Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

I really like the way the forum has got personalised in this way & it's all down to individuals we enjoy meeting on occasions-hopefully the new digital platforms planned will enhance the experience & sustain the happy family that now is PCGB.

A great set of pics for what looks like a great day out. Even the hedge is quite a sight[:)] It's a pity to see Williams fall backwards. Now its a circle of poor results not attracting sponsorship funds which hinders development which means poor results and good drivers will not be available to bridge the gap, but where did it start to go wrong...

Robert - The sport button does as Tracy says, sharpen up the throttle response very noticeably. However, I have no idea why it increases the volume of the PSE, as well as also magnifying the bang, crackle and pops. I am sure someone on here with technical knowledge can explain why. All I know is that it negates the need for a sound system!

OK I have woken up now[:D] When I use the sport button on my Mini it introduces preset pops and bangs on the overrun but presumably your PSE also increases the volume too or is it because the "sport" button now turns the PSE on from the "Off" position and the pops and bangs gives the "impression of more volume" and drama[&o]

ORIGINAL: gouldian Flat 6 and Graham - Coming up to 7,000mls. in my 981 "S" and after 12 great years with my 986 "S" the difference in performance, handling and cabin comfort/ambience is considerable. Personally I find the new steering brilliant in all respects and within a short time got used to the electric parking brake as well. The sports exhaust particularly when combined with the Sport button is seriously awesome and I have to say any sound system in the car is a waste of money unless it's your daily driver and used mostly in urban areas. Equally, although mine is manual and the best gearbox I've ever experienced, if it's your daily driver and mainly used in urban traffic then I think Tracy is right to go for PDK. The only gripe I have is the windshield that pixilates the rear view and would have been better clear. 2300mls on summer run to the Italian Lakes including much second gear on mountain passes and tunnels!! returned 31mpg which given higher speeds and low gears for much of the journey was I thought pretty good. I was looking to buy a black Spyder originally and took a couple out for long test runs. I was absolutely taken with the looks, performance and handling. they are quite unique. I did find the roof noisey on motorways, although its fitting was not a problem. However, it coincided with the release of the 981, about which I had read many glowing reports. Having had one out for the afternoon I was sold, but it was a close run thing and that is why I keep tabs on the exploits of the Spydermen on here! Re grills, I picked many stones out of my radiator that fortunately had not punctured it, together with much debris in front tray upon returning from Italy and as I had the grills on my 986 that worked perfectly for many years I fitted new ones on the new car, (you don't need to buy the centre one as it is blocked in) and as it's Basalt Black the black grills finish the front off really well.
Interesting to hear from someone who tried both the Spyder and 981 whilst shopping, liked both and chose 981[:)]. I do get it that it's not a Spyder vs 981 thing i.e. it's not about which one out does the other, it's about which one you prefer for a number of key personal reasons. I agree the mesh wind deflector was a strange choice and for whatever advantage it gives over clear plastic, the affect on rear visibility is a downside. The 981 is the better daily driver and presumably better than 986 and 987 in that regard. Will a 981 with the Sport Chassis option be have a better ride than the Spyder. Better as in more supple or better as in more sharper. Will a 981 Spyder (or Boxster S with Sport Chassis) be preferred to 987 Spyder by the Spydermen in terms of how it drives...

Strangely there has never been a single test to date I can find on a 981 with the Sport chassis so my guess would be as the 981 is in a different ride/handling class to all previous Boxsters due to it's all new chassis etc I would assume the sport chassis would follow form and be that much more user friendly as a daily driver than the 987 Spyder Until Porsche issue some press cars the answer will remain a mystery[:D] How much appeal would a 981 GTS with sport chassis have to current Spydermen prepared to forgo that rear stunning rear engine cover and limited numbers made

not really into the 981, and I waited a year for the new Cayman as well, but was not sold on it :-( it looks too 911 and has not had a BHP increase over my R, infact it has less, weighs more and is slower lol for my own money it seems a better buy to get a 6 month old 991, you get to be a 911 snob, get +2 seats and get a real 350BHp. A GTS is going to be well over 60k and I don't see the value in that or the price to change being worth while. As for the fun side, I also have said the steering is not up to much for that man and machine thrill of driving, so I would have to buy a Elise Sports racer with the SC and charged cooled system. So to that point why change the Spyder to any thing ? I have done the change thing for no reason before and regretted it, nothing in todays market is like the Spyder, every thing new is dumbed down.

I did but my google failed me[&:] Fortunately I have you for back up so thanks prof .... Reading between the lines and obviously no personal experience it sounds like a more refined version of the Spyder set up which leads me back to my original question how many Spydermen would switch/fancy upgrading to a GTS with sport chassis but no perfectly formed humps [;)]

Thanks Brian. Yes, bought almost 2 weeks ago. Mr.D welcomed me on PH when I posted on there, thanks [:)] I was on the lookout for a 993T or 964T but there wasn't much doing. I've got a 991 GT3 on order but I wont take delivery until next year and as Ive been without a car (toy) since May, I thought I'd give the Spyder a go, now that I have I'm seriously wondering if I should go ahead with the GT3! It's quite a basic spec. Silver Buckets PSE basic radio/CD No A/C Al.

good to see you here Alan a "991 GT3 on order" how exciting :) going to be hard to sell the Spyder though when it arrives.

It's a good point mate. The face to face coupled with the online does enhance the way people engage. On the one extreme there are people who come across well even without meeting them and at the other extreme the keyboard warriors who may not be anything like their online persona but you don't feel like you want to find out[:)]. I've met all the founder members of this forum except Brian (kitchens) but he's in the good extreme [:)] See you again soon at a local club event no doubt[;)]

The Spyder looks terrific in Silver in my opinion.

Hi Al and welcome to our Spyder web and your new purchase sounds like it have everything you need and nothing you don't[;)] Will be interesting to hear your views as your time together develops and you have a good long period before the weather turns back to what these Spyders really thrive on Your 991 GT3 will never be able to compete when it comes to "topless fun" otherwise it might well and truly have the Spyder cornered [&:] What is the mileage and age of your new toy and which Silver is it Arctic or Platinum
