Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

If that is the case mrD would keep his R tune to 360 hp and put some kwv3 suspension on and have the quicker car and save £30k. A pdk987 Spyder is only 0.2 secs slower than a gt4 over the standing quarter mile! I would see what the new Spyder has to offer before making a decision !It could be more sort after 12 months down the line than a gt4! I mean if you want a track/ road porsche there is no substitute for a gt3! But I agree newer does not always mean better
It could be 6-12 months free motoring i guess! lol

Back at the Manual v PDK debate which is always going to be one's opinion (GT4 / Spyder) I had an alternative opinion expressed to me today at Silverstone. I was at a Lotus on track day and there was a guy with a McLaren who also owned a 991GT3. I expressed my opinion of PDK against manual and why I drove a GT3RS and wanted a GT4 his view was having owned a 997 GT3RS and now a 991GT3 don't knock it unless you've tried it. My opinion having owned a Turbo S with PDK was that as a weekend car it lacked involvement and I wanted a manual to give me the buzz I was looking for. An everyday car is a different proposition I drive a 330D M sport which is auto and it is great, but for fun at weekends I would sooner drive the wife's John Cooper Works. My friend at Silverstone thinks The 991GT3's box is in a different league to the normal PDK box and he would take it every time instead of the 997's manual box he feels the car is a step on, still hardcore, great for trackdays and more useable on the road. I guess I should try it before I knock it. My point is we have opinions which we all think are right and they maybe for us but cars move on despite us as individuals and technology will take us forward the cars will be faster, handle better (there will be minuses ) and that will be the future. Me at my age I want my track days to be enjoyable I don't care if I'm not the fastest I want to feel at the end of the day that it was money well spent ! I accept I should not be blinkered and the GT4 and the Spyder will be in short supply as manuals however I finish with the comment "How many 991 911's do you see as manuals ? its the future guys despite what we think. Geoff

Not so the 993 to 996 though!but from 997.1 to 997.2 yes!
996 marked the start of a 100% completely new era for Porsche and as a first attempt it was good enough to salvage the company and in turn the 911 and their 2nd effort in this reinvented format 997 was evolution working in classic Porsche fashion which leads us to where we are right now The 986 was a fantastic piece of kit if not the fastest for your £'s and evolved in classic Porsche fashion through to todays 981 which is still rated by all the press as the sports car to beat. So I have no doubt the next Spyder will move this cracking limited edition special along the right road in their usual manner and the GTS has set the bar very high indeed Even so, the Boxster GTS is about much more than big shouty numbers. It’s the best
real-world roadster out there, made just a little better. A Boxster with a bit more: what’s not to like? World domination assured. Sam Philip ***************************************************** http://www.driving.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche-boxster-gts-review-2014-on/ The 3.4-litre flat-six engine has slightly more power and torque; you get, as standard, PASM (Porsche’s active suspension system), 20in wheels and the Sport Chrono pack – useful if you want to take the car to a track day; and a host of styling tweaks inside and outside signal to those in the know that this is no ordinary Boxster. On paper the changes don’t sound much, but they result in a transformation, like a supermodel stepping out from the changing rooms and strutting her stuff on the catwalk. The changes from the Boxster S don’t sound much, but they result in a transformation, like a supermodel stepping out from the changing rooms and strutting her stuff on the catwalk There’s also a Cayman GTS, essentially the coupé version. But test-drive both and once you’ve experienced the Boxster GTS with the roof down and the wail of the engine behind you on a crisp, bright day, you’ll be hooked. This car is better to drive than plenty of six-figure supercars, let alone more obvious rivals such as the Audi TT roadster, Jaguar F-type and Mercedes SLK.

ORIGINAL: tyinsky Good to hear you love it. Not many things that fast on the road, and little that practical as fast. I'm sure that confidence to chuck it about will return in time - I used to have a plastic car with a mid engined twin turbo engine made in a shed in Leicester, which at first made me drive with extreme caution, towards the end of my time with it I was going sideways coming out of roundabouts. Isn't it always like this? After a while you just adjust. Spyder is getting plenty of use. Taking it to Scotland in April.

Yeah it is quite chuckable and practical. The PASM set-up seems better than on the Cayman that was the same age. Glad to see you use the Spyder plenty, like I did. I found it practical as a daily driver and used it any excuse I got. The roof doesn't leak, the ground clearance is quite good and more boot space than I have now. The car looks good. What do you use on it? It's nice to get to see my 'ex online'[:)] The Spyder was the best iteration of the 987 imho.

ORIGINAL: philnotts99 Hmm not sure.. I need to see more images of it really to see. Im not to keen on the 981 boxster or 981 Boxster GTS looks. I wouldnt swap my Spyder for a GTS. Is older better?! I am beginning to think that way.
Your a wise man Phil[;)]

