Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

Mmm centre locks - they can keep those! I get sick of the magazines coming out with all the "will have" nonsense based on a few photos of what is obviously a prototype.
 
Looking at these pics, the rear spoiler appears to be attached to the rear hatch: http://www.motorward.com/2014/11/porsche-cayman-gt4-spied-up-close/ Now, that can't be right for a production item. Jeff

With the tyres and the camber adjustment in stock form and pads yes def. every Spyder should be running the max camber you can get stock, with better tyres and pads. with my extra mods, It depends what one calls responsibly ! I live close to a dual carriageway with 3 x big roundabouts on it and it's my route home every day of my life. every one speeds on it, so yes I play on it with other cars, so the toe links help stop the car in a straight line, not been out braked yet :) The -2 camber gets me round the roundabouts faster, the extra mid range punch my car has gets me off the roundabout quicker, and the car just feels more direct and fun. I do this in a responsible manner. it's like driving a big Lotus Elise :) my main reason for doing the extra bits were the track day issue I have though, I just find a under steering car frustrating, so for me to be able to now (I hope) do a track day and be more happy about driving my car is a good thing. My Spa trip while fun and a great time was still frustrating on track, and that trip was quite a bit of cash, as I have said before a track day in REAL money costs you £600 to £1k so I need a car to work well on one. My R I use every day and just run RS29 pads, max camber which on that was -1.2 and the pilot Super sport tyres, it's awesome. but then the R drives better than the Spyder stock vs stock and does also sound a bit better, has a better map and better adjustable rear. My last mod which I have sitting here is to fit a R rear ARB to my Spyder and to buy a new set of CUP 2's. car will end up being better than a GT4 prob from a driver point of view and of course roof off.
 
Hmmm I remain to be convinced that the spoiler in that form will be present on the production car.

Yes Chris, I think it more probable that we'll see something like a fixed version of the existing spoiler so that the aero loads are transfered into the rear structure directly rather than via the rear hatch lock and a couple of rubber pads. Jeff

Am very surprised you get away with that. I'm using these on the race car this season and around the paddock they squeal like crazy.
 
never had an issue, my friend had them fitted for Spa trip and his were horrid. always best to fit them yourself and ceretec the right parts, last 3 cars all has RS29 with no noise.

Sadly that's not unique - the old Exige spoiler is fixed to the engine cover - which flexes like crazy! The photos are obviously a prototype so no one should be reading anything into what they see - and the motoring press should know better!

Not to decry Lotus engineering in any way Chris but I'd hope that Porsche would somehow be able to come up with a more elegant solution to the problem. Rather tricky on the Cayman though, with the rear hatch extending right down to the spoiler. And looking at the pics again, it does appear as though a small fixed duck spoiler working in unison with the elevated spoiler replaces the standard affair. Although clearly a prototype, if teaser pics are due in February I would have thought that production parts would have to have been signed off and under test by now to allow some fine tuning if necessary. Guys, My GT3 spoiler is fitted to the rear lid..... so I can't see it as an issue for Porsche. Without that fitting, it would make the rear boot a little bit unusable.... Just can't decide on manual or PDK, but I will have to see it they offer a choice first... Regards Waiting for more hard facts... ( Portsmouth)
 
Yes, that's very true Charlie. For some reason I'd forgotten that all 911 spoilers have been attached to the engine cover, so a long precedent there. The Cayman's rear hatch is much bigger and forms part of the cabin, so hopefully there won't be refinement problems caused by feeding aero forces into it. Jeff
 
Cayman R rear wing is on the rear lid isn't it? I do see your point though about transferring downforce via a moving body part that sits on rubber seals. I guess the downforce is transferred through the catch which is pretty solid so the lid doesn't compress on its rubbers any further. Apparently so 6. Oddly enough, I was always under the impression that it was just a bigger fixed version of the automatic one on the C and CS. The rear hatch is a pretty stiff structure and I've not heard about any problems on the CR, so we'll just have to wait and see how Porsche have tackled the bigger wing installation on the GT4, it being a much more substantial structure than that on the CR. Jeff.
 
Maybe they didnt put it where the motorised wing used to be because the latter goes through the PU to sit on a more solid structure. A fixed wing would need a different mould PU to neatly shroud the mounting points of the fixed wing beneath it. Cheaper to cap it off and put the fixed wing on the tailgate perhaps?

why would you sell the GT3 for a GT4 ? A good time to get out of a GT3 while prices are high ? Go on Pistonheads and the GT3 is king for every thing :) serious question btw.
 
How much rear down force are you expecting on the Gt4? It will need an impressive front spoiler and splitters etc at the front to stop the thing doing a wheelie if there is actually going to be serious down force rather than just nuetral lift. Look at 993 CS, GT2 and later Gt3 variants, the rear engine lid has the (large) spoiler attached to it and doesn't appear to cave in under the downforce! I am still expecting this car to be far more road orientated than many speculating on here.
 
Hi, Having just driven my GT3 to work this morning, I am questioning my decision regarding swopping it for a GT4, but I have only put down a refundable holding deposit....... If the car turns out like everyone hopes, then it will be a serious consideration... having had 3 Boxsters, I enjoyed the mid engine dynamics and I want something "special" to replace the GT3...
