New Turbo: took the plunge!

OK, I am always willing to listen to the voice of experience over a sales guy that has only ever spent a few hours test driving the car.

Any other options/things I should be considering?

I am thinking of fitting the car with something like VentureShield protection film, and also having 35% tinted privacy glass fitted. Any views on these?

Also, should I be pushing to get free mats? A hundred quid or so does seem a bit steep ("steep, steep, that's f'ing vertical")

Cheers [:)]

Good choice on the leather over the ally. The TT is the lux-model of the 911 range where leather-everything seems more in tune... Ally is hardcore/cold/hard... more suitable for a GT3.

I think the Cocoa interior is lush, but probably nicer with a black/meteor grey exterior.

Forget Ventureshield, go with Paintshield for the full frontal coverage back to the A-pillars. Paintshield do all of OPC Readings' cars.

My reasoning on the Ally rather than Leather was to lift and accent the interior...
Nice having the leather but some of the specs on the US cars can show you how not to do it [;)] OTT
It can also leave a car looking rather plain in relation to it all being the same interior colour.
Its all down to personal taste at the end of the day and I wouldn't knock anyone for their own personalised spec (apart from some obvious ones!!![:'(])

I had Ally centre console and vents on my 996 which was a black interior(actually spec'd by the OPC), that along with the red seatbelts lifted the interior just enough.

Alex speak to the OPC and ask them to show you their additional options page... things like the leather in front of the gearstick are on it.

I wouldn't spec the mats, but certainly encourage the salesman to "add them" to your car.... and make sure you have it in writing.

This is becoming Scary !! all of us Turbo owners have rear wipers [;)]...

For exactly the same reasons as above...

and I'd spec it on the next one aswell

Interesting, as I too have noticed that a lot of turbos have the rear wiper.

Yet most non-turbos don't have the rear wiper.

Is it due to the different age groups that buy these different models? Porsche says average age of TT buyers is older 50 / 60+... therefore no sense of style I guess [;)] [:D] [;)]

Also, a higher % of turbo buyers are repeat buyers so maybe they are used to looking at a 911 with a rear wiper, like older versions have had before.

I would never spec a rear wiper cause I like many other feels it spoils the lines. For a VW Golf or Ford Focus, fair enough; 911, no thank you.

I've not need one in the 28 months I've been using my 911 as my daily driver.

yet clear at the rear:

With regards to the leather, like someone else already said, I too was going to spec the Cocoa but got talked out of it by the salesman. Having now seen Cocoa leather in the flesh, it's something I'll regret until I buy my next one.

Well I should bring the average way down! Currently 31.

In fact, I think I really annoyed the sales guy as he said through gritted teeth "2nd 997 by the age of 31; and a Turbo no less, impressive!"... I just smiled [:D]

So I think I better consider this option a little more...

Well I can't argue with the style comment [] however along with Alex, I'm bringing the average age down by quite a bit thank you [;)]

having never owned an older version, it doesn't wash with me [;)]

I agree at that at speed the rear screen is clear, however at lower speeds and when reversing in the rain it is not clear. Nor is it clear first thing in the morning...

Photo's and the configurator due not do it justice, alot of people asked me why on earth order it in Brown [:'(] however after seeing it alot have changed their opinion.
But the majority will always want Black, so the salesman will alway want to buy back (thus sell) black.

Strange that all the OPC's I visited where they knew I had already ordered a car (not from them) were all very complimentary about cocoa...!
Don't ever believe that the salesman is on your side, he's only thinking of one person...

Is the rear wiper a cost option on the 997C ??

I'm dreading the impending 30s (although I read this is when men enter their prime), never mind 50s or more !!! [;)]

From what I can tell, the rear wiper is a cost option (other than the TT) so this could have a bearing... just below £300

Online configurator keeps crashing on me[], so having to use the PDF file...

Perhaps we can twist Mr Turral's arm at the 997 Register day to offer us a tidbit or two on this.

You've got me going again now.

Can I afford it ?, Yes.

Can I justify it ?, No !!

Yves

You haven't even run your X51 in properly yet, and your already craving more power.........

I haven't got the Turbo yet and I am already[/b] craving more power!!!

I don't know whether my neck muscles have just acclimatized or something but I don't think the Turbo is actually that brutal when accelerating. I was expecting more from nearly 500 ponies. It's certainly a step up from a Carrera S though, especially that extra torque.

So that new DMS powerkit looks tempting if X50 is not retrofittable once it comes out.

Alex,

I met up with one of DMS's Guys today who has recently fitted a 'powerkit' to the 997tt. 550 ponies is quite a conservative tune apparently. For real men, 600bhp is the starting point !

The problem of course is trying to use it all......

Yves

More than 550bhp and you are looking at replacing the VTG turbos (lower lag) with bigger standard turbos (higher lag). So I think an ECU remap and a sports exhaust would be plenty to consider for now.

The new Ruf 997 Turbo program will be out soon, that will certainly be worth a look.

I certainly wouldn't be doing anything straight away though. I would probably start tuning after a year or two. That way I will have a better understanding of how and when to use that power, and also the tuning companies will have better products out there.

So not in a huge rush - 480bhp should be fine for now ;)

I have taken the "plunge" today 10k down, new turbo next year!!! and I will be bringing the average age down a fair bit too!! Not sure on spec yet will probably change my mind several times before its final. Alex I am surprised you managed to get a new turbo so quick I was quoted 12-14 months, but after pushing I managed to get one for feb next year, although I will try and wait for March!!

I am 33, I have Turbo being delivered hopefully in 2 - 3 weeks, I also question the customer profile stats. This is my first ever Porsche. I went with the rear wiper as I felt it would aid visibility. I am counting down the minutes for my delivery. Does the painshield give the bodywork a shine like a wax
or is it a film that will prevent stone chips?

regarding mats i called my OPC in bolton to specify mats and he told me not to worry about them as he will sort them out for me. I suggest you ask your dealer to sort it out for you

I in fact don't have an official slot allocated yet. My Dec build is an estimate by my OPC based on last years allocations from PAG.

I believe all UK OPCs will get their MY08 allocations in the next couple of weeks. So will know more then.