ORIGINAL: MrDemon I respect your views and we could debate for ages about buckets, AC, nav and automatics, but we are polar opposites with our own views so seems pointless. You also like the roof on 99% of the time, most people here take the roof off every chance they get. AC and roof off, seems pointless to me. A lot of owners come from Lotus Elise and Caterhams even a Atom here so the cars a luxury from those. I see most people who had PDK are now gone(they like to read and post though) and the cars are long forgotten, just the odd PDK owner left here atm but they shout loud ;-) people can voice the pro's of PDK till the cows come home but it's like flogging a dead horse imo, always the bad thing about tech, it's outdated too fast. the last 6 or 7 owners to get out of their PDK cars did so at the right time imo. (again imho) only time will tell ie 3 or 4 years. To make the 981 sit apart from the 987.2 Spyder it should have gone all tech imo, like the 991 GT3 but to me it now will have the 4 worse things about it, 3 to me ! add in all the toys and it's not even going to be light either or with no adjustment not track friendly ! 1: Manual only 2: long ratio's 2: electric steering 3: manual noisy roof add in electric hand brake and even maybe a shitty co2 high tax band and atm I cannot see who would want it ? even the MPG looks pants on the GT4 real life will be sub 20 imo. now think 981 SPyder with PDK, quite at speed R8 electric roof, the 3.8 and that's a car I would want, looks and tech all working together. swap a 987.2 Spyder for one and £25k, not a chance. But time will tell on the electric roof, every one says it manual still and that for me personally that is it's downfall for me.
That's me. Lotus/Noble... and just prior to it a Porsche without aircon. Get stuck in traffic in London on a hot day and the roof and aircon are the nicest thing about the car. Anyway, lightweight it may be for marketing purposes, but a Lotus it isn't. Even the original Boxster with a proper roof was lighter. Much of it is down to the suspension set up and looks.

More boot space if you don't count the massive area behind the seats. Don't use anything special on it. Usually get someone else to clean it although I think I have done it two or at the most three times. Will do it again before the end of April and want to get it over to Nick at Detail My Car. Who's is this Spyder? http://www.detailmycar.co.uk/porschedetailer.html

Thing is I am not doing that to both my cars, it costs a bit and why mod both with 10k worth of parts ? I was always going to keep one the Spyder won the battle. I think the GT4 is a better track option than a GT3 now for fun as you cannot buy a new manual GT3 and the only GT3 I would have would be the 997.2 RS and they are £170k plus. As you know I was about to change the R anyway, the GT4 got in the way and yes I think it will be free motoring. Still see me in a R8 v10 plus down the line or even the evora 400 cup if the gt4 goes up 10k and the evora drop 10k in 12 months.

Hopefully the Spyder will free motoring too!! Off topic slightly, but what causes the orange dust found on the brake discs after washing and how can you avoid this. It’s a plain when you drive the car as it sprays all around the inner alloy!! []

Can't see a GT4 with 10k miles on the clock fetching even list price at 12 months of age [&o] If you want an R8 V10 today I know of a concours condition 7k miler but it has 2 pedals & paddles [:D]pm me if you want an intro

Mine are washed by hand and never hosed or pressure jet washed and when lightly soiled I don't even use water but a Rapid Detailing spray which makes them gleam[8D]

Yea i find when i go for a run, the orange dust will spray all around the inner alloy, which means cleaning them again!... Maybe the sercret is to try and miss the alloys with the hose/jet wash. I do find it easier to blast the dirt off though with the jet wash!

we will see, you said the same on a £50k Spyder we are just about there if not there now. As I say a lot of people move on to new tech making old tech void, like tiptronic, but true great cars will always fetch the money, GT4 is too sort after and as long as GT3 fetch £160/£200k the GT4 gets dragged up. You have to understand the drive and interaction of the manual, if you don't and it seems many here don't then I can see why you think like you do and those people move on. while some old school cars which are not even that great are 1/2 a million. why do you think the last 6 or 7 sales have been PDK, the 8 R for sale are PDK but people say they are not board lol , it's as clear as black and white to me. but hay oh. As I also said PDK has it's place in new car sales, but it's out of place in the cars we are talking about here.

I'd be tempted to say that the GT4 will be more sought after than the new Spyder. Reasoning is this: I was chatting to a guy who has a 997 GT3RS, and an order in for a 991 GT3RS and a 981 GT4. Given the increase in value of his GT3, he is less inclined to throw it around a track, and so wants the GT4 for those duties. Given the difficulty in people being able to buy a GT4, I'd say that there are a lot of similar types who are being allocated them as their fun car, whilst their GT3s are appreciating. If the 981 Spyder has the 3.8 engine, then it will still not be as good a track machine as the GT4 as it will lack the suspension bits. It won't therefore appeal as much to the GT3 crowd. If the engine ends up as the 3.4, then this will be even more true. The value of the GT4 will therefore be buoyed up by greater demand - ie usual interest levels plus GT3 crowd.

I am saying the Spyder might have a broader appeal especially for kind of people who want a weekend fun toy for road use and not just gt3 and track day warriors!if it comes with every thing of the gt4 bar brakes/suspension both these items can be upgraded to a similar spec.for those who want to use more for track days! It will also be light have more of a bespoke body and the advantage of topless motoring. But only time will tell but I agree if it is only a 3.4 Gts engine demand/ interest will be low!the 3.8 is key unless they tune the 3.4 to 360-370hp

The true Spyder lover IMO wouldn't look at a tin top GT4 no matter how much many people on here have decided it's superiority already [:D] I have driven a convertible ever since passing my driving test over 4 decades ago [] I have never driven my Spyder with suncap on and never intend too either. My daily driver Cooper S Convertible has it's roof down nearly every single dry day we get no matter what the season and this is why Spyder motoring to me is the best model at any price Porsche will ever make The GT4 will no doubt be an awesome piece of kit great value for money and a slow depreciator but thankfully there are folks who don't want to be track day heroes and get their pleasures from inferior overpriced under performing cars like the 981 Spyder is predicted to be even compared to the Gen 1 version [:D] Hope that's enough for me to get Clarksons job at the beeb

Judging by the numbers buying the new GT4 with a view to It either being their track day car to save their GT3 or their other car - whatever that is -it tends to put me off buying a used one as whilst it's great being used for what was intended I don't want one that's been tracked a lot thanks very much especially if asking above new price or close to it Just my thought
