Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

A removable targa panel, possibly. A motorised solid roof that is possibly as heavy if not heavier than the standard Boxster roof is probably too far from the Spyder ethos to justify. But then maybe the next Spyder might not have a weight saving ethos, like the 997 Speedster... but I doubt it.
 
ORIGINAL: Rocket Man got my car booked in for its 4 year on monday at OPC bolton and at about 9000 now also a clutch micro switch. having problems starting when you push down the clutch, they are lending me a cayman S for the day and said i can drive their boxster GTS when i collect my car. will be nice to compare
Interested to hear your views on the GTS which is a fantastic piece of kit with the sport chassis option[;)] Don't know who did the photo shop but it does look very nice[8D]

Question: 981 Spyder & Cayman R aka GT4 when launched late next year if they are the all new hi tech flat 4 Turbo power train as rumoured would that be a plus or minus factor for current owners of the classic Porsche flat 6[&o]

The number of cylinders won't matter to me if the engine is a peach in terms of drivability. No doubt there'll be some disgruntled voices when they arrive but they'll probably be damn good and all will soon be forgotten. Like electric power steering, 20 inch low profile tyres, lack of a manual option on the new GT3 etc etc etc. With 40 years of turbocharging and being the first to put a variable vane geometry turbo on a petrol engine, to eliminate turbo lag, I reckon they'll do a good job :) Might all 981 and 991 engines up to about 400bhp go 4 cylinder turbo?
 
IMHO it's going to be a negative , but the positive is late na flat6 ie 997/987.2 will be in demand by the purists!so hang on to your spyder caymanR 997gts etc

But what if it is faster, less CO2's, more mpg and equally good in the sound track department basically the future and way forward [&o]
 
I don't think any Porsche engine has held any cachet since talk about "last of the air-cooled" and "Mezger". DFI has replaced Mezger in the GT3. Will the 987.2 DFI have any cachet or is it just an earlier stepping stone on the path of new tech... Don't know. Only time will tell. EDITED

New spy shots have revealed a prototype of the car, which is understood to be based on the current Cayman and not the facelifted model due in late 2015, undergoing tests on both the road and track. Visible in the pictures is more aggressively styled bodywork, compared to the standard car. Revisions include a new front bumper with larger air intakes, a new front splitter and a prominent rear spoiler – akin to that used on the 911 GT3. Also evident is an additional cooling duct just ahead of the bonnet and large ceramic brake discs. The car appears to sit lower than a standard Cayman too, further bolstering the car's high-performance and track-focused appearance, and rumours suggest that it may also be lighter. Rather than using the same 3.4-litre flat-six engine of the Cayman for power, it's thought that this sportier version may adopt the 3.8-litre flat six used by the 911 Carrera S, although tuned to produce less than the 400bhp of that car. Power output is mooted to be between 360-380bhp for the GT4. The Carrera S is capable of completing the 0-62mph sprint in 4.6sec, and has a top speed of 188mph. Despite being less powerful, expect the GT4 to show significant improvements on the Cayman S's 0-62mph time of 4.9sec. Porsche's PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission should also feature. Reports have suggested that Porsche has been planning to produce a hotter version of the Cayman for some time, with some suggesting that the model would carry the GT3 or R badge. However, it is now believed that Porsche will keep the GT3 badge exclusively for its halo 911 model. The previous high-performance version of the Cayman, the R, ended production in 2012 – and was one of our favourite sports coupés. Expect the Porsche Cayman GT4 to make its debut at some point in 2015.

Did Not stop the 964rs going up. If it's a 4 pot prices will rocket up. As for people forgetting electric steering etc, not me I hate it to appoint I own what I own and not a flashy GTS with x73, the R steering is awesome. The GTS less so and the GT4 will have to be some thing quite awesome for me to sell the R for it. R and Spyder are future classics end of another era. I have my hopes pinned on a 3.6 NA 380bhp gt4 with track pack option. Last of the NA cars the flagship like the GT3 RS 4.0 was.

we live in hope but that is the same/similar hype that surrounded the R before official release and oh boy what a let down!yes the R is a good car but not a great one in in so many areas but still better than a 981 porsche will use what they have so idoubt it will be 3.6 most likely a detuned 3.8 or a reworked 3.4! but the autocar article /pictures are just old news and i am not even sure its a porsche mule it looks more like to me a ruf mule with those wheels.

I think it was mytyres, I did not post the price some one else did. But camskill are always worth a try and PSS were £820 all in from them when I got mine.

Depends what you call a let down, the R's the best car I have owned and I have had a lot of cars. it won drivers car of the year 2011 and in 2011 loads of reviews just said it's the best handling car Porsche has ever made. it's fast enough in the real world, it works on the road unlike a GT3, So not sure where is let down is, the car is awesome. Yes it could do with bigger brakes and yes it needs GT3 front arms (but not for the road), but you can do that after market and end up with the best drivers car available today imo for all round use. The R is a better more sorted car than the Spyder, for sure as a machine to drive. The Sus is better the chassis is stiffer, the ARB have been adjusted, the ecu remap is bespoke, the exhaust is tuned and larger. it came out a year after the Spyder and they worked on all the little bits to make it the perfect road car.

I posted up that you can get a set for the Spyder at £720 supply only it was from My Tyres Best do a Google .
 
Sorry the Cayman R is not a good car its a great car. Having owned over a dozen Porsche models including 2 996 GT3s the Cayman R is the best road car i have ever driven and owned its simply amazing in all areas. If i was really critical the brakes might need a small tweak but nothing to extreme. I cant see me selling it. Taken a good few years and lots of money to find a Porsche like it. Its a great car end of.[;)] Cliff

Just fit a GT3 997 master cylinder and some quality brake fluid and brakes will be transformed to another level [;)]
