And just when you think you've trimmed the spec to your budget, you realise that you've got to add £1,815 first year car tax...
6 cylinder sound but the GPF (presumably) has muffled the it somewhat, confirming that bassier sounds of the prototypes testing on the Nurburgring. It's strange that in Porsche's own Spyder video, my ears hear the distinctive sound of a 981.philnotts99 said:

My thoughts now the announcement dust has settled, as a 981 Spyder owner since February 2016 and Porsche owner for nearly 25 years. For me it is down to desirability, availability and value for money.
It remains to be seen from reviews of those who have driven the 718 version of course, however it seems to me that the alignment with the GT4 this time is driven more by cost efficiency than any real need to make the Spyder more effective on the track (something I don't need and I suspect is irrelevant to many owners of a soft top). I wonder what impact on the ride PASM, semi slick tyres and an adjustable set up will have - not sure how measurable an improvement there will be at normal road speeds. Performance would appear to be quite similar despite the extra horsepower - again unlikely that I would benefit much from this as gearing etc seems the same. So on the face of it not much to induce want/ need for me other than the chance to specify a new car.
Then we come to availability; I believe the majority of OPCs will continue to favour customers who will support their desire to sell cars multiple times over a short period, so at least in the short term its going to be tricky for anyone else to get an allocation. It remains to be seen whether Porsche will really make production unlimited - in any event I would assume there will be fairly small numbers allocated to the UK even if this is over multiple production years. Based on my own experience at the OPC I have mine serviced not only are they not interested in talking to an existing owner, they are patronising and arrogant in the process.
Specifying a car equivalent to mine (PCCB, LWBs) tips the scales at more or less exactly £90k - and that is before the initial RFL or PPF.
So it would be a considerable cost to change for a car that seems for my personal use not to be much of an improvement - and that assumes I could find an OPC who would be kind enough to supply me with one.
A bit of a no brainer - I'll be keeping mine for the foreseeable and I'll upgrade my day to day car instead.
It will be interesting to see how the GT4/Spyder and generic UK Porsche market develops over the next 18 to 24 months - it seems to me that Porsche UK and their dealer network are happy to feed the fire of those who see limited production cars as a profit making opportunity or who are seeking to own a trophy car that they don't really intend to use, at the expense of long term owners. My local dealer regularly has 60 to 70 used vehicles in stock, many of which do not change form month to month - that's not sustainable. And every other month there seems to be a new OPC opening.

Mint green! So has any Spyder men or women had the call from any OPCs? (If you wanted the call that is! )

I wouldn't change my 981 for a 718 Spyder as I think its character may well have changed a bit.
I Love my Spyder for Euro Touring, just completed my 3rd trip (this time 3100 miles in 14 days).
The way it eats the motorway miles, but then gives so much fun in mountains / Valleys etc. is just perfect for me.
Always brings a smile.
Anyone else looking to go GT Spyder ????

I've done loads on the tours.
Taken in Spa Classic, Mille Miglia, Nurburing, Porsche Factory Tour / Museum. All very cool times.
But the roads are the highlights.
This time I took my wife down to Venice, via Luzern and Lake Garda. Then she took a flight home and my friend joined me for the mountain drives.
First into the Dolomites for 3 days, including the passes running into Cortina, then Stelivo and Gavia.
Then into the Swiss Alps via the Simplon Pass for my favourite Grimsel, Susten and Furka triangle......
Totally epic roads and in early June not too crowded.
This is exactly what the 981 Spyder was made for.

I put in a letter of interest summer 2016 and was told yesterday my OPC was getting 2 Spyders this year and one was already promised. So 7 salesmen to put forward who should get the other!
