Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

ORIGINAL: C2MTH Hi all, I haven't posted on here before as I currently own a 2004 911 (C2S). However, I saw a Spyder recently and just love the look - even Mrs H said she loved it - so am thinking about getting one. Definitely not an investment decision, but of course always great if you can own a car and its value doesn't decrease, or only very little. It will not be used during the week, so weekends and holidays etc. I have a couple of questions, could you experienced owners answer please... 1) At 80mph how noisy is the "roof", compared to the usual tyre noise you do get in a sports car ? Does it flap around at all ? 2) I think aside from fore and aft adjustment the carbon buckets are non adjustable , for lean angle etc. If correct, are they comfortable for a 3 hour run down to the coast for example ? 3) Once you are conversant with the process, how long does it take to get the roof on, say if it starts to rain and you need to pull over and get it on asap ? 4) Does anyone keep theirs outdoors, as I don't have a garage, but do use a car cover - is that OK ? does any damp get in ? 5) A divisive question I know, and subject to spec/mileage etc etc but hey ho....I see that secondhand prices were gradually coming down but then turned and started heading north again - can anyone advise approximately where were they selling at their lowest point - private and retail - and where the same car is today, just so I can understand how much they have gone up in the last year or so.. 6) Being a rag top, I assume prices will ease off in winter as they always do with Boxsters - any comments ? Many thanks -Matt
Hi Matt and welcome to the Spyders Web Most of the questions you have asked have been answered above. I don't keep my car outdoors, despite what you may read on some forums the roof does not leak when fitted correctly and as has been said the wind is a little nosier than a standard Boxster with the roof up. But who cares when you are driving one of Porsche's finest. It will take a while to get the roof up and down when you first have the car but after a few goes it becomes much easier. I guess 95% of the time my car is driven with the roof down, Its what the car is all about for me anyway. In the last year the Spyder values have risen approx 10% - More cars may come to the market at this time of year but it makes little or no difference to the price, they are rare, prices are currently not going down and if you want that comes to the market with your spec, be ready to move fast! Lurkers are sitting just watching for the right car to come to the market. I guess the main thing when looking for a car is to get one with the essential key elements. By this I mean the general consensus from people on the forum as must haves. We seem to have a division between those who like the car as light as possible and those who want a few creature comforts. Nothing wrong with either way although some get very defensive above their cars spec. Pick whats right for you, there is no right or wrong spec. If yo like Manual go manual, like your seats heated, well go sports seats. etc etc The essentials are:- - Genuine Spyder Wheels - Sports Exhaust P.S If you are unsure if you want one of these cars for gods sake don't take a drive. You will be smitten and its becomes a must have! [;)][:)]

1. Bad, annoying. 2. Perfect, best seats ever. So long as you fit them. 3. Less than a minute. Non issue. Except when you are in the work car park and all your colleagues are laughing at you. 4. I wouldn't. But it is waterproof when parked out. 5. My lowest trade bid in May was £28k. For a mint one owner car. Manual, sports exhaust, Spyder alloys, buckets, sports chrono, FPSH etc. Obviously that was unacceptable. Don't forget any OPC will add prep charge, warranty, a profit margin and VAT on the difference so the spread will never be less than £8k. 6. Not historically. Car is too rare.

Thanks all for the replies, really appreciate it. Does the PDK with paddles give the throttle blip on the downshift ?

YES it sure does and if you have the PSE & S/Chrono switched on in SPort mode throttle buried in the carpet whilst shifting gears you get the most amazing sound track from those rear pipes[:D] both options essential IMO especially on a PDK Spyder

I've got it home now and unpacked. Although I guess it is a bit overpriced, it's not bad - not many moving / opening parts, but quite a good little model. Sort of like a 1:18 version of the 1:45 model that some of us have got.
ORIGINAL: Steve Brown Delivered today! Haven't had the chance to unpack it yet [8|], so I'll report back later.
ORIGINAL: Steve Brown I've put an order onto their system now, so will let you know whether it's any good when they produce and ship them.
ORIGINAL: Steve Brown I guess I'll end up buying one of these models! Is anyone else?
ORIGINAL: philnotts99 Hello All.. Hope all is well. Flying visit.. But just to let anyone who is interested that the following model company will be bringing out a 1/18 scale model of the Boxster Spyder in White and the Speedster in Blue, towards the end of the year - http://www.gts-models.com/en/ Phil PS - Still loving the Spyder

A manual does with your right foot !!!
A manual 981 with Sports Chrono Plus switched "on" also blips the throttle for you on all down shifts

the only correct answers so far ;-)

Porsche will have their work cut out for them to take the 981 Spyder to the next level to justify the 10% premium its bound to carry over the GTS Porsche Boxster GTS range-topper is superb to drive, but is it worth premium over Boxster S? Verdict 5/5 It takes guts to tamper with an already-perfect recipe, but Porsche has done just that with the Boxster – and improved it. While the tweaks are minor, they make the Porsche Boxster GTS one of the most capable and engaging cars you can buy. You can go faster for less, but you won’t want to. Porsche is attempting to build on the already flawless package that is the Boxster S by subjecting the roadster to the racy GTS treatment. It’s now the most powerful Boxster you can buy and we’ve tested it on UK roads. Based on the Boxster S, Porsche has extracted a further 15bhp and 10Nm of torque from the 3.4-litre flat-six engine, with power now standing at a healthy 326bhp. It also sits lower to the ground by 20mm, while smoked lamp clusters and 20-inch arch-filling alloy wheels have also been added. If we’re honest the incremental power hike isn’t immediately obvious, but power delivery is flawlessly linear with maximum grunt at 6,700rpm. There’s a throaty snarl from the standard-fit sports exhaust – usually a £1,530 option – and the harder you push it through the rev range the deeper the bellow, with crackling pops and bangs when you lift off the throttle. But the added goodies don’t stop there. Porsche also chucks in the PASM adaptive dampers as standard – usually £971. Switch them to Sport or Sport Plus and the Boxster sharpens up around the edges, while the roadster’s appetite for corners is heightened. Porsche Boxster GTS rear You can crack 0-62mph in 5 seconds flat, which could be considered as rather leisurely for a powerful sports car these days. But the Boxster is about so much more than outright performance. It’s incredibly agile and precise on the road, which does mean it can be tricky to detect the active engine mounts at work, which are part of the Sport Chrono pack – a £1,085 option on any other Boxster. The mid-mounted engine already gives the car perfect balance, so it never feels unsettled, allowing you to make the most of all 326bhp. For a car which is so focused and direct, the ride is still fairly forgiving even with the standard 20-inch alloys. Porsche Boxster GTS seats Part of this car’s infectious character is in the standard six-speed manual gearbox. Changes are short, crisp and precise, with downshifts accompanied by a blip from the throttle – there isn’t a more satisfying manual gearbox available in any sports car. Yet, Porsche’s equally capable seven-speed PDK auto is available as a £2,351 option. Even with all of the additions, the Boxster GTS is just £5,844 more than the standard S, which is less than you’d pay if you were to spec up a Boxster S to GTS levels of kit. Better still, it’s still around £30,000 less than an entry-level 911 Cabriolet, which only gets a fraction more power. ORIGINAL: C2MTH Thanks all for the replies, really appreciate it. Does the PDK with paddles give the throttle blip on the downshift ?
Yes, it does. If you're thinking PDK in my view it is essential for the car also to have: paddles (the buttons are terrible and the steering wheel is much smarter) Sports Chrono to give the full range of flexibility of the PDK PCM It's a remarkable 'box if you're open minded about that sort of thing.
