Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Car Colours whats common whats rare [;)]

One of One 981 Spyder [8D]

A roofless single-seater sports car without door handles nor windscreen, the 981 Bergspyder was the modern interpretation of the 909, albeit, a bit bigger. Just like the hillclimb racers of the '60s, the 981 Bergspyder had a flat, transparent wind deflector that extended around the driver. A tarpaulin made of faux leather was then designed to extend to the carbon fiber compartment, which was reminiscent of the 1954 Porsche 356 Speedster

While the underpinnings were shared with the third-generation Boxster, the 981 Bergspyder's interior was inherited from the [link=https://www.motor1.com/porsche/918-spyder/]918 Spyder[/link], including the seats. The concept might have looked like a one-seater but its passenger door can be opened and housed a compartment for a helmet, a removable cover for the driver's seat, and additional luggage.

With weight-saving regimen employed, the 981 Bergspyder weighed only 1,099 kg (2,423 lbs). Powering the speedster concept was a 3.8-liter 289 kiloWatts (388 horsepower) boxer engine from the [link=https://www.motor1.com/porsche/cayman-gt4/]Cayman GT4[/link], enabling it to sprint from zero to 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in just over four seconds and a Nürburgring lap of 00:07:30.

It could have been all green for the 981 Bergspyder except for one thing: the question of registration eligibility in some countries that could affect potential sales. Because of that, Porsche didn't push through with the project and remained as a one-off concept.

The ready-to-drive Bergspyder was displayed in Weissach before the Porsche museum, but it will be publicly displayed for the first time at the 2019 Gaisberg hillclimb race.

Now its its back to 4L lump [&:] :ROFLMAO:

For instance, while the mid-engined GT Division coupe comes with a suspension setup that should once again be borrowed from the 911 GT3, the Boxster Spyder features a more relaxed setup, one that's more suitable for spending time on the road. Regardless of which one floats your boat, these 911-engined specials should make their debut within the next months. As such, it's no wonder that test cars are running around naked, allowing us to notice the production details. And the most recent sighting of the kind took place this week, with the hairstyling model having been spotted doing its thing on the Nurburgring. You'll get to enjoy the Zuffenhausen special in the piece of footage below, which once again comes to confirm the naturally aspirated powertrain of the toy. While the [link=https://www.autoevolution.com/news/porsche-718-cayman-gt4-clubsport-passing-cars-on-nurburgring-looks-savage-133083.html]Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport[/link] racecar is animated by an updated version of its predecessor's 3.8-liter flat-six (this is actually borrowed from the 991.1 Neunelfer Carrera S), the new 718 models are expected to feature the 4.0-liter boxer powering the 991.2 GT3, GT3 RS and Speedster. Of course, the unit will be downtuned, so you can expect its output to sit closer to 400 ponies. Then there's the soundtrack - with fresh arrivals having to pack OPF (Otto Particulate Filter) emission reduction technology, there's the fear this will make the atmospheric engine sound less aggressive, but it's still hard to tell at the moment. The rumor mill also talks about a PDK tranny being offered for the first time. And we might just get the quicker box as an option, since the further-apart nature of the new 992 Porsche 911 decreases the risk of cannibalization. Oh, and if you're looking for a N/A flat-six Porsche 718 Boxster or Cayman, but aren't prepared for the all-out treatment of the limited editions mentioned above, you might want to keep track of the [link=https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2020-porsche-718-cayman-boxster-spied-testing-flat-sixes-touring-pack-rumored-134334.html]rumor[/link] talking about the upcoming six-cylinder models slotted underneath the GT4/Spyder

Don't know if there is any truth in a post I saw ..Two new Porsches are to be released tomorrow .Spyder and GT4.

I was told they will showcase them at FOS in July so another Fake News story perhaps .

Definitely true. Porsche Newsroom post on Insta. 00.01 CET. Local OPC confirmed on Saturday they were expecting it. Launch brought forward from FOS.

Interesting also told the Taycan will run at FOS - but not be on display (put back in box) as not finished enough.

Well at last we will find out the exact engine that the new 718 Spyder has installed once and for all , and then all the speculation will stop ! Will they also release the pricing ? or is it another tease ?

No production caps this time around [&:]

[/link]718 Spyder [/ul] ► Now a GT4 without the roof ► Naturally-aspirated, six cylinder ► Makes 414bhp

It might not get the same attention as its Cayman counterpart, but the new 718 Spyder may now one be one of the exciting cars in Stuttgart’s GT line up. This time around, the convertible shares a technical base with its hardtop counterpart: it’s to the [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/porsche/718-cayman-gt4/]Cayman GT4[/link] what the 911 Speedster is the to the 911 GT3.

