Horizontal fan on a 911? LOLA PORSCHE

Take a look at the last post on previous page too. Mag alloy upright, rarer than a pre impact 911 for a fiver, and some good brakes!

Drove my 492 for the first time at Snetterton the other week, mostly to sort out a comfy seat position etc. What a sweet handling little car, can't wait to start the 09 season. Keep up the progress reports. Regards Kevin

Been busy fitting a zillion new rivets to the alloy skin tub and prepping the rear frame for paint. The rear uprights are back from crack testing and the huge 10 litre dry sump tank arrived today from Pace, a shear work of art. Most of my time has been spent resolving the origins of the Lola and the quest to find the true chassis number. The car came to me without one. Just 2 days ago and with a lot of help from several people the identity of the car is confirmed and its colourful past revealed. The Flat 6 will be either the 6th or 8th engine it has had (lost count/confused by all the info and relying on peoples memories from the very early 80's) I think this will amuse you all: The car is a Lola T 490 made in 77 and sold to Ted Toleman (who went on to do the F2 and F1 Toleman Grand Prix cars) Several hot drivers used the car inc Daly. Only 10 were made before they upgraded the car to T 492 spec. 3 years later Ted sold the car to Tony Dickinson who dropped a Skoda body on it and a Hart engine. This was his 3rd Skoda. The car then sold on to Harry Humberstone who had the car re-bodied with a Karmann Ghia body and an RS 200 engine. Harry's son Alan crashed the car big time. The car then sold as a wreck to Autoquip where Brian rebuilt a bit of it before loosing interest. He in turn sold it with a cossie turbo engine and Hewland box to Mike. Mike started a neat rebuild as a hillclimb/sprint car. He then sold the rolling chassis to me. There are a few savory bits missing, I can't put them on a public forum, but they certainly add some flavour... I hope to press-on with the build now and over Xmas. Plan is to run the brake line to the rear, the clutch line and paint the rear of the car. Add the side pods and mount the 2 piece body support frames. I can then put the engine in and the box to do the oil line runs to the dry sump and cooler. If I get on with it the fuel lines can be run to the carbs too. I think I will be about 50% there by money and time! This is a mad project, but should be a continuation of the car's Bitza life.

Fascinating, Graham. What a history! I'm looking forward to hearing a few more of the juicier details over a few pints in the Shelsley Bar.......[8D] I spoke to Terry D last week-end at the S.Wales bash. He's still interested in how you're getting on, and looking forward to seeing it in action. Looks as though I will be doing the Midland hills next year, as the Club have outlawed my car (and several others!) by introducing minimum weight limits[8|] Cheers JW

Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone. It is very very easy to loose the plot I tell you. When I built hotrods in the 70's it was the same, and that eventually led to the Bitza in 88. Thank goodness for that! [;)] Jonathan: You know the Midland makes sense, and some pokey competition to get stuck into! I think there will be quite a turn-round of that class in 2009 with a young hot-shot driving Dad's Quattro.... I think I'll be there as this year till the Lola Porsche is ready! Then I'll give you all a real laugh!! [&:] Dry sump tank nearly in situe after an afternoon in the 'den' today. Should have that done for tomorrow. All the rear suspension is done now, just some calipers to find (4 pots from HiTec I think). The engine and box can be loosed back into place (again...[:'(] ) and the oil lines measured. The tube to use is £1 /inch! Plus the -20 fittings so yet another few hundred. A 3.5 on PMO's with Boche ignition, turbo brakes and slicks seems far far far more sane? [:D] Mad. This is just to remind me of: What a Lola t 492 looks like instead of my scrap heap What it looks like in Red, but I like the yellow bits too. Might copy this scheme. What absolute bloody FUN it looks! [8D] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Here is the Lola in about 1982 as the Skoda withTony Dickinson driving in the Wendy Wools Championship. It still has the wheels etc.

