It was just the other day I was talking about the 997.1 turbo being my choice to scratch that 911 itch. Interesting what you say about it and how the Spyder compares. Do you miss the turbo's power & torque at all? I haven't driven a turbo yet.ORIGINAL: Stuartelec Before the Spyder i was driving a 2007 911 Turbo with a tiptronic box but this left me a bit cold as i felt removed from the driving experience, before the Turbo i had owned an E46 M3 SMG and a 2005 911C4S with Short Shift and PSE. Before then, due to the nature of my work at the time, i had generally run a series of bangers. The Spyder purchase was a total impulse, i had been to the Bristol OPC to sort out the service on my 911 and the Spyder was sat in the showroom, i hadn't ever seen one in the flesh before, (Two days after buying it GeeForce drives past me), I was blown away with how pretty the car is. Managed to get a test drive there and then and fell completly in love with it. Took me all of ten mins and and a quick chat with my better half and it was mine. What did it for me was the way it handled and how much i felt part of the driving experience, it put the fun back into driving for me after the, i suppose, seriousness of the Turbo. Couldn't ask for a better toy. It ticks all my boxes in what i wanted from a car.
And to add to the list, from what you say the Spyder will provide the more involved experience whilst the turbo would be the softer, comfortable GT car. From your experience, do you think they'd make a good pair side by side?ORIGINAL: flat6 05/07/13 Yep i'd like a 997 Gen 1 turbo. A few reasons really. I'd like it to be the daily workhorse and the Spyder becomes a weekend/summer car. Therefore, I don't want to spend twice as much on a newer one. I'd like to keep the Spyder, so the price of an early 997 turbo works favourably towards that. I want to stop buying cars for a while (to spend money on other things), which would mean the turbo would be kept nearly as long as the Spyder (however long that may be). With that in mind (and general running costs aside) I see the gen 1 997 turbo as the most reliable amongst gen 1 997 cars. Buying a non-Mezger engined gen 1 997 feels like a scarier prospect to keep beyond warrantable age, with the IMS concern. The Mezger is pretty much bullet proof. Also, the newer cars have so much tech that I wouldn't want to keep them beyond warrantable age either. PTV, dynamic engine mounts etc. etc. are great innovations but I just feel I couldn't dare own one of those cars into old age (the car's old age I mean!) when all these expensive components start to need maintenance. So, the 997.1 turbo just fits. I also think they'd make a complementary pair: RWD vs AWD mid-engined vs rear-engined normally aspirated vs forced induction / turbocharged lightweight vs fully loaded open car vs coupe So together they cover pretty much everything i'd like to experience in cars and having them both at the same time would be great for highlighting and appreciating the attributes of each. [Well, that's the theory anyway!]
