Exhausts for the (northern) boys!

I went to AAS in Newcastle upon Tyne this morning (Google them) as they custom make exhausts and roll cages for a whole host of cars and race series.

I showed them the pictures of the Fabspeed 3" system and asked for a price to make something similar. After Stuart had corrected me that they wouldn't make something similar, they'd make something better - he gave me a price of £550 fitted.

He wasn't a fan of the Fabspeed backbox options due to the quality (or lack of) of the welds and a strong suspicion that they were rebranded Chinese backboxes.

This would be for a 2-part exhaust with the wastegate tie-in, centre silencer delete and a choice of exhaust tip. He could do it in full 3" or 3" graduating down to 2.5" to keep exhaust gas velocity up and noise down if required or simply a full system in 2.5"

They are always busy and the next slot he could offer me was mid-November. There isn't a discount for a group buy I'm afraid but he did say that they could either make one up on my car and ship it elsewhere if necessary or make it up ready for fitting onto another car if someone wanted a one-day fitting.

Post up here if you're interested, myself and Martin will no doubt be the guinea pigs.

A mate of mine had an AAS on his Civic racecar (1600 B-series, 1.41 fastest lap at Cadwell!!)
- AAS very highly rated

Blimey that sounds good, and if they're booked up four three months in advance they must do decent work to have that sort of order book.

I've been looking at H&S (no one on the island fabs their own exhausts unfortunately) but it's just over £800 before delivery and fitting so if these guys turn out to be worth a shout I'd be interested in seeing if they could do just a build & delivery for my S2 perhaps (if anyone else fancies a go first feel free [:D]).

November isn't an issue either, that's my christmas present from the wife sorted!

Ditto, will follow this one.

The ceramic coated exhaust and manifold that they made for my mate's Supercharged Atom is something else!

If anyone has any questions then post them here, once there are a few I'll go and get some answers.

They were working on this today:

Will keep an eye on this Dave, exhausted as i have been at my 997 all day changing back boxes for by pass system (Gundo, Google it) luckily my mate Mark who has his own garage did the majority of the b***ard it will not move graft ! loads of grinding and cutting and swearing but we got there in the end he will not be beaten !!
Sounds supberb now, it spits and pops on overun, but is not too intrusive in the cockpit !

Think they are the ones who made the one that came on my 2.7 - I love it, fruity but not too loud and and very well made. Try to swap it to the S2 but only the back half fits, S2 and 2.7 have different exhaust headers!

Dave, Gundo all the way, not too loud, but a definite improvement, also pops and spits on overrun, if his car is a Gen 1 i can sort my original boxes with a Gundo and let him have them for near enough cost to cover my conversion circa £300.
Needs to be done and a gauranteed smile, just sounds right but not too much with 38 mm pipes.

Very nice sound in price. I went over lots off routes and choices and I couldn't a system for less then 1500. including the turbo discharge pipe.

3" System is what your all want. However fitting that to the stock discharge pipe it will need to reduce undr 3" like LR system which is where the 3" is the most important part. Still can get the smaller pipe made up at a later date, reduction part changed, else where as the turbo will most likely need to be off. Be worth getting them to make a 3" turbo back, Could work from a stock one but with test fitment. Still very worth while solution

Or by the fab speed turbo elbow in a group buy? Get the rest made up. However I'm sure my fab speed wasn't 3"

Stainless, not including the weird elbow thing but I'm confident they could make one if given a car to work from.

Or perhaps just a Fabspeed 3" Turbo elbow [8|]? I would defo' be interested in a full Stainless Steel system in 3" from the
Turbo back [8D]!

Iv got a stock turbo and elbow if that helps out. But I'm sure 3" elbow can get in the way off the dip stick so ideally you need a car. With the turbo out or at least acessable. 3" system won't bolt up to a stock turbo pipe, flange is to small, Be worth while getting tial 2bolt flanges put on at the waste gate connection if your running or going that way.

I guess they could borrow my car for a month at the end of the year before He goes to JMG. I'm going the whole hog, with a
new, larger ball bearing turbo and, it would be good to have a full 3" system from the new turbo, all the way back [8D].

Count me in, do they require a deposit ? Cheers

Also intrested in this. I have a spare turbo downpipe I am willing to send to see if they can do this in 3". PM me if needed.

Now I'm all confused as from what I can tell the Fabspeed turbo elbow isn't a 3" pipe at all but 2.75" as is the stock one.

Other available exhausts seem to taper from 3" down to whatever the diameter of the down pipe is. The H&S exhaust goes back down to 2.5" at the backbox even.

I guess I'd need to know the following:

1: diameter of the turbo outlet?
2: ideal diameter of exhaust from down pipe back to tailpipe?
3: should the exhaust diameter go back down to 2.5" further back to increase exhaust gas speed?
4: turbo elbow, what diameter and why (3" seems to interfere with chassis and require modification)?

Given the complexities of removing the down pipe I can't help but think there are 2 options going forward:

1: owner fits down pipe of choice first, get exhaust made to fit accordingly with taper to flange if necessary.
2: exhaust tapers to stock down pipe diameter at flange and bolts up, future down pipe change would necessitate cutting off taper and welding in new diameter pipe between 3" exhaust and flange.

Changing the down pipe at the same time seems to make sense but this would greatly extend the fitting time and cost.
