Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Looking good Daro....

Just booked mine in to the local OPC for a pair of new rear boots.

They've lasted 9.5K.

Got about 50% left on the fronts, so it's another pair of P Zeros for now.

Might be tempted to change for some Michelins next time around.

OPC is charging about £50 more than my local tyre shop, but I do get to try a 718 PDK Boxster for the day, so all good.

Look forward to your views on the flat 4 & PDK

No mention of a 718 Spyder

Hi all. Well, the weather today has been glorious down here in the south and the Spyder just had to go out for some fresh air. Mine's just had the 6 year service, (cam belt, brake fluid etc, etc), so she's ready for the drive to the PCGB Club HQ for a 60 mile Cotswold Tour this coming weekend. Apparently there will be 125 cars on the tour, so that'll be an amazing site for those locals out for a quiet walk in the countryside. Hopefully the weather will be better than kind, as it'll be about a 350 mile round trip for us - lovely, can't wait !!!!!

After a record dry spell for April & May it sadly looks like a few unsettled days coming in now []

Better be prepared to use a brolly

We have run out of Sun Screen up here :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: not seen rain for 10 days now ...but all change at the weekend I'm afraid and got 2 shows to attend .

I can't remember such a long dry spell as we have just had in London in decades

In the meantime spotted this on planet-9

It will hang with GT4's and be close behind GT3's at PCA High Performance Driver Education events. The open air, top down experience made the 981 Spyder our choice over the enclosed GT coupes. Cruising at 165+, with the top down in Europe, is an experience we will remember forever. The Spyder is the "keeper" of our Porsche vehicles.

Just reduced my Boxster Spyder price for quick sale

Got a better deal than expected on replacement, which I don't want to miss

Hi Flat6

Just checked out the website, very cool.

The little fella looks like a star already !!!

All the best for this season.

Thanks mate :) Hoping to make the most of his last 2 cadet seasons and then I don't know where we go from there! Then the progress is more dictated by wallet size :-(

I wish I could!

So yesterday had my first chance to drive a 718 Boxster.

It was a poverty spec base car with PDK.

Firstly it's still a Boxster, so apart from the different engine the actual car is still a great place to sit and a fantastically well balanced piece of kit to throw at some twisties.

The big difference though is obviously the engine.

Ive read that it sounds like a 1960's beetle on start up... and it does, which actually made me smile.

As soon as you pull away though the noise does change to a bit more scooby doo soundtrack.

It does suffer from some turbo lag, I found I wanted it to be between 3 and 6k to really feel in control of the response.

The engine certainly does feel a lot more raw and rough as well, a very different experience from the smooth progressive 6 pot I'm used to. Even my wife's 10 year old Audi A3 petrol 2.0 T feels considerably smoother.

But I did find the whole experience good fun, just very different.

The biggest surprise was just how fast it was !!

I have a nice empty 1.5 mile straight piece of road close by and I use this to see what speeds a car can do.

I won't mention exact figures..... but the 2.0 718 (given that it was a rolling start) was very close to my 3.8 Spyders number before the brakes were required.

The other thing of note was the fuel economy.. you remember, the reason why we need small turbo engines !!

Well during my spirited 2 1/2 hour drive I managed just over 20mpg... pretty much identical to what I achieve in the Spyder driving in the same manner.

So still very much a Porsche, but one with a very different character.

For me, I would 100% still go 981 6 pot for all the reasons everyone has mentioned previously, but I can see why the journo's still say it remains the best of the current class.

Pretty much in line with my take as I did the exact same comparison and spec of car. The biggest shock was how rough the 718 is on cold startup. For me I cant live with the motor so i would be back in a 911 if the spyder was to be replaced. Amazing that Alfa made the sud sound fantastic which I think has a different firing order, if thats the magic fairy dust then lets hope porsche sprinkle some.

Nice feedback Shaun and there is no doubting the performance from the flat 4 in either format and this video pretty much concludes the same as you did
