Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

A GT4 is £64k and GT3 is £105k both with no options at a guess, so it cannot have the 4.0l engine and the GT3 3.8 has major issues.

A GT4 RS with the 3.8 GTS 420BHP unit and carbon bonnet for £80k might work, but then the race car does not have the GTS unit for some odd reason.

So I cannot see any of those working, which leaves a future GT4 with a 4 pot in 3 years time, and never a RS.

I agree with Mr D ... the 4 Pot GT4 RS will be the ideal introduction of a Turbo Charged RS car for around £100k ... the GTS 4 pot will be much quicker than our GT4 so logically speaking i think all future Cayman GT cars will be Turbo charged .... This now begs the question - do you P/X your GT4 against the new 2017 GT3 or keep it in the knowledge you've probably got the first and only N/A GT Mid engined Cayman ... :rolleyes:

 
A lot of people will just switch brands and are doing, the 570S is a cracking car and dropping a bit to £140k loaded up.

R8 V10 plus is stonking value for 600NA BHP at £110k now.

If I don't get a new GT3 4.0 L manual, I'll prob switch brands to one of the above.

 
If I had a GT4 I would be cashing out around now as Spring is approaching and prices are strong but for how much longer?

Apologies to owners but I think the GT4 is overvalued - yes it's technically a GT product but it was built on the regular Cayman production line and only has a regular 991.1 Carrera S engine. It does have some GT3 brakes and suspension parts of course, but I see it as a "GTS-plus" rather than a true Porsche GT product. It's just not special enough to command £20k over its orignal list price.

If you bought one new and are planning on keeping it I'd be looking at getting the X51 911 GTS PowerKit put on the engine (if it's possible for a non-stupid amount). Otherwise I'd be taking my £20k profit and buying something else.

 
I think for Org owners with nice spec cars at £75k, there is no point selling as it's great value free motoring.

NO one is taking £20k out of them, as SOR is 5% and OPC want £10k, so on a nice £75k RRP car OPC sell it at £89k and take £10k you are left with £4k

may as well keep it.

best I could do is sell private at £85k and make £10k, but buy what for £85k ? nothing better than a GT4 that's for sure.

If it's the last manual GT4 NA engine car, I could run it for another 12 months and still get 75k back and break even.

I would trade up to a GT3 manual 4l but the planets have to all line up 100% for that to happen :)

X51 power kit is way to expensive an option on the GT4.

I thought X51 might be cost prohibitive, which is a real shame.

If OPC want 5% via SoR, that's £5k not £10k surely? £9k profit to an owner is good but as you say MrDemon but not good enough to warrant selling the car. I thought there was more profit in it at the moment.

I thought it was the same with GT3s - all built on the normal Carrera production line, with the exception of the 996.1 GT3s which were built at Weissach.

 
You're probably right, I'll admit to not being an expert on the subject.

The bit about the sprinkling of a few upgraded parts (with limited track adjustability) and the basic engine are my main issues....

 
This is why no GT4 rs

the two new cars from Porsche are, and I have been saying this for 6 months ;-)

a GT3 with PDK only 4.0l NA I know every one says manual option but afraid not.

and a de tuned 3.8 NA 991.2 non GT3 manual only ltd Ed car with the R 6 speed box, and hence why no GT4 RS because of this car.

I would say that car pretty much kills off an NA 982 GT4 too. The only NA engines in production will be motorsport units - this limited and numbered one with a detuned 3.8 and the two states of tune of a 4.0 in the GT3 and any future GT3-RS.

To keep any future GT4 in the correct sub-911 price bracket it will have to be a 4-pot, like I've been saying for months ;-) I still think the GT4 was initially only signed off as a swansong for NA engines in the Cayman, but given its popularity it may well continue but as per the other 718 models with a turbo'd four.

Surely the logic would go that if Porsche can produce a detuned 3.8L n/a 991.2 non-GT3 manual only car, strictly speaking there would be nothing to stop them fitting the engine in the 982 (other than the usual caveats) since it would be a current production engine.

I don't quite get what a "detuned 3.8L n/a 991.2 non GT3 manual only car" means. Does it mean it would have a detuned GT3 engine?

Correct, but it's a motorsport engine with the cost/status/prestige that goes with it. I can't seem them putting it in a circa £70k Cayman if its only previous outing was in a limited edition car which will likely be £100k+.

 
Some rambling thoughts about GT4 development,

a version of the 3.8L 991 GT3 engine is used in Cup cars,

a version of the 4.0L GT3RS engine is used the GT3 R and RSR race cars, and

a standard 3.8L GT4 engine is used in GT4 Rennwagen race cars.

therefore GT3 engines are modified for use in race cars, but the GT4 has the only genuine motorsport engine..[:D]

The GT3 engine is based on the unit fitted in the GT4, but has very different internals including crankshaft, camshafts, valve train, titanium connecting rods, and forged pistons. The cost of this engine is significantly higher than the GT4's.

The RSR engine also does without the variable valve timing present in the other versions.

I guess a GT3 variant engine could fit in a Cayman but suspect cost and oil system in particular would be difficult, never mind cooling and maybe a suitable gearbox. IMHO, a 982 GT4 is more likely to have a higher performance 981 GT4 engine with circa 415PS (lowest development cost) or possibly 4 pot turbo (to meet Rennwagen torque needs).

Depends if this new car is limited or not , remember the sports classic was just a GTS but about £125k.

Will this new manual be the new sports classic classic and yet another limited car.

will people want it, or will most want the new 4.0l GT3 ?

Not sure at a detuned manual dewinged GT3 is worth the change from a GT4 If it cost more to change over.

Either way both cars are a cheaper 911R or cheaper 991RS both with less power and more weight.

all the people who sold GT4's to get a manual option 4.0l GT3 are pot out of luck.

But 99.9% of the world still think a manual GT3 is an option ........fake news and internet rumours again for you :-(

 
Well we should find out next week - unless Porsche really want to eek out the suspense and announce it on the opening day - Monday 6 March.

I'm actually there on Tuesday 7 March - and hopefully AP will be there with his usual 'clarity'.

I think you need to think twice regarding your synopsis & Info ... The GT4 is one of the finest modern Porsches - if you value balance, grip and turn in ... There has never been a bad revue of the GT4 and it was pretty much garnished as the best Sports car of 2016. To have a Mid engined GT Porsche for under £90k is a bargain. But i guess i get to drive one and am therefore biased ... You would need to pay around £120k to get a car even close to the GT4's feel and execution!
