At least for this generation there is a choice. If I had this option for my car then I would certainly not have gone down the HRE route (although I am now of course glad I did).

By the way, wouldn't those center locking Spyder wheels be a nightmare to change by anyone outside of an OPC?
 
I found this image of the bits making up the RS Spyder wheel and hub. Looks to me like the Porsche crested part can be removed, the tool on the right fits over the centre nut and you then use a torque multiplier to first slacken the nut (with the car on the ground), then jack it up and finally remove. Not sure if the thread is directional as it was on the CGT, I expect it is.

Torque is something like 500Nm which is equivalent to (roughly) 50kg at one metre if you don't use a multiplier. My tyre place says that's no problem.

The dealer is claiming it's an OPC-only job but I see it more as a restrictive practice to get the replacement tyre business, offered at bargain prices, of course. The dealer is even claiming that the tool on the right doesn't come with the car and has to be bought. "Very expensive", supposedly.

I think that is right. I assume the other side of the tool is socketed to accept a ½ inch drive or similar.

The picture appears to show a conversion kit -presumably for use on vehicles with a standard hub setup.

I have a strong dislike of dealers boxing you into a corner which is why I don't like the idea of wheel removal being an OPC only job - they'll be telling us we can't take our own engines out next, LOL. Similarly, I don't like the over-a-barrel position with the VTS subscription.

I think anyone buying the RS Spyder wheels will want to buy the bits they need to be able to remove the wheels if they want to.
 
The centre-lock wheels are now fitted to the GT3s and RSs as standard, and Turbos (and no doubt eventually other models) as an option.

OPCs, Porsche Assist and the various Porsche Specialists will have the correct tool, and owners will be able to buy this tool and, inevitably, there will be cheaper 'aftermarket' products.

In practice, few owners ever remove their wheels these days. There's no spare, just a 'get-you-home' (or wherever) sealant.

Anyone with Porsche Assist, AA Relay etc would just get their car taken where they want.

I don't think it will present any major issues at point of sale - and they do look very nice

Crikey! I see what you mean. Really glad I went for the Gulfstream G650 now[:D]
 
Good choice - the Citation X and G650 are two fastest business jets in history.

And what do they use to stop them? Carbon ceramic brakes.
