Ironically, I then see a magazine in the supermarket today testing the 2.7 Cayman against Elise S and 4C. I flicked to the conclusion which was along the lines of the Elise & 4C highlight what the Cayman lacks to communicate but the Elise more tiringly so. The Cayman at the other extreme with its composed chassis. The 4C being in the middle of the other two's extremes, was the reviewer's choice. Given the varied trio for comparison (and a 991 turbo S vs GTR plus some other bits of interest) I decided to buy my first magazine in ages. Hopefully I'll make time to read it and hopefully it's informative, which magazinesssometimes aren't.ORIGINAL: flat6 http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/driven/1312_2014_alfa_romeo_4c_vs_porsche_cayman/ Whilst we're on the subject of the 981, this review might be of interest to some. I don't think the cars being compared can really be compared but as a result of putting them together, the review brings out more about the key attributes of each car - maybe impossible for most people to like both cars equally. What is good about one would erode what is good about the other if they were merged. Nevertheless, I thought it positioned the 981 quite well (and the other car)

It will just be bias to what that writer likes, a bit like how I am bias to what I like. But people seem to hang on every word of a jurno, most of which never own any of the cars they seem to rave about in reviews. This then gives me zero respect for any car review when you see what they buy with their own money. They just need to write to sell magazines and it's a fun read nothing more. This month will be evo car of the year, some writers will give a car 5 points some 10 points, no one likes the same. It's fixed any way when you see the odd low score from some one on a car which other wise would have won. What you will notice is ALL of the Evo writers own older style cars which have more driver involvement. None ever own car of the year or even close to what wins every year. And the gt86 gets rave reviews in every mag, it's also cheap but none of the top 10 writers own one. Why ?ORIGINAL: flat6Ironically, I then see a magazine in the supermarket today testing the 2.7 Cayman against Elise S and 4C. I am using my Spyder today for the 1st time in ages, the suns out, it need a run out cannot wait I might even take a picture for the next page. just watched a few 4C you tube vids as all the reviews are out. it sounds like a Saxo with a 5" exhaust on it, quite a nasty sounding thing and just sounds like all the chav cars you see about :-( does a 4 pot sports car work ? I love the 98% of the looks, always loved the clover leaf wheels and the Alfa red. but I cannot work out what I hate the most from the big 3 no no 's (taking in to account I don't like the 4 pot engine) the gearbox the noise the front lights such a shame this is not a v6 manual with nice lights , better inside build and 350Bhp

