Nearly a Porsche 908 ish...[&:]

Body work is very tedious, though not as bad as bloody rivets. Went to Cosford National air Meuisum today and all i could see were rive...[] Amazing construction skills to say the very least. Tonight the lola looks like this: You can just imagine: 5500rpm, drop the clutch and hold on to 500 bhp/tonne. Snatch (ish) 2nd (915 gearbox remember) and pedal to the metal. Briefly to 3rd and slam the brakes hard while clicking to 2nd. Sharp but smooth round the 90 degree left (3/4 of a turn lock to lock!).... and floor it to 3rd, and 4th....touch of opposite lock to trim the front end and dive to the left again with just a 'comfort dab' on the stoppers. Hit the throttle in 3rd, to 4th and really hard on the brakes to 2nd and flow the car through to the right.. Well, thats 1/4 of Loton Park hillclimb done, just the fast bit to go. [:D] Vrrrooome Vrrrooome [8|] [;)]

I think it looks better without the bodywork. Had you thought about doing some tests: 1) A run with all bodywork 2) A run without the rear bodywork 3)A run with no bodywork 4)A last run with bodywork to serve as an honesty check to balance end of day speed. I think that you would be quickest on 3[8|]

There is a growing trend in hillclimb formula classes to run 'naked'. No regs call for body or wheel covers, so my 'big go-kart' could run naked. Making the body mounts and all that takes for ages, and getting good alignment for the 8 pip-pins without stressing the body clams is a real pain. The p!$$ taking I would get at a hillclimb meet would be intolerable though, so I continue to saw at fibre glass and wrestle with the 2 parachutes.... I have to make and bond in water shields to the front wheels otherwise I will drown [8|] and several other bits and bobs yet. You had it easy in FF! It is not the best body shape I can think of (Lola T 212 is spot-on)

After many hours, the body is on at last. What a time consuming job, and that huge front clam is really awkward. There is a popular mod in Sport 2000 circles to fit a 3 part body, now I know why. Fitting the rear has revealed a problem with the rear suspension travel: there isn't enough....[:-] The aluminium Koni coil-overs do not extend enough, and as they are, the tyre is far too close to the rear arch. 3 solutions: Have Koni fit longer piston rods ($$$$$$$ [:-] ) Fit rose joints to the top piston rods (not too sure about that [&o] ) Move the top suspension pick-up points down 30mm. ( [8|] ) Will do #3 and have the new mounts pro welded as they are bolt-on to the rear chassis. I think that is the first backward step I've really had with this project. Autosport show on thursday with Brakes (Hispec or AP?) Clutch (Tilton?) and a zillion other things in mind. Irritating thing is they do not actually sell anything at the show! Work tomorrow, so back to a PC/emails/meetings/The Chinese and Head Office all asking why I'm late doing something they have not asked me for yet. [] Hope the Return will be a pleasent adventure for you all. I can think of far worse things to face tomorrow.

Fab car Kevin, really nice to see. I went to the Olton meeting last May of the Sports 2000 circus, great racing. Looks a lot of fun. Porsche Region run to Silverstone to support Kevin?

This project is strange. I work on the thing for ever, even go to sleep thinking about it (obsession?) and the next pic i take of it looks like the one I took 2 months ago... At least when I did my 911 Bitza 20 years ago i made seeable progress with each hour.[8|] Anyway, looks like this last weekend. Time to spend more $$$$$$$$ and get the rear brakes ( £700) and the oil cooler (350) and all the appropriate pipes (?).

Trying to sort the spring rates out now, esp for the rear. The 911 engine I have I think weighs 200Kg. Anyone able to confirm this please?

ORIGINAL: 911hillclimber So how many bhp does this take? Beautifully made and such a waste to remove it! [:)]

Unfortunately, you'll need a good medium to get in touch with the original engineer (Nick Speers), but if you did manage to contact him, he would talk all night with you about this project, through a dense haze of cigarette smoke, and a steady flow of alcohol.[:)] The next morning he would be flying, especially at Gurston Down, kept going on black coffee and more cigarettes! Lovely guy, we miss him a lot.............. Cheers, Nick![8D] JW

Then I'll live with the 2 %! First time I've looked under the exquisit shroud that covers the lot. I'm detailing the basic engine now as the basic chassis is all painted and ready to swallow it once and for all. Need to wrap the headers, get the clutch and assemble the lot together (and paint the gearbox..) Endless hours of paint brushing Smoothrite everywhere. Trial fitted the huge AP Racing calipers to the uprights on my custom made caliper mounts and they all fit (phew...) so the rear suspension is now getting painted (yawn) and lots of shiney new bolts everywhere, a mix of UNF (remember those?) and Metric. Endless list to get through, and I'm seriously thinking of chilling out and getting the car ready for 2010 season and chase Jonathan in my humble Bitza this year on the hills. I am sorely tempted to sell the body and fit a Kharmann Ghia shell (like it used to have) or even a Skoda shell, but that sounds a lot of work and more body mount tubes too. I think I need new wheels for the rear to clear the calipers unless I can space the wheel off the hub a bit. Everything is hard going at present!

No, don't slow up now when it's going so well Graham! I would get it all running and shaken down for at least a season before going down the Special Saloon body route - that will be a whole new set of problems[8|]. Going that way now risks it becoming one of those projects that's still not finished in another 10 years time................ Us old f*rts don't have that long[8D] Keep Going![:)] JW

You always manage to make me smile Jon [:D] Maybe once some of the details come together I will find some 'ommph' and the weather changes...[8|] So many small details to cover and my fading braincell is close to shutdown on the car. A weekend away with the wife on our 31st year of marriage this weekend might do it![&:] It was a year ago when I hatched the plan for this thing! A 3.5 on PMO's, a G50, some Red Brakes now sounds sooooo easy (and cheap) Graham The Grey Cloud []
