New RMS Thread

Yes thank you Tim, but I was puzzled by this:

"The RMS has been fine since and I have now got about 65,000 miles on the clock and have not used any oil. On the Garage floor there is a slight mark from an oil drip but nothing significant - it goes from service to service with no top-up necessary."

Are you sure this isnt a repeat RMS failure?

My car goes in tommorow to the OPC. It was supposed to go in today but they rand me on Tuesday and said that they expect to have the car
for two days and they didn't have a spare car for me to drive away in for two days. However the did for thurs/fri so tommorow it goes in.

The plan is to take the RMS out, measure it with the mandrel and I hope (and have requested) they use an engineers caliper set to measure
the tolerance. Then they wil report back to Reading who will direct them what to do next. As far as I can see all eyes are on this job. I heard
from a little dickie bird that Reading have pre-warned Liverpool Mann Island Porsche to ensure they do this job correctly as it has high importance.
Apparently my last 4 RMS replacements they never used the mandrel. So this time the engineeer at Mann Island told me he has been instructed
NOT yes NOT to fix the RMS just to report back to reading with the findings. The car is to be left up on the ramps overnight waiting for a result.
I think it's fairly obvious what is happening here. If they find the tollerance is out (and lets face it after 4 seal replacements I think it will be)
then they will push for a replacement engine. If not then they will just fit a 4th seal under beady eyes of an expert who will be present (not sure
if he is there from PAG or READING or wot!). If it's a new engine then I dunno what happens as I certain;y don't have even $500 towards one.
Remember I have also to fork out £3,300 for a new gearbox!!!

I have some concerns though if they fit a replaement engine. My engine is ultra reliable. It never coughs. It's just that it has a big RMS problem.
But I have heard some horror stories from 996 owners who have had replacement (rebuilt) engines. So I am a little nervous.

I will let you knoe the outcome as I find out.

Nic,

The oil mark on the garage floor was probably from the original problem as it is not a growing puddle. Crawled underneath the car and the sump was oily but does not have drips coming off.

I recently took it in for an annual service and told them (Camtune) to check it out. They said it was not dripping and was probably fine residue from oil change/flushing etc. If it was leaking it was so little it was virtually insignificant. They have cleaned off the whole underside so I will be crawling underneath on a regular basis from now on to check.

What happens if a leaking RMS is not changed. Most reports state that only a few drips of oil appear. Does it get worse or what??

Tim

If you dont change the RMS the oil continues to drip and you top it up.

Eventually the leak gets worse and the amount will eventually contaminate your clutchplate.

Defining 'eventually' is a difficult one. Depending on use, mileage etc. I suppose topping up with oil will put off the inevitable for quite a good long while.

Enough time to save up your legal fees to employ Rumpole of the Bailey I wonder???

Well, the engineer has confirmed that the RMS crank bore hole is ovalled and my car needs a new engine. I haven't actually been able to speak
with the engineer but the girl at the service desk tells me this is what the engineer told her to say. Anyway, they won't have any answers for me
until Monday. I guess there will be a lot of deliberating between my OPC and Reading and possibly PAG. The issue now has grown into a very serious
and grave one as I now have a 996 which is laid up at my OPC with complete powertrain problems. Engine and gearbox!
I just hope that this being my 5th RMS (and probably a world record) they will replace the engine buck shee.

stay tuned monday.....

Difficult to know if this is good or bad news...

Hopefully they will do the "right thing" and do it "goodwill".
Fingers crossed for you.

[]2000 996 with FPSH and 5 RMS to date how could they even think of charging you a single penny [&o] The cost of replacing your engine FOC is insignificant compared to the goodwill it would be buying [;)] Good luck anyway and I hope you have a semi decent loaner in the meantime

It's crunch time for Porsche as far as you are concerned. - To be honest, given your history, I really cant see how they can do anything but the right thing.

I hope your right Adrian.

I just got off the phone from Mann Island and they said they are now waiting to hear back from PAG as to what action will be taken next. They expect an answer by late this afternoon or tommorow morning.

G-d I hate this waiting game.......another night without any sleep :(

Still got my fingers crossed Berny - i do hope they make a decision soon, cos i can't cross em for much longer (three weeks now [:D]).

Just hope Mann Island have learnt the art of customer service []

Thanks again guys.