[h2]That is a good thing[/h2]Before the 718 Spyder wasn’t a Motorsport model, and it had 10bhp less than the GT4 and sat 10mm higher, but now it’s the same bar the lack of the roof. ‘Now it’s an open GT4’ says Andreas Preuninger, the boss of Porsche’s GT range.

718_spyder_051.jpg

The platform sharing means the Spyder gets the same 4.0-litre, six-cylinder powerplant as the GT4 – as well as the same six-speed box, too. You can read about just where engine comes from in our [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/porsche/718-cayman-gt4/]in-depth Cayman GT4 article[/link] – it’s not from the old car, nor the new 911 – but the key detail here is the lack of turbo.

That’s right, both the 718 Spyder and the Cayman GT4 are still naturally-aspirated, and they’ll have a GT3-esque have a 8000rpm redline. Power is up to 414bhp, torque is unchanged at 310lb ft, but power is delivered higher up in the rev range – so you‘ll be working a bit harder.

But the best bit? The Spyder matches the hardtop from 0 to 62mph in just 4.4 seconds. The convertible does surrender 1mph of ultimate speed to the Cayman GT4 with a v-max of 187mph – but the wind will be ruining your hair by then anyway, right? Lastly, the Spyder will do 25.7mpg on WLTP.

[h2]Handing? [/h2]This is a convertible with the DNA of a GT4, so expect it to handle just as well. The suspension is still borrowed from the GT3 – but the 991.2 now, PASM adaptive dampers are standard, and the ride-height is 30mm lower than a regular Boxster. Because it’s basically a GT4 with no roof, you’re also able to adjust the toe, camber and anti-roll bars.

718_spyder_055.jpg

Other stuff? The exhaust is switchable, and you get rev-matching – although you can take it off... Options include the PCCB ceramic brake system and carbon bucket seats, though Spyder owners are denied the GT4's Club Sport Package with rear cage, fire extinguisher and six-point harnesses for the driver.

[h2]Anything else? [/h2]‘We are not putting a wing on a convertible,’ insists Preuninger. ‘So we had to have a working diffuser, that decision was made at the very beginning, and the exhaust guys got the order to work around it. It caused a lot of headaches, but we needed to free that central space to accelerate the air. It really boosts the Spyder and makes it a very stable high-speed car.’ Further stability comes from the pop-up spoiler that rises at 74mph.

Elsewhere, the vents ahead of the front wheels create an ‘air curtain’ and direct air around the wheels and along the sides of the vehicle, helping draw air out of the wheelarches. The small gurney ahead of the vent near the bonnet also helps creates a low pressure zone, which again helps put the car back into balance with the diffuser and wing.

718_spyder_057.jpg

[h2]How much is it?[/h2]The new 2019 Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder costs £73,405, a handy couple of grand less than the GT4. That’s more than the bargains of £65k and £60k they were before, but not the rumoured £90k prospective owners were worried about.

So now we know! Looks good but how does it effect the 981 prices ? , now its going into a non limited production run . Will prices take a dive or just stay where they are ? Let the debate begin.

But have Porsche only said that to try and ease the flipping? I guess we will know by how many slots each OPC is allocated or if you can really just walk in and order one with no issue, even if you have never been to the OPC before!?

Who's temped to swap 981 for 718?!

I think "A Bad Brexit" & "Corbyn is on manouvres" are more likely to affect residuals :ROFLMAO:

Reading between the lies it appears that buckets are not going to be standard on either model this time around so these cars could run out way more than the 981 versions did [&:]

0-62 mph 0.01 sec quicker Weight up 105kg! and C0.2 up from 230 to 249! Price up on old list £13k production run unlimited going forward

What’s the origin of news that there is no production cap - the Car magazine report doesn’t mention it, unless I’ve missed it in my excitement!

According to my local OPC it will be limited production ☹️
Limited for MY 2019 as there are only a few months before summer shutdown

MY2020 the gloves will be off and the market will be flooded

"One thing we learned from the last GT4 is a lot of people couldn’t get one. Now we’re really proud enthusiasts can buy the car, rather than write letters. We’re not limited in a way, we will have a longer production run than before, and we wanted to keep it in the same price range.’" [link=https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/porsche/718-cayman-gt4/]https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-offic...[/link]
