position to even be "allowed" to order one....................

Bill

Thanks for update and I guess that makes sense from sign off to delivery 9 months but who knows how long before they were asked to sign it off they had been on the maybe / maybe not list :ROFLMAO:

The time has come to sell my 987 Spyder Oct 2011.

I purchased it at the time from Porsche Glasgow. Metallic Black and has the important bits, manual, carbon buckets, black spider alloys. Sports exhaust, Chrono etc. Approx 26k miles. Full Porsche Glasgow service history. In fact every single thing it’s ever had done, even tyres has been at Porsche Glasgow who can vouch for the car. I have a big file/history with every single receipt etc. Porsche Extended Warranty till November 2024 and just had a health check done yesterday at the OPC so it’s ready for sale. If you need any more info please DM. Thanks

The market has spoken £84500 [link=https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2021-porsche-718-spyder-1]2021 PORSCHE 718 SPYDER - 3,850 MILES (collectingcars.com)[/link]
