GTS 4.0

Well 150 miles clocked up now, and still like a 5 year old at Christmas. Love the engine. Mine came with Pirellis, which wasn't my preference (I believe some come with Michelins just depending on stock) but there seems to be plenty of grip. Once I can start pushing the revs I might be keener to swap to Michelins. Anyone want to buy 4x Pirellis with 150 miles on them? :-D

Of the miles I have done, I drove 15 miles on a dual carriageway today. My only slight gripe is that with the roof up at 70mph in 7th gear (about 2100 rpm) there is a noticeable drone. The exhaust button seems to make no difference at all at those revs. Has anyone else noticed that? It's not too bad, but might be annoying on a long journey. Fortunately I don't plan to be driving the car on dual carriageways much...

Ah! Thanks. Do you mean the red LED light on the button should be illuminated, or off? I have been driving with the auto stop start disabled all of the time (ie the LED light is illuminated on the button) as I don't like it, and usually just re-enable it if I'm in congestion. Anyhow I'll have a play. Worth a try.

 
Sorry. I can’t remember and my Spyder is not nearby To check. I just recall the drone on the overrun and cruising. There are also weird engine noises after about 1-3mins of driving. But they all do it. Probably more noticeable in a Spyder as less sound deadening. BTW my car is a manual.

The exhaust valves are closed between 1,800 and 3,800 rpm regardless of the sports exhaust button, so you are quite correct that the switch makes no difference at those revs. It sounds quite strange when the revs rise to 3,800 and the exhaust valves open. You can get a Cargraphic exhaust valve controller which gives you the option of having the valves open at all revs. Works very well and sounds much more natural.

 
Yeah I read it last night. So I had already disabled 3 cylinder running by disabling auto stop start. It's a shame the 2 settings are linked like that. I'd quite like to be able to disable auto stop start but keep cylinder deactivation. Oh well.

Unless you drive it like you stole it, you probably won't notice much difference between Pirellis and Michelins, just mind the kerbs as the Pirellis don't have as much rim protection.

I am sure I read that the exhaust drone diminishes when you get a bit of soot build up and the sound improves, but can't find the link☹

Going to be great to hear how you compare the 4.0 to your old 3.4👍

Yeah, particularly with the rears the rim protection is more or less non existent. All I'll say is I've had several cars with P Zeros, and several with PS3S, PS4S. To me there is a big difference. In the dry, but particularly when you suddenly hit a patch of road with poor traction when conditions are a bit greasy. Perhaps it's partly in my head. On my ridiculous looking front wheel drive hot hatch switching from the Contis the car had from new to PS4S was like night and day. It was impossible to use 2nd gear planted in the dry without wheelspin / traction control kicking in with the Contis, but the Michelins really transformed the car. As for the 4.0 compared to the 3.4, I have to say that although I am still being very gentle with the accelerator and keeping the revs down, the extra torque at say 2-3K revs is noticeable and something I already really like. 235 miles in, and over 200 of those on B roads. Lucky to live in the Chilterns with some great driving roads. Also lucky it's been dry so the roads aren't too muddy. Again it might be in my head, but it seems like the map / software on the gearbox in auto mode is better in the 718 than the 981. It makes better gear choices. In the 981 I generally used the paddles most of the time apart from the motorway, but I've been impressed by the 718 in auto mode.

 
Hi, new car being delivered this May? Wondering about paint protection etc? Current 981 GTS has bad gravel rash on the trailing edge of rear arches and a couple of stone chips on the bonnet. Have PPF on the front of the rear wings and Zunsport grilles in the front air scoops. What are owners doing with the new car? Any advice would be appreciated? Thanks Keith

Hi Keith, congratulations on getting to the top of the waiting list, you will be making a lot of people jealous.

When did you place your initial deposit, which OPC. This helps us who are on the dreaded waiting list see how the process is moving forward. Oh, and post your configuration to make us all envious.

I am also hopefully going from 981 to 718 4.0. I will again fit Zunsport grills, my OPC doesn't mind them. My intention is ceramic coating with some PPF in critical areas. I have a good relationship with SW Autoworx so will just get their advice.

Preston is miles away, but they found my current pre-owned car for me, and were all round brilliant. That's making me far more optimistic that I will get to the build process.

It seems OPCs are getting around 8-12 cars each this year dependent on their general sales numbers and order list. This also confirms what my salespersons have said about expecting better allocations and that they have had their sales targets increased.

I do like GT Silver, with red interior. That's the same as my 981 but with a red top. I was tempted to go the same again, but just love Shark Blue, with Ice Grey Metallic another possibility although it's probably a bit too close to GT Silver to warrant the extra cost.

In regard to the PPF, just check if you are insured by either Aviva or PIS as according to members on the 911 part of this forum they class it as a modification and it will invalidate your insurance...crazy especially with PIS as it is something you can get your OPC to install😱
