Cayman GT4: Where are we up 2 now? Déjà vu Edition

Listened to this with a colleague who has a 991.2 with 3.0t engine. Neither of us thought it sounded very high revving, or n/a. I’m fact sounded quite like his 3.0t......

See my posts and photos on the Are Spyders Becoming Extinct page.

New GT4, Boxster Spyder and Cayman T all have the same exhaust layout as the new 992.

Chris & Chris,

It seems as though the 718 GT4 has been ready for months now...! The only question is the release date which speculation has it that it’s most probably going be Geneva 2019, although some are predicting it could be as early as the LA Show this November.

Forget turbocharging and a high-revving GT3 engine. My money’s still on a stroked (4.0 litre) version of the 3.8 litre 981 engine.

Jeff

Thanks. Very interesting. Enjoying both threads. Now up to 27 GT4s in OPCs on Porsche approved site. What a shame if the new ones turn out to have a T!?!?

We've gone from this, a year ago...

Hmm....so I noticed Ralph. A bit disappointing really but according to PH we've been through various (ficticious!?) iterations in the past year - 4.0L F6, 3.8L F6 with X51, 3.0L F6 Turbo and 2.5L F4 Turbo (unless I've missed something out - I can't cope with the all the suggestions!).

Having said that, I'm sure a lot of development work has been done - let's hope it's worth it.

"This is public information - race teams don't get their (GT4 Gen 2 Clubsport) race cars until late December because of an embargo related to the fact that the road car is not released and therefore they don't want race cars floating around before the world sees the car on which it's based. That's why we had to surrender our phones at the introduction at Daytona."

It is just a repeat of what he told me in May

Just to note that someone on PH has said that there's an embargo on a new car that's delaying the November issue of Evo magazine. So maybe we will be seeing the 718 GT4 at the LA Show in November?

Jeff

Yes, I did realise that Ralph, which would better account for Evo's delay in publishing - a new 911 is far more important and newsworthy than the GT4.

I believe you mentioned previously the Essen Motor Show in December, so I suppose it's possible that both the road and race cars will be announced there. A bit low-key I would have thought but then deliveries would probably commence Q2 2019 - sensible timing for both the GT4 and Spyder.

Jeff

Jeff,

Essen Show ends December 9th so probably not late (enough) December to fit John's narrative. I'd guess they'd be prioritising USA race car deliveries over Europe because of the importance of the Roar in the USA (and no European races until late 1Qtr)

I take your point Ralph but if, as John says, the teams don't actual get their cars until late December then wouldn't an early December announcement of both road and race cars fit that scenario? The teams will need a fair amount of time to prep and shake-down the cars before the first races if the Gen2 cars are significantly different from the Gen1...aero maybe?

It's all a bit of a conundrum. Whatever...time's running out fast!
