Initial reviews have been full of praise - be interesting to read the more indepth tests on UK roads.
In the real world, can it be better than a 997GT3 ?
Chris Franklin at Center Gravity drives a LOT of different Porsches given his test drives after he works his suspension setup magic. When I was up there last I wanted to get more stability over bumpy b-roads.
Anyway, I arrived and he took my car out (before making any changes) on a test drive. He came back saying it was already pretty much perfect, and achieved 15mph more on a straight bumpy b-road than he would do in a GT3 (and he was holding my car's steering wheel with 2 fingers, compared to being thrown about on the road like crazy in a GT3). Anyway, we raised the car up another 2mm, dialed out a little front neg camber, increased the front castor, and I took the car out again. This time I was now achieving 30mph more than a GT3 would do on the same road!
So yes, in the real world, a Turbo is indeed much better Only on a twisty flat track would the GT3 be better.
If you define 'better' as faster, I certainly don't or I'd get an Mitsubishi Evo FQXIIV etc etc [8D]
Chris Franklin is the best though, no question!
Sure, I guess we all have our own criteria for 'better'. For me, going faster and being more stable at speed, are top of the list for 'better'. Obviously other factors like build quality, luxury, prestige, driver involvement come into the mix too, but for me at least further down. GT-R, Evos etc lose out big time on the prestige category.ORIGINAL: Rodney Naghar

Not with those Roman numerals you wouldn't![]ORIGINAL: Rodney Naghar

Bit of the same old "horses for courses" argument?

If that's an Evo 17, I seem to have missed out on a few models somewhere! []
Surely you define 'better' as being preferable to your last one - that would seem to reasonably fit the bill. []

Oh no the Postman just delivered an invite to drive the new Turbo at Silverstone in December. Clive do you fancy it?
Bob,
I still have some contacts in high places! []
I too have received my invitation for the Gen 2 TT drive in the post this morning. I was hoping James would be able to accompany me, but I'm just waiting to see how he's fixed work-wise.
It would be good fun for a few from 997 Register to go up on the same day.
My choice of dates are 1/2/3 December and 26/27/28 January.

Clive

I can't do the 1st or 2nd December and the 3rd is a difficult one, however I'm not sure I could wait until the end of January..[&:]
Anyone else fancy the 3rd?? or suggest a January one
It would be nice for a 997 catch up, Bob can provide the photos(and to tell us where the GT3 is different []) leaving me and Clive to provide the abuse

Dry day preferable IMO for this test track - my afternoon for 997.II launch was very wet and instructors were nervous passengers - looked like there had been quite a few offs in the morning... At the risk of stating the obvious it will be difficult to assess performance adequately at this track which in part also depends how many cars they have on track at any one time. I also hope they have ceramics on at least one car as it would be an ideal opportunity to assess the difference.

Last time I found that the wet rides are the only ones that really tell you much about the car!
The circuit is way too small, so much so that I couldn't see much of a difference between a gen II Carrera and a gen I GT3! So a car with the power of the Turbo won't really be able to stretch it's legs at all on the day. Perhaps given the nature of the car they will take us out on the main Silverstone track for some hot laps?

So we shall see what's best:
997.1 Turbo (with stage II + suspension) OR 997.2 Turbo

Forgive me Alex, but you are hardly likely to make an objective comparison...
Sure I am. Of course in the HIGHLY unlikely event that the new one is better to drive than mine, I will of course then point out the lack of supercar sounds along with weaker engine to regain the superiorityORIGINAL: blueSL

Now, who's going to be the independent and impartial judge?[] And what are the categories for scoring said cars? I wonder if Clarkson would be available........?
I'm just jealous because I don't have an invite.........[]
