New Year/Winter Gathering 31st Jan

/bump Just rescuing this thread from "page 7 oblivion" Some sort of Midlands location sounds best to give the maximum number of folk a chance not to have to trek too far in the bleak midwinter. If we do go for that area, then as I dont know the area we need to rely on the locals for a suitable venue. That Rutland Water one sounds promising - what is there exactly ? Also a date needs to be arrived at (should be fun getting agreement on that one ! [:D])

I'm up for it, Rutland Water sounds good idea. Another possible "central" meeting place is Gaydon, lots of space and they would welcome a "gathering" - but its too close for me from personal point of view, so I would go for rutland idea! (Suppose i could go to gaydon via rutalnd?)

Hi all, Like to come along to this one, Rutland sounds a good idea gives us an 80 mile run to give the old girl a run. OK so I'll throw the first date into the ring Sunday 31st Jan or is that too early ??

Rutland Water - North shore would be my recommendation - is approx 7-8 miles west of the A1 at Stamford. The A47 runs east - west about the same south of the lake (its approx 3000 acres- biggest man made lake in europe). A606 (I think) runs in to the area from the north - east (Nottingham area). There is a pub with a largeish carpark on the main road and a cafe with a large carpark (£2 for the day I think) down by the water itself. Mike

Rutland seems pretty Midlands to me and would be nice for me to go to an event that doesn't involve trudging round the M25. [;)]

its ony 47 miles north of me, and I am just outside Northampton! Its about due east of Leicester! And, its probably about due east from cocacola in Solihull!!! I suppose if you live in London or the SE, anything past Watford Gap is the frozen north, but I think technically the "Midlands" extends to the top of Notts?

I'll see if I can suss the current set ups for the 31st Jan, maybe get some pics. I used to windsurf there a lot, but things change! You can drive round the lake, which is 'U' shaped, about 20-25 mles depending on the route taken with at least 3 lakeside carparks along the way. Rutland water is almost exactly 100 miles north of Central London and about 50 due east of Birmingham Mike

if we agreed a specific meet time at rutland, then this would allow groups to arrange meet ups at other parts of the country, to travel up / down / east together. 12 noon at rutland?

I think we need to just set a date, place and time and stick to it. 31st Jan, 12.00 at a location near Rutland sounds great. Only thing I'd suggest is to work lunch out. Some will travel a long way, and I'm just always hungry [&o], but it's easy to get delayed meeting up, then spend time kicking tyres whilst the various other halves and kids get bored, then find that the pub's stopped serving food. Perhaps set a time and place to eat, then people can choose to group up, come earlier, spend time huddling around open bonnets in the sleet, whatever. Those who have a longer trip at least know that food is sorted without worrying that it's going to be a late lunch after having breakfast at about 04:00! There's obviously no way of doing any sort of "organised" drive around the area without going into the tedious legal aspects of it. If there is a suggestion of a nice route to follow then everyone could choose to go along it separately if they wanted to. The drive around the lake sounds very good. [:)]