Graham, I,like many others have been "grabbed" by your sheer excitement & enthusiasm about your project, especially in this post *ankers meltdown gloom.I still can't find the time to write my share of the Xmas cards, let alone change the oil in the 924S & BMW as well as rebond the tailight lens's on the 964.However ,I have nearly finished the rebuild of the Triang Willys jeep that my son had 42 yrs ago & is now going on lend to his 4yr old daughter prior to moving on to my Daughter's new born son, At Oulton Park meetings-you're right-it was great fun only watching(and in the paddock) the similar hybrids of run of the mill motor GRP shells mounted on racing chassis being hammered round the track.Keep up the good work-remember "Nihil Carborundom Illegitimus". Merry Xmas, Colin.(jealous)

Only had a few hours in the Den. Trish wanted to go out as the rain had stopped(!) so we went to an large Antiques Fair. Found a great old guitar there...but resisted (I have 6 already [:D] ) and thought about what £400 would buy on the Lola! It's taken 3 hours to mount the dry sump tank and I still have the top mounts to do, but that bit is simple in comparison. It is a bit tight in this corner..

The oil circuit looks like this sketch when done. The cooler is about the same surface area as a late 3.2 911 'front-wing' rad (not the serpentine one) but with bigger dia pipes. That will be another £350 thank you.[] Dead simple. [8|]

Looking better each time I see it :)
ORIGINAL: Lightweight_911 From my point of view this is the most interesting/fascinating thread that there's ever been on the PCGB forum ...
Totally agree Andy, just good honest engineering and real enthusiasm, what it should be all about [;)]

I crumpled my hand last weekend working on the Lola and thought a week off would help prepare for a Big Push over Xmas. I even went to Demon Tweeks yesterday! I have a Xmas work plan to meet:[>:] Finish the dry sump mount fabrication off. DONE! Put the engine and box back in and finish the engine mounts off. Re-fit all the suspension Mount front and rear body clams: lots of thin wall brace tubes and alignment to do. will takes for ages I know.[:'(] Re-form the side pods to match the body sides (too wide at the moment) and rivet them in place.[] Run the rear brake lines. Was going to use Goodridge hose but sooo $$$ so copper nickle instead unless I change my mind (possible) Order the dry sump adaptors from Smart Racing in the USA (more $$$) Order the custom cooler from Pace.[:(] ($$$$$$$$) Get ticket to autosport show as it will be crunch time on the clutch to buy. Probably a twin plate from Super Clutch as I know the owner well. Remember I have a wife, so must not ignore her as she is the Racing Team's finance director/ budget controller.[;)] I would like to get the silencers and mount them as a cherry on the cake. Work continues to look a bit iffy, so need to be careful.....[]

I'll also own up to being a porsche and Sports 2000 fan here is my S2 chevron and trackday SC [link=http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d76/bruceb1964/june2008019.jpg]http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d76/bruceb1964/june2008019.jpg[/link] [link=http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d76/bruceb1964/por.jpg]http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d76/bruceb1964/por.jpg[/link] Graham, you sure need to keep those photo's of the modified Lola on here, but you know that already right !

Chevron looks fab to say the least. hope my bitza will look as good when done! Spent ages in the Den, but seem to have progressed little.[:'(] Dry sump tank fully mounted, roll cage back in to stiffen the tub to normal, and re-installed the Ralt/Lola front corners. Must buy some UNF fasteners to use all-new nylocs and washers on the build-up. The engine and exhaust will go back in ready to mount the Custom Chrome Cherry Bombs (bling [;)] ) I really need to get the calipers soon and run the brake lines, Copper or aeroquip? Cost ratio about 1:10 Strangely, I feel the car will move foreward a lot over the next 6 weeks. Just need the $ to go to 2:1 to the pound so I can buy the big PMO's.[8|] Are my webers worth anything? This is the other Lola tub the Skoda was fitted to before mine. 305 bhp apparently. I love the 'hotrod' side of these super Saloons.

I hope I'm not alone spending hours in the frosty garage? Making progress: Side pods on and body mounts made up (took for ever) and 60 solid rivets later all is well. Positioned and mounted the rear half of the body today which was the usual nip-n-tuck till it sat down correctly. The rear suspension is set too low by about 25mm, but it all starts to look like a car (from far away and rosey glasses....[;)] ) Need to make the rear support frame and triangulate it well for the mega down force this will generate ( 1970's aerodynamics at play here [8|] )
