Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Any opinions I have are based on my own historical experience of selling these cars and have nothing to with cars we currently hold in stock or cars that we will acquire in the future. The split of those with buckets and those without sits at about 50/50. To buy a specialist car of this type or indeed any car on the basis of an options list is making the assumption that all these cars are the same in respect of their condition, their service state and their pedigree. Quality varies dramatically and buying a car is a very tactile exercise. People need to see cars and critique them in the flesh rather than disregard them on a computer screen. It’s all too easy when looking at the classifieds to judge a car on the basis of those headline grabbing options, the mileage and the number of owners. Every car being sold is perfect before you see it and herein lies the problem. When you see them rarely are they perfect, in fact most are cars that true enthusiasts would reject from 20 feet away let alone under close scrutiny. There is and always has been a market for quality, for the discerning buyer who focuses less on the bells and whistles on offer and more on the condition, service state and provenance of the car. I’ve sold countless cars over the years that on paper don’t look great. I’ve given the owners no less for them because of it. Why ...? because in the real world, away from internet chat rooms they are absolutely exquisite examples of their type and I put my faith in the product. The Spyder is an amazing car, one of my favourites to leave the factory in the last five years. A paint by numbers approach to buying any car might result in you getting a particular model with a particular specification but it will never get you a work of art and deep down that’s what everyone wants when they set out to look for a new vehicle. Spydermen skinny latte or fatboy slims only decades will tell if there ever was a specific higher desirability & value spec Spyder and for now the word of a major used Spyder dealer must carry a little weight on how the market is currently I think all 200 odd Spyders in all there various forms aged 20 will have an appeal at very similar prices but to add my Spyder specific spoke to this old chestnut I would only personally be interested in a manual with short shift or a pdk with paddles, a car with buckets or a car with full leather and hot chairs, essential extras over and above this for me has to be PSE radio and as far as the sports chrono option goes only essential on a pdk for several well known reasons I rest my case [;)]

Impressions are as I knew they would be better road holding on the twisty bits.A much nicer car for the roads and the touring I do. Dont get so exhausted driving the R unlike in a 996 GT3, but the R is still a fun car. Used to dread traffic jams in GT3s still dont like them in any car. The R is more relaxing to drive rather than a wild mustang ie GT3 always got to be adjusting the wheel. Just feel more connected with the R but did feel that way in my Sport Cayman. Not got that raw aggressive power of a GT3 but with our roads of today its plenty enough in the R. One thing that did shock me a little the steering weight of the R feels really weighty compared to any other Porsche with PAS i have own. Early days but the right choice for me. GT3s are great cars but the early ones are hard work on the roads I am sure the newer ones are more user friendly. Cheers Cliff
 
6 to 1 So, launch spec may match the brochure but isn't cornering the market[&:] Launch spec is only a radio and AC away from a 'common' Spyder with buckets. I see more people wanting buckets than being adamant about finding a car without a radio. Is a Spyder with buckets, PCM ans climate considered full fat or semi skimmed. It's all getting so confusing[:D] I actually wouldn't mind if the next Cayman R or Clubsport was stripped of all comforts including carpets and trim (and a power increase of course[;)]). Try selling that idea on a roadster![8D]

Interesting comparison, i have just bought a spyder after enjoying a gen2 GT3 for just over a year, and agree with your points. The spyder is easier to live with in the real world, Gt3's are an incredible car but very difficult to enjoy on uk roads and keep your driving licence. The spyder is a joy to drive and thrills you at lower speeds without having to break the 100 mph barrier( the GT3 is really only coming into its own at above this speed) I am loving the spyder, it gives you a great sense of occasion when you use it( and it is very special) it has great steering feel and turn in,and a very compliant ride compared to the GT3. I feel it is a more complete road car and lots of fun!! I will be interested to hear other spyder owners comments that have experienced GT cars.

nice car for someone who is after a pdk with sports seats but does not say if it has pse.it might be a 2012 my as well because the only other one i have seen advertised was at that dealers with similar spec. i do like that cocoa interior on that black car works so well and my vote is on the riviera blue spyder
 
imho the only wrong thing to be fitted to a spyder are the wrong wheels.gearbox and seats are personal choice and dont ruin the asthetics of the car.the 964rs came in sports and touring the latter being 100kg heavier but both 20 years on are equally valued so a lightweight spyder should infact carry no more value short or long term than a full fat version thats my 2 pence worth on the subject.

That being the case, QED[;)] Time for a new subject[:)] Oh and, 7 to 1[;)] Always interesting to hear from GT3 owners describing life after GT3 with a Spyder or R. Congrats Cliff on the new steed[:)]
