ORIGINAL: Stuartelec The Turbo was a nice car to drive and very comfortable, the speed is like nothing else i have ever driven, Its very easy to drive quickly. I agree with was you say about them being a complementary pair and having driven both, i dont really miss the power of the Turbo, although i was a lot of fun to hit a straight and hit the go pedal. The way the Spyder drives appeals to me and what i use it for ( Second Car / toy). Funily enough i had a simlar conversation with one of the guys at Bristol OPC and after driving the new 991, i came to the conclusion that i would reather have a maual 997 GTS than the new 991 To be honest with you i slightly prefered my 997.1 C4S to the turbo, but i am sure that is because it had the short shift manual box. ( See the recuring theme here) and not for any other reason ( it was my also my first Porsche so holds a special place in my heart). Power wise the turbo was in a class of its own and still put a smile on my face every time i drove it. The Turbo is defenalty one to look at as a GT car, i didn't have a single problem with mine and if i was to have two cars in my stable i would go the down the route you are looking at. As i said, the Spyder was a massive impuse buy, that ticked more of my driving boxes than the Turbo did and i couldn't have both. All i can recommend is to go out and test drive one, you will be blown away by the power and the ease of how it drives and i would be intersted to hear your thought on how they stack up side by side in your eyes. Stu
Thanks Stu I'll have to go drive one. I've been putting it off because I don't yet have a concrete plan to fund getting one. The plan is to be in a position to do it next year. It'd be a manual that i'd go for rather than the Tip, but i'd probably drive both just get a perspective. The GTS is a also a car ive previously thought about and would take PDK. Drove one for about a week and it was rapid when kept in the right gear but I just get the impression that with the wider, flatter peak torque curve of the turbo, it'll be quick even when not even thinking about being in the right gear. [620Nm from 1950 to 5000rpm(overboost to 680Nm between 2100 to 4000rpm) vs 420Nm at 4200rpm]

Thanks F6. Couple more pics from the R24 weekend event at Kimbolton Castle - we had approx fifteen cars in the ring for 50years of 911 (and another thirty on the stand) the red cars stayed for the 2nd act - the motorcycle stunt rider!

I think Red John has just got the edge on the shine ....John what polish do you use ?? Was thinking of getting that Polymer type sealer and detailed done to mine ,its amazing how many light swirl marks are on mine even though it has only done 3700 mls to date .Just spent 3 hrs today doing the wheels and inner arches looks better than new .Going to a car show this Sunday at the SECC and on the top 50 stand so its looking good . Some on here will say just drive it never mind the polishing ,but for me that is part of the enjoyment i get out of owning it .The only other car that got so much attention was my Speedster, so John has got the best of both worlds .[;)] Brian

I would have taken more than brave pills had I have known what was going to happen when I went we drove in the ring. It was eyes shut and almost brown trousers! I think the camera may be lying Brian Re shine. I don't go for any of the fancy price stuff! When I go to the US I pop into K Mart and see what's on offer! Last time I went it was 'Mothers' and was BOGOF. So a couple of those came home. Easy to apply and very easy to come off when dry. Great product at half the price it would cost here in the UK. I dont think its that expensive in the UK - approx £12.00 a bottle. I agree with Brian re ownership - I'm not a Tech Type guy and I don't think you will see me on track! However, ownership of any classic car you love covers many aspect and some aspect are more important than other to all of us. I don't drive on a daily basis so when we are going to an event 'The Silverstone Classic is the next one' Even opening the garage door becomes an event! Just stand back and look at your steed! Put on some music - Beatles 'Good day Sunshine', Bill Withers 'Lovely Day' and then when you are ready to leave. Steppenwolf and 'Get your motor running' Climb in, fire up, back out the garage. And hit the road! Not forgetting to shut the garage door[;)] Must go! I have a New Black Boxster outside on loan and going to collect my car from service.

John & Brian ... If you RED Spydermen want to get a very wet looking shine with almost zero elbow grease I can highly recommend an American product which is cost effective and a doddle to apply and remove Goes on like melted butter despite being a solid polish and comes off with total ease http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/45144/harly-wax I bought mine from Johnny Woods - Johnnyrwoods@aol.com nice guy and fast service and after 30 years with Autoglym I can highly recommend the Harly My nephew has a tiny pot of the Autoglym equivalent that cost 3 times the price of the Harly and was slightly harder to apply too End result and logevity were identical as we had a play with one of the company cars bonnet doing one half in the expensive stuff and the other half in the Harly Hard to appreciate on a white car but this is the end result

Your garage looks 100 times better than mine .... I made the big mistake of letting the wife into my man cave and slowly but surely more and more of her junk has been dumped in my cave[][]

for a white car no wax can give a good shine as white/wax does not do this as it swallows the light more than dark colours. I use werkstat for white, the car is easy to clean after and looks like silk. it was a revelation to find this product for white/silver cars for darker cars I use Zymol wax concours and what I use on the R. I have tried cheaper brands but Zymol just does it better for me and lasts longer, cheaper brands tend to need doing every few wash's. when you see how long a Zymol tub lasts it works out very cheap as you only do it 3 times a year. I tend to drive mine a lot and do track days though, so not concours in any way with a few chips here and there and battered wheels the spyder was the 1st car I have ever done the arches on, but on the whole I find it pointless if you drive them.

I agree with MrD - but white can still look amazing when waxed. This is mine from last week - after a 350 mile round trip to Silverstone. I have only ever used Zymol products on it with microfibre cloths but I have recently had to throw out a few cloths which were past their best. The Zymol is very good, I last waxed it at least 4 months ago and the beading is still pronounced when it is washed. I do intend to try the Harly Wax Rob recommends but the Zymol will last me for years yet at this rate. I have stupidly put a few swirls on it by wiping it off with a damp cloth when dusty / slightly dirty but fundementally it still looks good. Can't be bothered with the wheel arches though (other than a quick wipe when washing it) - it has done over 17000 miles, 4 track days and 4 trips to the Evo Triangle and is developing a patina!

my R looks battered now it's done 3k of fast miles. it's juts not possible to keep them looking like that if you get a wiggle on :-( Every trip it's 3000 flies and a few more stone chips esp on the rear flanks and intakes. I also have stone chips on all 8 wheels. the outside edge on both the cars are battered on the rear intakes and rear lower arches, my screen has about 5 stone chips in on both cars, and the lower front splitters are ruined. my mate who drive to work at 20mph in traffic goes mad if he gets a single mark on the car lol I have gone past caring as nothing I can do about it, the R's my work hack and will never look like that pic again sadly. you can of course fit 3k worth of film and then still get that big chip on the place you did not put it lol. my OPC repainted the front of the R to get it perfect, I have about 7 chips on it already, I would have rather had org paint and a few chips to be honest. but OPC blow in most cars now days for the show room look. (and even quite a lot of new cars due to damage) hence I will NOT spend time ever doing inner arches or door shuts etc, it already takes me 2 hours per car any way so times just goes. to do both cars in those pics took over 10 hours each, the GT3 even longer.

You can fit £3k worth of film and get a rock take a lump out of the film and that really does look a mess [] Talking of film how much did this guy spend!! now it just looks dull :-( the best thing about black is the mirror like finish you can get with a good wax , paint film has ruined the look on that car now. look at my GT3 leading edge on the wheel arch, how dull is that !!! I hate film on cars, and as you say a stone chip in film looks pants and you cannot touch it up.
