If so, what's the point lol Needs to go vs the Lotus Evora, the only same sort of car in class and price.

So many different types of cars in so many different categories and how cars fit into the categories and straddle them is anyone's opinion. IMHO, which is worth nothing but to myself, I would never consider a Porsche and a Lotus as alternatives. Even the Spyder i'd consider as luxury compared to an Elise. If Porsche aimed the 981 at Lotus that's a very small market to go after. I woudn't even aim the Cayman R at Lotus. IMHO, the huge markets that Porsche is aiming for deeper penetration in with the 981, needs a car that fulfills 2 criteria - great to drive and easy to live with. The competition does well with the latter, but when they make hot versions to achieve the former, the end product isn't as polished as a design that intrisically set out to achieve both. I'd like to see Porsche produce a car like the Alfa Romeo 4C / Lotus, but the 981 isn't that car. The 4c is very light ~900Kg, compact and does 0 to 62mph in just 4.5 secs from just 240bhp. However, will it be as easy to drive it well, or as easy to live with?

biggest market for the Cayman is 911 owners imo one's who are not as rich as they thought they were now 991 prices are 100k new lol Cayman has never been a great seller, I loved mine and I hope to be in one again soon. As for cars like Audi TT etc they are 1/2 the price, My top end TTRS was 42k new I spec up a new Cayman and it's £63k a base TT is what 25k ? if you want a drivers fast sport coupe, I only see the Evora as a car that goes head to head with it for the 60k mark as a do it all rounder. I also think the Boxtser sales will do far better than past models, it's a far better car for the normal person , now has a great fully auto roof and is cheaper than a Cayman. Not really sure where this Cayman market is, the rich like the 911 brand, the poor cannot afford it, the car nut spends his hard earned money 2nd hand at 30k ish. Hence why I say Cayman sales will come from 997 911 owners who cannot now afford a 991 model. only my view thinking out loud anyway.

My son owns an Elise and is involved with the Lotus owners Club and a number of Elise owners have moved on into a Spyder they see the Spyder not as an equal but as the next step on the ladder a car with the same characteristics but a bit more usable. Geoff

I hear you Geoff. Makes sense.

You have a good point Mr Demon and i've expressed a similar view in the past, that Porsche has failed to give the Cayman it's own identity, which is essential to grab the attention of a particular demographic and for them to quickly understand why they should buy this car. Instead, they focussed on positioning it away from the 911 but not really emphasising a position of it's own. Hence, Cayman sales were slow and only those who could see the Cayman for what it is admired it. The looks of the new one puts it close to the 991 in stature, which I don't know is a good, bad, or confusing thing. Might that just work in it's favour i.e. could it be the shrewd choice to go for a car that looks as good as the 991 Carrera inside and out but saves you a wedge of cash. I've no idea whether the uninitiated will perceive it that way. Looking at it that way round poses the question, why does Porsche continue with the Carrera? (obviously it's the massive profits vs a 981 as some just want a 911 regardless). Why not start the 911 range at the 'S' and unshackle the 981 (will never happen), or better still, just let the 981 overlap with the Carrera on performance because the Carrera isn't bought by speed junkies who compare the performance stats of all the cars. The Boxster has an identity as a fun roadster but IMHO a coupe needs to be perceived as 'top dog' in something or in some way. Cayman needs a GTS or R more than Boxster does, even if just make people take notice of the model, even if the majority subsequently go for the S instead of the R because of budget or comfort. (But, I have to repeat, the new car is great in standard form, so doesn't need an R version to blow me away with the handling. Keeping a lid on it's power might frustrate me though. With that, i'd like to see a GTS) It does appear that they've put a lot of work into making the 981 Cayman a great driver's car and that will be it's distinct identity i.e. the Cayman's drive is distinctive from Boxster and 991, but you need people to get behind the wheel to find that out[8|]. Will Porsche achieve that? Only time will tell and you could be right that history will repeat itself, but I hope not[:)]

P.S. Should've said ... like to see a GTS, with a power hike even if no 'R' treatment elsewhere. If they go for racier set-up they should go all the way and do a Renn-Sport version. Stripped out and completely uncompromising. Not many would stretch to the heady price tag or want to live with the extreme version and as such it wouldn't be a threat to 991 sales numbers. We can dream can't we[:)]

[:D] It does win the award for least obvious picture of a Spyder. Dr Spyder's Spyder no less!! It has been a good day for Spydermen today, I'll let John expand further unless he's too modest. Incidentally, great to meet you this morning John - apologies my car was filthy - it was clean when I left home and is clean again now!

[:D] I'll be saving that one to my computer. Then again, you might the wrong idea[:-] [:D]

Gents I'm far to modest to say much about the goings on this weekend. The only thing I would say is keep reading your Porsche Post.[&:] Likewise it was good to meet Rob - I did take a look your car Rob paying special attention to the Wheel centre badge and the tyre valve. I am pleased to report all four were pointing in the correct direction[;)]. Would have taken mine but exit road from our village was flooded so had to take the Heavyweight![;)]

[][][] Hope you didn't look too closely! By the time I got home, the car was pretty much the dirtiest it has ever been. There was a lot of salt on the M6 and I must remember to top up my screen wash. You won't catch me out on crests to valves - my local garage has even replicated the concept with my BMW without me even asking when it had new rubber fitted last summer! Car is all tucked away now, ready for club night on Wednesday.

Just back from PC Cambridge. I took the car just to satisfy myself that everything was in order. Please to say she passed the 111 point check and more importantly the Diagnostics check run did not report a single error.[:D]

Great to see such a shiny Spyder and topless too [8D] Does motoring get any better than this £ for £[:D]

John, that is one clean Spyder! As this legendary thread quickly approaches 25000 hits, yes that is not a typo, we need Spydermen, Spyder lovers and Boxster lovers to cash in on this popularity and shamelessly plug the next PCGB track day. With 12 days to go, we NEED 12 more Porsches to sign up for the Anglesey track day on Saturday 27th April to sell the event out. The weather forecast is good, the circuit is looking forward to hosting us. Flat6 and I will be there flying the flag for Spyders, Chester OPC will be there with a new 991 and at least 3 of the Club's Directors are giving their support including the Chairman the Vice Chairman and the Director of Motorsport. I cannot stress strongly enough for anybody wavering about their first track day, there will be no greater opportunity than this to enjoy your car safely at the speeds its maker designed it for. This will be a brilliant day.