Alas there's still no decision.
Mann Island are awaiting for Porsche to make a decision who is going to pay for the engine. They said "Technical have now passed it to customer services and customer services are still yet to give them an answer". The car is currently up on the ramp in pieces, I mean even the engine and gearbox! Apparently the crank is out of the engine! They promised to have an answer for me tomorrow. The longer this waiting game goes on the more I am thinking the worst. And from the tone of voice of the service manager I think I am getting a message that he is trying to tell me that the answer will very likely be that PAG will NOT pay for the new engine. But I will just have to sit it out another night for the answer.

This waiting game is heart breaking. I guess my heart must be in good nick otherwise I am certain I would have had a heart attack by now with all this stress and frustration. This whole affair is is very trying. I am not getting any work done. Not sleeping or eating and I am not exactly the best person to be around right now. Oh and BTW, I started smoking again after giving up 10 months ago....... I just hope they have enjoyed this punishment they are giving me.

Is it just me or am I right in thinking this should be a straightforward decision. I buy a 996 (my 3rd Porsche) and at 27,000 miles it gets an RMS problem and the gearbox begins to whine. The car's been treated like a baby. Polished and cleaned, garaged. Never tracked. No accidents. Always serviced by the book and by Porsche. It has been in and out of the workshop for more Rear Main Seals than anyone probably on a worldwide basis, I have written to both PUK and PAG. I have phoned Germany and spoke to their worldwide service manager. I have obtained the support of many Porsche owners worldwide through internet forums. I have threatened legal action. I have threatened to go to the media. And on top of this PCGB has done the survey and discussions are ongoing. Wouldn't you think that in view of all this they would want to make ammends and just fix the car? What is taking them so long?

For a good explaination of the fitting process of the RMS (and Secondary shaft seal), 911 & Porsche World have a good article on page 106 of the new (November) issue.
They suggest it is a possible DIY job (along with the clutch replacement on the previous 5 pages!)

Who will be the first to attempt this as a DIY job (No - it won't be me!)

(The link to the old thread is -->HERE<-- by the way...)

You won't believe the outcome. It's quite unbelieveable.

My OPC called to say that Reading can't come to a decision so they are building my engine/gearbox/car back up and will hand it back to me on Friday. They have requested a rebuilt engine and new gearbox but they can't decide who will pay for it. Since there is no answer they have no option but to give me the car back as it came into them. At least I will get another RMS....the 6th RMS in the same engine!

So I called Reading. They said that they can't make a decision until the dealership give them the estimates of the cost of either rebuilding or replacing the engine. Until they get the quote from Mann Island, they can't make any decision.

I called back Man Island and asked why haven't they sent the quote off to Reading? What's the hold up? They have had the car for almost a week. They said that only 10 minutes before he called me did he find out that this is what they are waiting for.

I read 4 things here:

1) There is no way in the world that Porsche UK will agree to replace my engine FOC. At best they will
ask for a handsome ammount of cash towards good-will. If my gearbox claim is anything to go by I would say
they will ask for 50% of cost.

2) I am fairly certain that PAG, the factory have not been involved in this decision. In fact I doubt that PAG
are aware of my problems at all.

3) The idea that they take every case by its merit is a load of sh*te. How much merit do they want for Christ's sake!

4) We are all wasting our time. Porsche simply don't acknowledge the RMS problem. As far as PUK are concerned,
if they offer any good will then they are doing us a favour.

Nic, when do you expect to push forward with the 996 survey and has there been any more discussions with PUK?
I brought up the 986 survey several times with Reading and they simply shrugged it off. With everything
gone quiet from PCGB on this matter the pressure has deflated and they obviously are feeling as if
they don't have to justify themselves. I.e., they won that battle....

So where do you all think we go from here?

Bernie,
I would suggest a phone call to Porsche GB and drop a few words like BBC and Watchdog to them. I'm sure they really wouldn't want the negative publicity that would provide.
It strikes me that they're in breach of the sale of goods act, with repeated RMS failures, there is obviously something wrong! Either the engine as a whole or the actual RMS are not of merchantable quality....but I'm sure that this has been raised before!

Bernie,

Keep shhtum, collect your car letting them know you still consider the repair insufficient and drive off into the sunset.

Then, when they have made up their minds and send you a bill, refuse to pay - let them take you to Court if they dare!!!!

Just imagine the publicity!!!

Bill?? This one!!

Berny,

The 996 survey was mailed out yesterday. You should get yours soon.

It asks about major failures as well as RMS

What can I say to you that adequately expresses our feelings?

What you need is a mole inside Porsche Cars, to explain how things really operate on their side of the fence.
