Cayman GT4: Where are we up 2 now? Déjà vu Edition

To clarify, I think it will be bored out to 4.0l with a mild tune to lift it above the power and torque of the mildly tuned 3.8 GT4s out there ...

I actually like the idea of a more torquey engine in the genre of my Motec'd 964RS that had 330bhp and 315 ft lbs torque ... and it was a 3.6.

re noise..

"Turns out he’s already responded to this question on his own post in the Porsche Club Sweden FB group and says it sounds naturally aspirated"

Just seen that article too. Must be one of the worst click baits so far. A few pics that are already circulating, absolutely no substance to back up what the engine will be and quotes from Preuninger that must be something like a year old now and were not said directly in reference to the next GT4. (I believe they were said at the time the 991.2 GT3 was being released). But I guess that's autocar for you.

Be funny if it's a Turbo.

It's bound to be, any car I sell seems to go up loads a year later.
I know how you feel and I don't like to be reminded of my folly. Sold a motor that I shall never ever be able to replace due to cost and it's condition. Her indoors is hiding all the sharp knives and all the ropes.

I know this thread is all conjecture, but Porsche have said the next generation 911 GT3 (ie 992) is going to be a turbo (+ hybrid?). Does anyone really believe that amother platform (ie 718) that they’ve converted to turbo will be anything other than turbo? It makes little sense. Maybe a de-tuned turbo 3.0 6 cyl....but n/a??......now they’ve announced the change to turbo for 992 GT3 a n/a 718 GT4 seems increasingly unlikely IMO. (I hope - LOL)

A turbo'd GT3 992 is only speculation as far as I'm aware - nothing official from Porsche has come out to state this, only some press comments. So I don't think it's a given.

The most persistent rumours for the last 12 months have stated that there will be a 4.0ltr naturally aspirated GT4 and Spyder along at some point, and based on the mules we've seen I would expect that to be sometime this year. Probably in the not too distant future with cars arriving around end 2018/early 2019.

More press speculation and rumours.....what a surprise..! It's what happens when the hacks have too much time on their hands.

Incidentally David, I agree with your comment on PH that if the next CGT4 is naturally aspirated it will just be labelled Cayman GT4, the 718 title being dropped.

Jeff

Definitely - I've said that since the 718 models were introduced. The GT4 and Spyder will be their own mid-engined thing.

Went into my OPC Saturday, they told me current GT3s being delivered would be last of N/A cars and all 718 derivatives would be turbo henceforth due to emissions. The poor quality sound of the car on this video seems to substantiate that.

Ralph and David excepted, the PH juveniles have gone into hyperdrive on this....yet again..!

What we need to do is apply some science to this now that we have a "soundbite". Unfortunately I don't have access to the appropriate signal processing software these days, but I've asked a friend who does if he can enlighten us. I'll report back if he's successful.

Jeff

That would be very interesting Jeff. I can't tell much from the sound personally, it's a lower/bassier note than my 981 GTS which would suggest a turbo but I couldn't say for sure. I hear a higher note in the 981 NASP cars, and a lower note from the 718 turbos.

Those supposedly "in the know" on PH and Rennlist still insist the GT4 will be a 4.0ltr NASP flat six, for what it's worth. If so, I would imagine this Spyder has the same engine that the GT4 will have. It certainly seems to have the same chassis - wheels/brakes look identical across the GT4 and Spyder mules that we've seen.

David,

Without looking carefully at the harmonic signature it's very difficult to come to a definitive conclusion. In simple terms, regardless of whether or not it's turbocharged, a 4-cylinder engine will be dominated by even engine orders (2,4,etc.) whereas a 6-cylinder will be be characterised by odd engine orders (3,6,etc.) - that's why, as you say, the 4-pot is perceived to have a lower engine note than the 6. Unfortunatley the friend I mentioned in my previous post has suffered the bereavement of a very close family member and therefore has much more important things to attend to at the moment, but I'll post any findings here when he's able to get back to me.

I'd agree that it would make perfect commercial sense that the Spyder and GT4 will share the same engine, and if the Spyder is to use the F-4 turbo engine then it would follow that the GT4 will also use this engine. However, the Spyder is not a GT car (i.e. not developed by A.P's group) so anything is possible, and although there's a lot of aimless chatter about using a "detuned" GT3 in the GT4 we've said on a number of occasions here that it's quite possible that a stroked (not bored as the PH posse seem to think) version of the old 3.8L engine could be used with little modification. Plus, although there are a lot of Spyders running around, we haven't yet seen a similar number of GT4s (conspicuous by its absence from the 'Ring perhaps?), so maybe there's still some way to go on GT4 development.

Jeff

Well the spider in the video clip I would say is 100% turbo and 0% N.A. as you Can just about make out a turbo if you listern very closely.

It also make sense that both cars will once again share the same engine platform and as the 4L engine now needs work to get it to meet the new engine regs and that' why Porsche had to rush all the gt3 and gt3rs out the doors, is it the end off the road for the 4L engine ? I don' know, but as Porsche chose the naming of the new Cayman and boxers to be 718 rather than 981.2 or 982 then can they put a 6 pot in one? As it goes all against what the 718 stands for and saying well the gt4 and spider are different (when they share the same body ect) and so it fine to put in a different engine might not be the best result for the 718 as it says well the 4 pot is not up to the job in my eyes and don't buy one.

Just my view on it but as norm we will have to wait for an official statement
