Great spec Spyder and looked very nice in the flesh at Brands Hatch a few weeks ago. High maintenance needed to keep it spotless[]

been for sale about 10 times in the last 12 months , very odd, at one point it visited 5 dealers in a row, again odd but that would not show up on the V5, would be interesting to know have many real owners on the V5 now.

There is a train of thought that the 2.7 is too weak to haul the weight of the PDK lump to any benefit. Mate it to a 3.4S and watch it fly[;)] A test of a touring car driver vs a rally driver is, well, a test of a touring car driver vs a rally driver. If they swapped cars Plato would still win. Pointless test[;)]

When Plato tested the 987 PDK vs manual, he made a big deal of the standard PDK steering wheel without paddles and did a number of wrong shifts, so never really did a true test of the box. He driven sequential manual transmissions for a living and is pretty good at it, so why he couldn't get his head around a variation was a bit farfetched. I just watch these reviews to see the cars in motions. The content is more akin to entertainment these days.

Point is people want stick shift if they are into cars, if it's not about which is faster why buy an auto ? I know what Plato was on about win the steering wheel buttons , I did wrongs shifts at silverstone every time. PDK just not faster on a lap, but great for a drag race.

I disagree. "People want stick shift if they are into cars" has no substance at all. Who are people? The ones who like manual. People who like auto are therefore what:ROFLMAO:. "Into cars" surely there are many a definition for that and you are entitled to how you personally are into cars. I have to at this point say I still like the Alfa 4C even if it's not quicker around a track than a Cayman[:D] Yes the standard PDK steering wheel buttons are 'wrong' but he never concluded for anyone how the transmission performed because he didn't bother to practice the buttons or request the paddle shift wheel before the shoot (if the paddle shift wheel wasn't available on that early car then he should have practiced. Professional drivers can learn new controls very quickly when they change teams or racing category). So to me a waste of a shoot to conclude solely about the steering wheel. So all I learnt was the standard wheel is awkward, nothing about the transmission. This time he opted not to try the paddles and put the guest in the PDK and beat him at his day job with a manual. Yawn. Yes he is 'people' by your definition as both tests were contrived but the outcome just leaving loads of what if's. What if he had driven the 981 with paddles. What if he had practiced the buttons. I find I have to do my own test drives. Plato would have still beat him in the other car. Yawn[:D]. I agree it's not always about which is faster, which made it even more pointless to make a biased race out of the shoot which made the Marcus completely irrelevant. I can accept Plato prefers manual. Nothing wrong with that. Feel free to reply but I'll try to refrain[:)]

Jeez, it gets worse on here,,, "people want stick shift if they are into cars!". 991 GT3 and likely GT3RS = pdk Most likely all future Ferraris being semi auto and Lambos with the Huracan only available with their version of DSG. Will none of these new owners be into cars? I have never owned an auto, have driven loads, 3 speed Jags, Toyota corrola hire cars through to Tippy Porsche, M3 CSL and Ferrari 360 F1 on the more sporty side. Of all the autos & semi autos I have driven, the Spyder with PDK and sports exhaust has been the best as far as I am concerned. I am not professing to be an authority on such matters, all I would suggest is if you are considering a PDK, try one rather than listen to the perpetual rantings of insecure clowns on the internet! [:D] Try one, you might be surprised... I certainly was! [:D]

MX5 owners for a start, Mazda are 100% behind the manual for enjoyment. they are not chasing ring times so manual wins for the driver yet again not sure who is a "insecure clown " the whole of evo crew, 5th gear etc etc they all drive manuals are they the "insecure clowns " you talk about ? the clowns seem to be PDK owners who cannot drive fast but want to be able to with no skill. :p the 991 GT3 had to be PDK to get the times vs other cars, the new owners seem to be London types !!! As for super cars and automatic, most are on show and can be seen parked up outside some designer shop, status symbols... It's a shame the way it's all going ;-( and that's why older cars are in a crazy bubble, but can only be good for manual Spyders and R's , so not complaining that much, 2.5 years motoring for more than free.

