Fuel Lines

Notwithstanding mounting points etc, I'm fascinated to see that the fuel line location on a Lux is on the passenger side not the drivers side as with S2, Turbo etc ! I had to check the photos a couple of times to get my bearings...
 
I replaced mine with braided hoses the whole length. I'm not happy about them,they smell of petrol,but there is no leaks! Copper isn't usually the best choice as it is a soft metal and doesn't resist knocks like other metals. My VW Golf lines were replaced with some sort of steel alloy that resists corrosion .
 
This is a job I would also like to do at some point.

as the OP said, can anyone post the name of the connectors that join to the pump and the fuel rail?

hopefully its possible to get them in this sort of configuration ebay
the threaded ends connect to fuel pump/rail and use a rubber hose between the two.
 
Mine are the braided pipes from RPM. They don't smell of petrol! I can't see how they could, unless petrol is getting out somewhere? That can't be right....
 
It's like the fumes are seeping through the hoses. Annoyed as they weren't cheap and are quite possibly useless.

Where did you get plastic ones from?

I'd go back to the supplier, ask him to look underneath and assure you they aren't faulty. Possibly suggest he lights a match if he's that convinced.

SAE J30 R6? This is susceptible to ethanol degradation, as far as I am aware - hence my initial post, as it happens.

Supply is 10mm and return is 8mm. I use Kunifer pipe for it. Fittings are DIN as the ends of the flare are square NOT SAE. I can get the pipe quite easily from a local supplier as well as the fittings. Much nicer than braided hose which sags all over the place and you can't get it into the proper cable clamps. The pipe works out about £80 to buy with fittings but it comes in 10 metre rolls I think so enough just for 2 cars.

Depends how exposed, normally they are run in protective indents and if they get squashed the car has had serious damage and if the contact points are isolated there are no corrosion issues but Kunifer is a bit harder. I use it all the time, its self supporting so doesnt need as many support fixings as flex pipe.

Then change them! If it's the high pressure side you`ve got about 45psi going through them! Also with braided hoses you cant see any degredation (or leaks) -

 
Thanks guys.I am using Kunifer brake lines but my local supplier could notdo kunifer fuel lines.I will get some from a supplier in glasgow.944 man your link was very interesting full of good information most of which I didn't know.
 
I am giving all of my trade secrets away again! This company sells very nice flaring machines (Snap On sells them in a nice Snap On box but this company makes them!) and also the dies and probably the 8 and 10mm DIN pipe fittings as well. You will need to specify the dies when ordering though. This is who i use for fittings, etc though they may be trade only!

3/8 NPT is a pipe thread and IIRC is close to 10mm x 1 metric but not good enough for me so I use NPT to metric adapters (and you MUST use teflon tape [PTFE] with NPT threads)

The OP seemed to have done quite a bit of research and found that Ebay - SAEJ30R9 is the best thing to use for modern fuels containing ethanol.

This article on hotrod.com supports the above theory, but suggests J30R9 is a budget solution, and Teflon (PTFE) hose is the best option. As does 944 man's thread.

So personally I've decided to ditch the idea of kunifer, and I'm going to go with either Teflon or R9. I think it will be easier to fit (with the addition of a few extra clips underneath). I don't have flare the ends of the rigid line, and I don't have to worry about replacing the flex hoses at either end as the whole lot will get swapped in one go!

Although.. I'm still not exactly sure what the original connector sizes are. Alasdair (who I'm sure is correct!) has suggested the end of the rigid lines are DIN (which seem extremely hard to find!). Is this the same for the fuel rail/FPR? On this photo I've marked the joints I'm referring to as 1 and 2. (I've got a feeling they are M16 x 1.5)

could you elaborate on the diameter of hose and connectors you used?

The hard lines are 8 and 10 mm. The ends are the same either end of the line. Much easier to use the hard lines as you won't have to replace them ever again if you use the kunifer, give them a coat of underseal after you have put them on. You may also find that MOT legislation may be changing in the future, all these things seem to be tightening up at the moment. The flexible hose route in my eyes is just a waste of time! I shouuld sell lengths of Kunifer with the ends formed on them!
