My Turbo might be for sale!

ORIGINAL: PJS917

Nick,

After the above interlude[8|] How is the sale going? I fear yours may be under priced, whilst out yesterday I stopped to look at a nice 944 Cab in the local garage, 71k on the clock FPSH and not bad condition, but not as good as some, the price £9999.00.

Interlude, hmmm yes!

Got one interested party thus far, so we will see!

Anyone who is looking at £3-4k examples and doesn't know the cars, isn't going to look twice at mine, so it's a case of wating for the right person to come along.

Might put it on P'heads tomorrow.

I'm having a look at my prospective purchase up on the ramps this week - if that's not as good as I believe it to be, then the sale may well be off anyway!

Hilux has his car on PH now, if that doesn't sell at that money I'd be suprised.

I thought the 968 castor mounts were only needed if you were running larger wheels (like the Cup 1/Cup 2s that the majority of 944 owners seem to go for)? As I understand it, the standard ones are better for standard wheels. Have I been misled?
If you go to an OPC now and ask for a replacement castor mount it is likely they will spec and supply the 968 part anyway. It sharpens the handling regardless of any other factor because they use much less rubber in the mount.

Not another 944ist defecting!!! I can appreciate the 911 itch, as I have one also (and a Cayman itch) but I just couldn't bear to get rid of the 944 turbo at the moment. I've come to the conclusion that i'll have to scratch my 911 itch with a modern variant of the car - I just don't think a 964/993 would be as good as a 944 turbo in terms of grunt, pace and handling - and before someone jumps on me, i'm not dissing them, very nice and desirable cars i'd love either as well as my 944 turbo, just not instead of - different cars, horses for courses and all that. I sort of feel i'd only want to swap the 944 for something that would be a step up in terms of performance. The improvement in 'soul' and the soundtrack of the engine would be nice, but not a substitute for performance for me. It's about time someone invented a head unit that has a rev counter input so you can play an 'aircooled 911' sound synchronised to your actual engine revvs and gear changes.

Anyway, whatever happens I wish both Nick and Paul all the best in their 944 replacements.

My carrera on a trackday at snetterton was much quicker around the corners than a 944t. This was also confirmed by Mike Wilds, the instructor who knows Porsche and drove the 944t in between driving my car twice. Also I found my car was only very very slightly slower than a 964. The 964 owner was convinced my cars engine was tweaked...

To the original poster of this thread: Would you consider a straight swap for my carrera? It does sound as though my car may not be as 'nice' as yours though. I forget my exact mileage but approx 11#,000. My engine is 100% stock.

I have a 930 and I would like a car my wife would be more comfortable in eitherwise I can see us buying a BMW...

Agreed evidence from racing suggests differences are much smaller then many think, I also recall an Autocar test several years ago in which an 80's carrera was pulling more or less 1g on the skid pan. I recall vividly the pictures showing the car with one front wheel in the air and the outside rear wheel stuffed up in the arch, it still went and gripped like mad though.

Thanks for the offer, but it is really a 964 that I am after, one that can then be 'optimised' for track work!

The ideal would be a recreation of a 964RS then?

Come to Daddy.....

Genuine RSs are getting very hard to find now (unless youre waiting for a ferry), but there are a couple of firms making RHD replicas. Id replace everything when it was worn with an RS-type upgrade and hope to end up with my own 964RS Johnny Cash style... [:D]

That's the plan - can't quite afford the £40k odd for the 9m replicas or the £60k for the genuine ones, slowly slowly upgrade/lighten a good C2 instead.

Great plan, I'd love to do the same one day. I don't think I could relax with an RS given its value and rarity, especially on track, so a car that gives most of the same bang for less bucks really appeals.

Jasmine in Nelson do something similar too; so they could be a source of advice/RS-esque upgrades. Theyd be better if they were in Yorkshire of course; but Im sure that you realise that.....[:D]

Ta very much. Its not replaced yet - someone coming to see it this weekend [&o]

I may one day get another `posh` car as a hobby but I`m spending (not a lot) money on getting this fully track prepped

The door handles are the same as a 944 though (which is nice [:D])

Its all about fun at the end of the day, everything else is just getting from A to B with as little fuss as possible. You only live once and all those other cliches but if you can you have to go for it. On reflection the only car related regrets I have revolve around hanging on to one car for to long. If anyone feels they will enjoy an old golf or a 964 more then go for it [:)]

Well said that man ^^^^^^^

At the end of the day, it's that person's cash, and they should spend it how they will enjoy it most ! [:D]