ORIGINAL: flat6 How's the car? Your warranty must be up in a few months. Have you decided whether to renew?
Car is lovely thank you. Still enjoying it. Considering buying a 993 as an addition. Warranty is up in December, Service is due in 500 miles according to the readout on the dash, and I know it will need new tyres soon too so will be an expensive month :) Not decided on the warranty. Will probably renew it although I can see the argument for not bothering as it is hard to find a gen 2 car with a major issue. Need to dig through the good advice given by people on here to keep the costs in check. If I order the tyres and have them sitting here ready at least they can put them on should them come up on the list. Expecting them to say pads or discs as it seems that is a favourite but no idea if the car needs them. Thinking of dropping it off at East London Porsche Centre - anyone have dealings with them? Turbo fitting the expectation still?
I was torn about whether to extend the warranty and what eventually swayed it was to help with the re-sale. You're right that little major goes wrong with them but sometimes the small things can be fairly expensive once parts and labour add up. I only made 2 claims on the extended warranty, and whilst I probably wasn't much better worse of in overall cost of those repairs had I not taken the warranty, there wasn't much in it. Everyone's case is different but that's how mine worked out. The first claim was for a snapped gear linkage cable. It was fixed under warranty. They said they do go sometimes for no reason. The car was collected and taken to the Porsche centre. Then late that night I thought, why am I not making use of the free courtesy car (the Spyder being my only car at the time). So I arranged for a courtesy car, I think around midnight and some poor chaps had to come out at 1am to drop off a brand new 535d with 26 miles on the clock, which got me around until my car was back on the road (nice car but the way it was harvesting energy when coasting felt like it was robbing kinetic energy that I would rather have had to keep up speed at that point in time - the retardation effect felt a bit strange). A few days after getting the Spyder back the new gear linkage cable became partially detached as this time I could still get some gears. Very frustrated but the collection of the car etc took away some of the inconvenience. The second claim was for a broken button on the key. It was touch and go whether warranty covers keys, such is the abuse that keys can get, but it came through and that saved me ~£250 just before completing the sale of the car. So for me, I got back a fair chunk of 1 yr warranty extension back in claims + convenience. On the other hand, in 2 years, my current car will be too old to have a Porsche warranty extension, and I have no intention of selling it at that time, so my current mindset is to bare the costs of the smaller stuff myself and hope nothing major goes wrong! Yep the turbo is still living up to expectations. I wanted a car that always has a bit left in reserve, and for road use, this ticks that box for me. On the track might show up its GT car characteristics, but I don't plan to take it on track any time soon. I guess there's a nice feeling of having the Mezger engine back there, with it's motorsport heritage and lots of race wins attributed to that block and still taking Le Mans class wins even this year. Is it hand-built too? I must admit I don't know all the history but when I eventually get the I time will have a read about the blood-line. I haven't gotten too deep into the nostalgia side yet. Conversely to looking back, i'm not too bothered about what has superceded it either. I just like the car. I'm not excited by dynamic engine mounts or PTV etc. The only tech i'd have stuck out for if it had been available on my model would have been PDK. But it wasn't, so i'm happy with manual. What 993 variant will you go for?
Thank you for the warranty insight. It helps. Service is due now so suspect if anything come up during that visit that qualifies as a claim I will be sold. Glad the 997 Turbo is working out. Plenty of power in reserve!! Must be perfect for overtaking stuff? 993 I am still working out in my head. Possibly a cab, nervous of the Targa, probably a Tip as I think it will suit the way I'll be using it - around London and cruising. And Americans can drive them.

Yes overtaking and general being in a haste is effortless. But it doesn't urge you to drive fast all the time, which is good. It's equally happy being docile. It has just been for a free 'turbos and targas' clinic at the local OPC. They found nothing wrong. Hope it stays that way. I always take up those invitations to find anything whilst the warranty is current. A slow leak on a water pump was picked up on the Cayman and replaced under warranty. I would never have noticed and maybe not until after the warranty expired. They just spotted the water marks on the pump. What's the nervousness about a targa? I don't know much about them.

just booked the Spyder in at OPC Bolton for its 4 year service. they have a Cayman PDK there for me to try out whilst it is being done (or i am being done) they have a boxster GTS there also for me to try out. the sales man theree told me there will be a 918 there this week if i wanted to come for a look. the car is booked for its 4 year, plugs, airfilter, and brake fluid change. does any know the cost witheir fixed price service charge for these jobs. will also have the clutch micro switch changed under warrante

Can't trawl through this lot to see if it's been mentioned before, but Porsche Centre Bournemouth have a very nice one in stock. Just 40k...

Have not seen a gloss black one, mine is basalt black like your 997. As you know black needs to be kept clean but is very smart when clean. I also have the Turbo 2 wheels which look very smart on Spyders even a white one. Everyone has their own view on Spyder wheels but it is most likely these Turbo 2 wheels were original equipment on this car, as they are on the options list for Spyders, they are forged instead of cast and look superb if unmarked. I have to say the majority of people who look at my car notice and comment on the wheels first so I am happy with them. There is a great deal of chat about PDK versus manual and I think this is simply a personal choice, however if like me you are buying a Spyder for the long term, I think, a simpler stick manual box may have less to go wrong. With regard to the exhaust, Porsche class the standard Spyder exhaust as sporty in the Spyder brochure and certainly it sounds superb compared to my standard 986. If you look at the tail pipes you will also notice the standard exhaust runs the two tail pipes separately all the way back to the back boxes without any connection between them, which seems to me the way it should be. While the PSE is very popular with the majority here I suggest you look at and listen to both systems before forming a view.

Mostly the stories about roof failures and the cost. Seen one in a workshop being stripped down and it was a lot of labour. And then there is the extra squeeks and rattles...

Oh I see. I guess you have to weigh up how prone they are to failure for your amount of use and whether it's possible to identify a good one or if failures are random and without warning. Happy hunting[:)]

Just been reading this brilliant piece on Spyder v 981 S with X73 option an article I printed out back when it was online and have hard copy in my file[;)]No wonder why I was so impressed with my GTS w Sport Chassis session at the PEC last paragraph says it all which makes the arrival next year of Spyder Gen 2 even more exciting[:D] "As for the $1235 X73 suspension? To order a Boxster or Cayman without it is to miss out on one of the best Porsche driving experiences of the 21st century” Having a Spyder and a drive in a GTS with it I can agree 100% with those sentiments
