reply to flat6.i agree with everything you said there but what I am trying to point out is buyer beware that you might not infact be getting the newer car! traditionally up to about 2009 nearly all new porsches were factory ordered cars and no deals to be had and hence left the factory to a new owner, but since early 2009 Porsche uk have an ever increasing stock of unregistered new cars as dealers have to meet their quotas to get discounts from Porsche hence some great deals to be had on stock cars,i personally have had over 15% discount off mrrp on each of my last 2 new porsches and would never pay list for a new Porsche again.to give an example the 981 is now 2014 build year and has been since about june but just how many cars on the opc approved site(107 boxsters which has been with us over a year now and 55 caymans which has only been with us 6 months so I expect that figure to double in the next year!) and how many of those have had private owners and how many 2013 MY cars unregistered in stock is anyones quess hence its a great time to buy a new 981/991 stock if in the market for one because they aint selling and I would expect huge discounts which then leads on to buying a second hand one in a few years time and vins and MY. Back to the used porsches registered since 2009 as I have said before some have been sitting around stock and so unregistered to later in the cars life and hence could be older than the chap whos factory ordered car was built after the said stock car so you could be paying more for an older built car! that's my last input on this subject its getting boring like the right spyder spec argument but they have to be white and have black spyder wheels[:D]

Oh but then it's older an much cooler than our cars....... maybe they're not Spyder or R stripes after all..... maybe we're not as exclusive as we think...... maybe we shouldn't be throwing stones or looking down our noses at others???? [;)]

But the big question is:- Who will arrive at the Group Hug first? The PDK or the manual driver?[;)][:D][:D][:D]
If she is doing the huggin that would be me in a manual[;)]

Hello Thanks for making your point. I hadn't realised that what I said could've been interpreted as an intention to ridicule. Also, on here, when we say Spyder stripe, we mean the version where stripe goes from wheel to wheel. When we say 'R' stripe, we mean where the stripe is extended in front of the front wheel but not beyond the door. So we name them by their current usage. For example, we've had a chap on here considering putting the 'R' extension on his Spyder.

I referred to that car as a hybrid as a combination of Boxster 'S' car, 'Spyder' stripe and 'R' stripe. On modern Porsche the P O R S C H E stripe is synonymous with Spyder and R, but we do know its origins are from the early race cars. That's what makes it cool for them to bring it back, and doing so on a 987 rather than 911 was refreshing. From the Spyder brochure, which i've sifted far too many times[:)] "Unmistakable references to Porsche history are also inherent in the range of standard exterior paint finishes (Carrara White, Guards Red and Black), the 1960’s Porsche logo on the side of the car, the motorsport design of the side air intakes and the deliberately minimalist interior." A previous discussion on stripes from back in May.
ORIGINAL: flat6 I've been collecting some stripeless Spyder pics over the past few weeks since we saw this red car looking bare.

What is it about a side stripe that makes the car look so different without it. Does it help to frame the shape of the car or something? Here are some pictures. I've included some cars with stripes. Scroll through them quickly to the end and then look back at them later.

The cars with stripes are not Spyders. Those 2 Boxsters, being striped and in the launch colour, white, are pre-programmed to the brain to be assumed to be Spyders. OK, some of you will have spotted them straight away, but I can see why the owners of those cars chose to add the stripes. It does look good, but it's just a stripe isn't it?

I think the stripes look brilliant on a white boxster ,Spyder or otherwise ,less so on darker colours .

Eh? [8|] I do like the Steve McQueen poster though - my son has it on his bedroom wall!

Ha, I'm 6'3.....it's a bit of a squeeze but at least it's easy to park.....[:D]

It's a good point. I think daro911 found a number of OPC's showing 4, 5 and even 6 981 Boxsters for sale as ex-demo cars, each! Yeah right, which OPC needs 6 demonstrators. The over-supply of 981's will be a shock to anyone who bought a new one at list price []

I agree. I'd personally prefer white if going for decals in more adventurous colours, like:

I put the Cayman S decal on my Cayman in silver and really liked it against the red. With the front spoiler tips already in the 'Alu look', I thought it worked quite well. Had to wait weeks for the decal as it was on back order with Porsche. I guess the silver wasn't a popular choice but then it only works on certain colours, and not white.