Add this to the fact that there are plenty of cars that are much cheaper that are just as much fun to drive and you end up dissatisfied. That's what I love about the Spyder, it's (relatively) affordable, dynamically superb, looks great and is surprisingly practical. I've done two trips to France this year, something that wouldn't have been a practical proposition in something like an Alfa 4C or F type.ORIGINAL: daro911It will just be bias to what that writer likes, a bit like how I am bias to what I like. performance data results As some of you may know the P1 figures were released and some one posted how great it stops. well had a bit of trouble getting heat into my race maxx tyres but after a few round about laps of my local GP circuit the results are in as the dunlops are well slippy when cold. stopped from 60mph in 2.3 seconds pulling 1.3g in 30.76 meters. (100 feet) This is easy beatable, the road surface was not great and with a bit more heat(in the tyres and road) I think we could see a sub 30 meter distance. But on a chilly winters morning not bad to be pulling 1.3g and stopping in that distance. Will have to wait till spring to crack 100 feet though. did the same test in the Cayman R this afternoon, 34.3 meters 2.6 seconds and max G 1.2. So Spyder wins, I also think the Spyder could do that 10 times in a row with PCCB, where the R might manage 3 times before that distance grows and grows.
Indeed. That's exactly what I've said before on here and why I rarely buy them. Some give a reference point by comparison. Anyone who expects a magazine review winner to be the car they should choose for themselves would be missing the point. The review was interesting. The 3 cars aren't interchangeable IMO and the review tells you what experience each car gives and there weren't any losers in the way it was concluded. If you were considering a Cayman it would confirm why you'd want one. Likewise with the other 2. One thing that sprung to mind though was that they chose the 2.7 based on price. Porsche's junior cars are getting quite expensive to buy new, and get very pricey if you want the top engine alongside a few options. With the overflow of delivery mileage cars being sold as used, where will that leave the new car depreciation in 3 years...ORIGINAL: daro911 Generally journalists writing in all areas of life have to be taken with a pinch of salt. To help you get through the trick or treat brigade, thought I'd share some photos from Scotland last weekend. After a bit of a tedious slog up the M6, M74, M80, M9 and the start of the A9, we diverted along the A822 tourist route to Crieff and the A826 to Aberfeldy where the magnifence of the Spyder truly shone. The threat of rain kept the roof on but the scenery became very beautiful.
From there about 20 miles of the B846 was a really pleasant way to end the drive.
This brought us to our secluded hotel at Loch Rannoch. Greeted by a roaring log fire and then a room with a nice view made the 5 hour door to door drive worthwhile. Saturday morning and after a superb breakfast, Liz and the Spyder were ready for take off.
We had 20 miles of B road fun through beautiful hills heading for my first ever distillery visit. Unfortunately, the Spyder's enthusiasm for the open vista that was the A9 drew the attention of a lovely couple who wore matching jackets of the hi-vis variety who apparently had a laser powered hand held speed detector inside their unmarked navy blue Volvo estate [X(]
I know, I know, I have googled it now and of all the roads where you need to drive according to your speedo rather than the conditions (great visibility, no traffic, no junctions, no buildings, no animals, no rain, no surface water, in fact, no hazards of any description, no visible police cars and no camera vans) that was it. C'est la vie. The distillery tour was excellent though. Anyway, we headed over to Fort William along the A82 which turned out to be really quite a long way away and, to be honest, a bit of a disappointment with a pretty depressed High Street and a couple of aggressive alcoholic random shouting types. I didn't see a Shell garage and the Esso one didn't sell super unleaded either... Still, the A82 was a good drive in both directions. Spyder stopped to ponder the meaning of life and the injustices of hidden Scottish policemen before we got back to the hotel.
After another evening in front of the log fire, the Sleep of the Just (or maybe that was just the Dalwhinnie?) and another cracking breakfast, we headed over to Blair Castle which turned out to be another lengthy B road blast. The entrance was magnificent.
And some of the scenery on the walk was pretty special too.
Heavy rain was always going to be inevitable at some stage but at least the drive back to the hotel helped wash away some of the leaf mulch that we had picked up on the way there. Monday brought the return journey with all predictions that we would be heading back towards "The Storm" and we basically retraced our steps. Liz had a hospital appointment to go to so we had to keep our fingers crossed that the motorway wasn't going to be flooded! Grabbed one final shot of the Spyder and we only stopped once for fuel. As it happened, we had a clear run with just the odd heavy shower.
In all we did 722 miles at a moving average of 56mph with the computer recording 28.5mpg. The Spyder was truly great on the Scottish roads and despite some pretty hostile weather conditions at times, it kept us warm and dry. It was comfortable enough on the motorway too with no back ache induced by the bucket seats although the noise did get a bit tiresome at times. Very glad we went in it though.

That looks like a superb break Rob (Apart from the obvious). Those roads up there are just made for Porsche!! [] I feel the need to share this; I had one of these as a matchbox model when I was a kid (Albeit the "Ghia" version). I think this is an absolutely beautiful car from any angle... just a shame they didn't make the busy bits look nicer in those days http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1968-De-Tomaso-Mangusta-56000km-from-new-/251369029959 Wishing I had a spare £100k []

Glad you enjoyed the break some stunning roads around that area .I was spot on as to the hotel you stayed at .I could have told you to stay clear of Fort William the only reason you want to go there is to get to Skye and the west coast . Blair Castle was where we held our regional concourse this year the castle is superb and worth the visit a few miles further up the A9 and you could have visited the dearest outlet village in Scotland called the House of Bruar [] The beauty of Scotland is you only need to drive a few hours and you are into a different landscape the west coast is the most rugged and spectacular . No but if I went for a 981 I would go PTS Riviera, they do look good. Mind you, that would be an expensive call over a stock car! I would fancy a Spyder trip up there next year with some local knowledge to lead the way - Brian!! Most of the roads are superb it had to be said.
