Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Using the 981 Spyder as a daily has it's issues.

Replacement Tyres

I have been following a thread over on the 'Cayman' sub-forum re replacement tyres for a Cayman GTS and what may, or may not, be "approved" by Porsche.

Two links have been posted up ostensibly giving Porsche AG advice on what tyres are approved:

From post 7 of the Cayman thread: Tyre approvals list [link=https://www.porsche.com/international/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/vehicleinformation/tyreapproval/]here[/link]

And from Post 8: and [link=http://tyreselector.porsche.com/widget/gb]http://tyreselector.porsche.com/widget/gb[/link]

I believe the links are ostensibly Porsche AG sites. However, they offer conflicting results. For a 981 Spyder and I get the following results: a) The link in Post 7 offers only Pirelli P-Zero, either N0 or N1 b) The link in Post 8 offers either: Pirelli P-Zero N0 or Goodyear Eagle 1 Asymmetric N0 Interestingly, the latter links has a "Powered by Michelin" sign in the bottom rh corner, but it does not offer a Michelin option for my Spyder

No doubt excellent ( not cheap are they) over the Pirellis fitted to most 981 Spyders but it will be years before mine are needing replaced (bar unrepairable punctures ) and could even be 6 years old and still plenty of tread on them. My 987 has got at least another 6 thousand left on them and will be past there 6 year period come next year and have a spare set with plenty of tread but may well be past there 6 year life span. Any way both unlikely to see snow or 6 deg in the months to come .

I have thrown away 3 sets of new tyres, life to short to drive a £80k car with shit tyres.

even more so if you got the car list, it’s a no brainer to swap to some tyres that work.

Transformed my R and my Golf. And I run cups on the 987 Spyder.

This is a first a GT4 & Spyder priced identically by an OPC no less[;)]

I know which one my money would be on :ROFLMAO:

I think I read somewhere it's not a direct fit.......it said the gt4 and 981 front bumpers are not quite the same....which I found surprising. It would look good tho.

Can't remember if it was this forum or somewhere else.

Would it negatively affect the handling i.e. Porsche have spent a fortune developing/testing/setting up the car a certain way with the front rear spoiler dimensions complementing each other ......or is it so minimal one would never notice the difference in the real world?

This wasn't the original one I read but does suggest it can be done with some adjustments

Think I will just stick with the original although it does look more aggressive looking .

Just measured the ground clearance at the lowest point on the 981 and it is 145 whereas on the 987 it is 157 .Both cars have scrape marks underneath with low kerps/ bumps The 981 on delivery had a rash on the centre part underneath and the dealer supplies a replacement should I want to change it . Just a warning a fellow Spyder owner caught his on a low kerb and actually took a piece of the colour part of the car a splinter came off the bumper .
