Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

ORIGINAL: ralphmusic Jeff, Trouble is they might have to go to an additional shift but without sufficient load but when Cayene production is transferred from Leipzig next year (to allow Macan production to be increased) they might be able to economically increase Cayman production but for GT4 it would be too late. Cayene is more of a final assembly job as near finished bodies are shipped to Leipzig from Bratislava so not a huge factory load.
Ralph, I assume that the Osnabruck plant also assembles other VAG vehicles [Golf Cabrios?] and presumably either they have, or may have, spare capacity if they plan to build the Cayenne there as well. Or is that just overflow production from Leipzig? If they want to increase Cayman production, I suppose that a lot could depend upon whether or not they have the flexibility to run Caymans and Cayennes down the same line assuming that there is the line capacity. Jeff PS: I assume that Osnabruck is just an assembly plant with the painted bodies arriving from Stuttgart along with some or all of the other components?

Volkswagen has announced that the Porsche Cayenne will also be assembled at its Osnabrück plant from summer 2015 due to high demand for the luxury SUV. About 20,000 facelifted Cayenne SUVs will be built in Osnabrück each year, following a €25 million ($33.8 million) investment. Currently, the body shells of the Porsche Cayenne are built at VW’s plant in Slovakia, painted and then shipped for final assembly at the Porsche plant in Leipzig. The decision to shift a part of final assembly to Osnabrück has been made because the Leipzig facility is at maximum capacity due to strong demand for Cayenne, Macan and Panamera models. “The optimization of the existing factory capacity and the agreed assembly of the Porsche Cayenne in Osnabrück underlines the high degree of flexibility within the VW Group production network and it demonstrates the good cooperation between Volkswagen and Porsche. The team in Osnabrück deserves this great product,” said Thomas Ulbrich, Board of Management member for Production and Logistics at Volkswagen Passenger Cars. Obviously, this decision is good news for Volkswagen Osnabrück employees as well, since production of the Boxster and Cayman will be gradually shifted back to Zuffenhausen by the end of 2016. “The employees in Osnabrück have proven with their many years of experience in sports car production that they deliver the highest quality Porsche. We appreciate the opportunity to trust them with a part of the final assembly of the Cayenne. This is an important contribution to achieving the strategy objectives Porsche in 2018,” said Dr. Oliver Blume, head of production and logistics at Porsche AG. http://www.carscoops.com/2014/07/vw-to-build-facelifted-porsche-cayenne.html

Ta for that Rob. Interesting to note that Cayman production will be transferred to Zuffenhausen, to be built alongside the Boxster and all the other sportscars. That sounds more efficient than shipping bodies and completed cars around the country. Jeff

Well Osnabruck management will likely be surprised to hear of Cayman going to Stuttgart. Cayenne is very little factory load as Leipzig currently just do final interior fit. Osnabruck one shift 100 Porsche (Cayman) cars per day Stuttgart two shifts 200 911 and Boxsters per day Leipzig two shifts 600 Macan, Panamera and Cayenne per day. Stuttgart has 992/982 production to take on soon so there will be disruption because of this. (We saw parts marked 992/982) I won't offer a journalist's guess of the future, the above is what we have been told on this trip.

Not much happening over here at the moment but there have been a few deliveries elsewhere: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=231&t=1492081&mid=0&i=120&nmt=GT4+colours+&mid=0 I also note that MrD is wavering about his colour choice of yellow and thinking of reverting to white..? I presume that the delays are partly down to the slow delivery of bucket seats and paint, although B&Q have - I understand - offered to step in if required on the latter front. Jeff

still in this spec atm, must have to lock it soon !

Looks good D, although I quite like the satin wheels with yellow for a bit of contrast. Have you decided on PCCB or are you sticking with steel? Jeff

If you're interested, yet another GT4 article: http://www.topgear.com/uk/photos/porsche-cayman-gt4-drive-top-gear-magazine-2015-05-12 And here's a stat comparison with the latest Lotus Evora: http://www.topgear.com/uk/photos/lotus-evora-400-vs-porsche-cayman-gt4-2015-05-18 Jeff

One of the PH-ers has been very busy collecting GT4 pics. Most appear to be German cars with the latest pics here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=231&t=1492081&i=220&mid=0&nmt=GT4+colours+ Can't say that dark blue, black or grey does anything for me and although I think silver suits the daintier lines of my 987.2, I'm not so sure about the 981; although it most probably looks better in the flesh. Jeff

Auto throttle-blip assisted downchanges Rob? Quick off the mark too, with very little wheel spin. Just goes to show that you don't need PDK launch control to achieve a quick get-away. Jeff

Hi Jeff I realised that was hoping someone might have suggested they could do that just as well without electronic interference[:D]. I am sure there are manuals with a launch control option but as you say not in this case and it sure shot off p d q[;)]

er he has no got auto blip on ! that's just full manual :) got an invite to the GT4 UK launch event, seems it's only for guys who have been allocated cars though but it's in about 2 weeks time. Not sure what it's all about as the drives are the month after. but exciting that we get to go in 2 weeks :) things are moving now, 1st UK car should be with customers in July also if they had normal seats, of which a few I know could not wait and choose them.

Well, assuming the driver's a journo it's obligatory to have the SPORT button pressed: The SPORT button activates automatic throttle-blipping for downshifts and provides sporty gear changes.

you are correct, I was thinking it had sports plus which it does not, and the car was in fact in sports mode with auto blip.
