flat6, Third link down on the right hand side of your latest video has the horrid American Spyder with the (wrong) red wheels and dodgy graphics! [:'(]

Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Excellent summary of exactly what I felt after my morning session in the fantastic 981. On the road I can confirm roof up or down the ease of speed would be something to worry about compared to the much noisier and more nervous/lively seat of the pants feel the Spyder delivers A 981 Spyder with the sport chassis could be awesome beyond belief if the S is anything to go by so if Porsche are following this forum PLEASE bring it on sooner rather than later in the models life []ORIGINAL: rob.kellock Nail on head! 981 far exceeds my limited ability too - it was amazing at the PEC, on the low friction circuit with all the electronics on, it completely "protected" itself, by contrast, on the handling circuit the PDK car I drove would probably leave me trailing behind in my Spyder if that makes sense, it was a delight. At least with the Spyder's roof I reduce the risk of speeding points on the motorway and get a good mpg, I suspect that with the coupe like smoothness of a 981 with the roof up I would probably commit greater indiscretions!
So the big question is. Will they make a Spyder version of the New Boxster?[8|]ORIGINAL: daro911Excellent summary of exactly what I felt after my morning session in the fantastic 981. I have been reading this thread with interest. The Spyder is a sensational looking car and drives even better than it looks no doubt. They look great value for money and may be a future classic in about 20years. I would have one in a flash if it was not my everyday car. The roof is just not practical for leaving it outside and for travelling to work I just would not have the time to take the roof on and off. As for our inclement weather I know I would not be taking the roof on and off as much as i do now. Now if a Spyder was an occasional car & garaged. Would I have one? You bet. So when its time to change my 08 Boxster it will have to be practical ie a fast roof and yes at the very least heated seats for those early mornings and late nights coming out of work in the winter. At the moment I am thinking something special like a used Black Limited Edtion Boxster S 320 bhp or the new 981 that would not hold so much value but a nice car. Decisions. I can see Johns point about heated seats. That is the one optional extra that i will never go without. Tracy
It's a future classic now!! Roof is fine for leaving outside, mine has never let any water in when parked. I personally wouldn't want to own one without a garage though.ORIGINAL: CLIFFWILKINS may be a future classic in about 20years.
Rob Parts of your post 105 say:- " I was worried that my Mrs would not like the buckets" and "In fact she loves the buckets" Are you sure these Spyders are waterproof?[][][]ORIGINAL: rob.kellockIt's a future classic now!! Yeah, you wonder why these people think they can do a better job than how it arrived out of the factory. Here are the last 2 installments of video pleasure. The second one is probably you on the EVO Triangle[] http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=d4KN7lEbNaQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u81WmGgp8BU&feature=relatedORIGINAL: rob.kellock flat6, Third link down on the right hand side of your latest video has the horrid American Spyder with the (wrong) red wheels and dodgy graphics! It's not just me that says they're OK to live with in our climate [] http://pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=1198749&mid=0&i=60&nmt=official+boxster+spyder+rarer+than+caymanR%21&mid=0 Should it be garaged - yes I think so, but I wouldn't leave any soft top outside over winter in particular. Security- if someone is going to cut a soft top to gain entry, they'll cut any soft top. If they want to steal the car to sell, they'll lift it, or any car. As the video daro911 shows, it takes 2 minutes to put up the roof in that slow motion training video. At normal human speeds you can guess how long it takes. Still, the Boxster Spyder isn't for everyone, we know that[] The Black Edition, yes, is probably the nicest Boxster S. A note about the Black Edition. From a performance perspective, that only gets you the extra few bhp. Weight saving and a bespoke suspension is what makes the Boxster Spyder. I needn't discuss what makes the looks and makes the Boxster a Spyder[]
Lovin the video of my left hand drive counterpart - my car is otherwise identical looking to that. Mmm, wonder what the weather is doing this weekend - my wife is away, the EVO triangle is calling!
Weather is sunny and very cold 6' down in London town [8D]ORIGINAL: rob.kellock Lovin the video of my left hand drive counterpart - my car is otherwise identical looking to that. Mmm, wonder what the weather is doing this weekend - my wife is away, the EVO triangle is calling!
I reckon Porsche don't even know yet for sure. If I had to guess it would be that they won't. The roof, as good as it is, obviously put off too many of the Boxster clientele, who obviously aren't the hardcore driving purists that Porsche thought they were[]. Porsche stuck their neck out producing a car that would usually be reserved for £140,000+ 911 limited edition exotica, and they got snubbed by their customers. If they don't do another manual roof, and the fact that the 981 makes more extensive use of aluminium, they won't be able to save much weight (purely a speculation). Maybe there'll be a Boxster 'R', with a few modifications to make it stand out and the best options, such as the coming 981 sport chassis. Like the 997 Carrera GTS, maybe they'll give it centre locks which "reduce rotating masses" (but are a pain to remove from what i've been told). My guess is that they'll make more effort with the Cayman R next time around. It doesn't have the roof issue and they really didn't put much effort into differentiating it this time around. They didn't even give it a uniquely revised front end like the Spyder (spoiler tips, lights). No disrespect to Cayman R owners. It's a brilliant car but they could've given it more of a motorsport flavour, being a coupe, even if it doesn't have a motorsport association like the GT3 RS. But neither does the GT2 any more.ORIGINAL: jdpef356 So the big question is. Will they make a Spyder version of the New Boxster?[8|]
Rob you should have taken John for a spin in those conditions to prove hot chairs are for wimps [8D]ORIGINAL: rob.kellockDon't mind the cold Rob, I think it hit -9 over the Welsh hills that day. No heated seats either ;-)
Nice pic - the contrast of ice and open top [] I'd join you on the EVO triangle but i'm going to the Topgear Live show at the NEC on Saturday. Sunday is looking no go either []ORIGINAL: rob.kellockDon't mind the cold Rob, I think it hit -9 over the Welsh hills that day. No heated seats either ;-)
John needs no convincing, it's his wife! That red car from Nottingham would be on his drive otherwise!! My son is off to Top Gear on Saturday but he is going with his auntie and her fella. I will tell him to keep his eyes out for your Spyder.
I won't be in the Spyder as it can't hold 3 (although we've seen that it can[] ) John will soon be put out of his misery. I read a bit more of that PH thread. Seems there are a few people watching the last OPC car. Won't be around for long. As soon as someone comes along who wants that spec it'll be gone at that price. Could Spyders soon be extinct at OPC's!
Keep it dry 24/7 I say flat6ORIGINAL: flat6 Nearly as good as your pic Rob[]. I need to start taking more pics of my own Spyder.
Perfect recipe for a caption competition: Him: "don't worry love, it's just a passing shower". Her "I told you that leaving the roof at home to save weight was a bad idea".
