Happy New Year to one and all. Here's hoping that 2017 will bring us all that we hope for.

Thank goodness I never SORN my cars! What a gorgeous bright and sunny January day yesterday. I just had to get the little beauty out from under her warm and cosy cover in the garage for a spritely run in order to keep the engine, transmission, oil seals and brakes etc in good order! However, I did keep the car's hat on as there was a bit of a chill in the air (well it is January!), but at least the roads were dry and unsalted........... and so it was back to the warmth for a wash and wax (that's the car by the way!) in readiness for the next bright and dry road day - lets hope its soon :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
That is one cracking looking Spyder[;)] - it couldn't have gone to a better owner and look forward to meeting you both again in 2017[8D]

 
Thank you Rob. I guess I'll have to enter her into the 2017 PCGB National Concours at Ragley Hall to hopefully continue the little beauty's 3 year winning form. The car will be taking my wife and I on the R23 "Parade Of Porsches" European tour in September (approx 1200 mile round trip), so we are really looking forward to that [:D] I hope your new Spyder meets with your expectations.

4th result in a concours would be really good so go for it

New Spyder has been exceeding expectations until I put the roof up - Just not so much fun with roof on:ROFLMAO: [8D] but it was such a struggle after being down for 7 months solid I have decided to hopefully stretch it enough to not have that problem again so up it shall remain until March

What a fab colour that is Rob and the roof up should help to keep the fabric roof in shape. I always keep mine up under the cover, but not fully stretched. Hopefully when we drive over Europe, the wet weather (if any) will stay in the countries that we are not going to [8D]

Dave that roof remained in the boot from day one and only went up for concours show judging

My 987 Spyder is currently in having the PSE retro-fitted at Porsche Mid-Sussex. I'm gulping over the discretionary cost but I would have paid the extra for one with it fitted so need to focus on it being part of the 'purchase' cost! Will report back whether I think its worth the dosh or not.

The latest and greatest conversion to come out of our shop was a yellow 2016 981 Boxster Spyder that now lives in So Cal and after 500 miles of driving, the current owner wanted more power and torque so the car was shipped across the country. The owner is a serious car nut with even a twin turbo McLaren so i was weary that anything would feel strong to him but this car made more power and torque than any conversion or race car we have built to date. The Spyder received all of the Stage II upgrades our shop GT4 has plus the Stage III 4.0L "stroker" kit to complement the already maximized horserpower that comes from Porsche's latest and greatest 991 GTS / X51 "Power Kit." Our Stage II GT4 makes around 410rwhp and 290lb/ft on a Dynojet when outfitted with all Stage I and II upgrades to the top end, intake, exhaust and clutch kit and the addition of a 4.0L conversion kit was chosen to add some more power but achieve substantial torque gains. The following upgrades were installed on the Spyder: STAGE I - Cargraphic Stainless Steel Longtube Manifolds for 981 GT4/Spyder - BMC High Flow Filters for 981 - Cobb Tuning Accessport for 981 STAGE II - 991 X51 "Power Kit" Cylinder Heads - 991 X51 "Power Kit" Intake Cam Shafts - 991 X51 "Power Kit" Intake Manifold - 12lb. Lightweight Aluminum Single Mass Flywheel & Sprung Hub Clutch Disc STAGE III - Custom 4.0L Carrillo Connecting Rods - Custom 4.0L Mahle Pistons - PCNA 4.0L Crank Shaft - Custom Mapping for 91 Octane & 7600 RPM Below are some photos along with a Dynojet chart of the file tuned for 91 octane. It's hot down here and the dyno work was done in August with the car running 91 octane in 97F temperatures & 75% humidity with 105F to 115F intake air temp. The car has so much more potential on a cool day running proper 93 or 94 octane. The small dip that you will see at 5250 RPM and any resulting torque and power dips were a result of the flaps opening too early and as usual, Cobb was on top of the solution with a fix ASAP. The file has since been revised but the owner was anxious to get the car back ASAP so i didn't have a chance to go back a 3rd time. The project took less than 30 days but i kept the car another 2 weeks to try and find more power and i found big gains in the middle RPM ranges with the cam shafts and was able to really maximize the file and perfect the drivability. With the revised file, the dyno plot would show another 5 - 10hp and 5 - 10 lb./ft on that fuel in those conditions but not much more. We don't have a lot of dynos in town, 1 actually and the ventilation is not great so choices are limited and I know that with better air and fuel the car would yield more. With the 20 degree cooler fall temps we have here it would have been great to be able to back to back the project in cooler weather. I plan to take our Stage II GT4 back to the dyno to sample the improvements from the air quality alone but this car's needing to run 91 octane really doesn't give you much opportunity to maximize the additional power so i dialed everything back well shy of the point of any knocking or knock correction. RPM levels were also reduced because the car makes ample power and torque all through the rev range and I wanted to be super careful with any complications from a missed shift at higher RPM levels. We ran these motors as high as 8250 when we raced them and the factory sets all 981/991s to 7800 RPM but when the 4.0L Mezger motors raced, RPM levels came down significantly because of the longer stroke. It's not a Mezger with titanium top end bits for higher revving and while i'm probably being overly cautious, there isn't another motor like this in the world right now and if it lets go from a missed shift over 8K RPM, the fingers are all pointing at me. It may be fine running at 8K RPM and the dyno sure shows that it will continue to make power at those levels. My plan is to do the Stage III 4.0L upgrade to our GT4 because i can't live without that torque. I also have a spare used transmission with Matt at Guard's shorter 3-4-5-6 gears and our last remaining 4.12 R&P from the Cayman race program. I personally like the 2nd gear in the GT4 for the hairpins we have here on our road courses so i want to leave that alone. I was lucky enough to drive the car home a few times to check for CELs, leaks, odd behavior; it was a blast and was by far and away the strongest conversion we have ever built.

We had a bunch of GT4s in the shop this summer and it was nice to be able to drive different variations of them and feel the power and torque differences.

Both conversion cars are ready and prepped for transport to SoCal; the silver car is a converter 987.2 base 2.9L car making 415hp with the OE shorter ratio transmission from Porsche.

Words cannot describe how hot and humid it was in the dyno room...the lack of ventilation required you to leave every 30 minutes and you would go outside to were it was 93F outside and it felt like air conditioning.

Porsche's 991 X51 Power Kit is rather awesome. It's the reason that the power band has the slope of a staircase and the torque curve is nice and flat.

This was the penultimate dyno run. By now most of you have seen the dyno run from my X51 Stage II GTS and it's nice and linear with a smooth torque curve but the difference in the two cars is almost 25 lb/ft at the tires. Given the 92 octane and the reduced RPM levels this dyno curve that has since been improved, still only makes about 10 more rwhp than my Stage II car but the torque differences in the 2 cars are extremely noticeable.

Deman Racing and BGB shared the 4.0L development. Deman have a 4.0L conversion kit for the GT4 which when I enquired was $18.5k but both BGB and Deman use an OBD port tune. The Powerkit parts used by BGB but not Deman cost around $12k in the US.
