Forum upgrade

Love the desire to upgrade and give us a better experience, however I have to agree with many comments already made about iPad navigation. Sure it will just take a little time that's all.

I have to say, this is a pile of shi*e. Final nail in the PCGB forum coffin for me sadly.

I also think this new forum is a step backward! As a quality manager I have a number of views on what to do to correct this situation of disgruntled forum visitors etc, but I'll continue monitoring before I "pipe" up anymore!

Definitely not scientific analysis, and I can't compare to any other reference point, but I just counted the quantity of visitors to the Register forums and there was a total of 16 logged in (note, a whole 9 were viewing the 944 register forum). That just seems too low in my opinion, surely the intent of this upgrade is to "wow" and "sell" the PCGB "brand?"

Now there's a question: "What is this forum's Unique Selling Point?"

Good question. [:)]

I've been involved in the Club for about 12 years, the 944 register for about 10 years, and the forum for about the same length of time.

I've moved from owner to volunteer, and from volunteer to roles as a Register Secretary and forum administrator. Neither through choice, just down to the need for someone to step up at the time.

I've long argued that this forum needs to stand apart from the other options. To me the key things are open access for non-members in most areas as that brings experience and knowledge. Also, that the forum has a more "mature" feel to it: less swearing, trolling and generally a less bullying environment than some others.

I wonder if there has been enough research done in to the type of people who are the forum regulars? Perhaps there has been some move to what is perceived as a modern look, at the expense of actual usability? I'd lay money on the fact that a lot of the users here treat this forum as a one-stop shop, and would prefer it to be better layed out than other forums.

I don't even want to raise the point of average age, but it might be relevant...

Hmmm, actually feels better on my HTC1 M8 iih, not sure what all the fuss is about but then I don't use Apple. Aside from the looks - which we'll get used to, think of it as new wallpaper in the living room and pretty soon you won't even notice (and let's face it the old one looked a bit long in the tooth if you ask me) all seems ok. Few mins spent looking about saved me asking where this and that is, although the line spacing is a tad annoying.

+1 for the new forum then.

Do I get a badge?

I have found a number of the above comments to be of great interest.

Paul and I (and others) were involved in test driving the new forum before its release. A lot of the comments raised here were noted...and adressed in the most part. So this is the refined version. Can you imagine what the original was like?

It is perhaps because we saw the original that this seems better, but the question remains "Is it better enough"?

Using the common "The forum is like a pub" analogy, provided that we can hear each other talk the suroundings are almost irrelevant. I don't think we should fret over the forum's USP, that should continue to be the conversations, not the suroundings. There is a concern, none the less, if the suroundings are stifling conversation.

Only 15 posts since my last visit 17hours back! Where is everyone?
I hope that it is as simple as people following the wrong link and that people aren't being frightened off by the new layout. Once you are used to it then it's not a huge problem, but there is a reasonable acclimatisation hump to get over.

Oli.

I have noted a couple more niggles...first when on the main 944 page it no longer lists who's online, yes when you go to individual threads it lists users viewing that thread but not the 944 forum in general...imho that needs addressing. Second when using my phone if viewing a thread and i want to go back to the main 944 page i can't without using the back arrow first. We need the '944' tab at the top of the page same as when using a desktop.

Martin,

it is not a trail version of the software, it is a trial license which is already in the process of being upgraded.

The upgrade of the license could take several days as it is all done via email but does not affect the functionality of the software.

I'm trying to overcome my initial dislike of the new appearance and operation, but there are a few things which are obviously not right. When viewed on my phone the 'New' tab masks the first part of the subject, although there appears to be a lot less wasted space than when viewed on a PC. Despite asking it to remember my login it has so far failed to do so and not all of 'Today's Posts' appear in 'Unread Posts'. The latter now runs to 15 pages regardless of how many I view and I much preferred the previous version where items were no longer regarded as unread after the list had been presented. There are also some threads where it is not possible to go to the last post viewed.

not meaning to be picky, but should that not have been sorted before the upgrade...

If I did that in my job my boss would kick my ass big time
