New Year/Winter Gathering 31st Jan

Well that's just a short punt down from Nottingham. I've hardly ever met anyone else with a 944 (!) so sounds good. Chris

Mike, Good pics of the venue thanks for doing the recce, quite a while since I was last at Rutland, spent the day going round on the bike it was in the summer though. Be good to catch up again as we met at P & Polo, be nice to meet others and put faces to avatars. Andy

Does anyone know a post code for those with sat nav?? Or a google map I can follow? I haven't been to Rutland since I was about 12!

Hi this is the full address:- Bull Brigg Lane, Whitwell, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 8BL England, United Kingdom, You will need to head for the lake crusier carpark which is on the left with the watersports centre. NB There is another carpark on the right! Mike

Just a thought - do we know for sure that the cafe will be open in January ? Sometimes places like that close down over the winter months.

Cafe is open all year weekends - windsurfers launch nearby and the sailing centre is also very close. If they aren't open for whatever reason the same carpark ticket wil do for at least 2 other carparks which all have burger bars but no indoor seating and 1 that has the fishermans cafe but thats 100 yard walk from carpark. Will try to contact cafe. Mike

Ah.... Done some checking cafe is currently closed as in shut down pending sale! Fishing lodge is closed throughout January, leaving only the small burger outlet on the south carpark. This is basicaly a takeaway but has about 4 bar stools. Things change over just a couple of years! If its fine weather it would be ok there or there are a couple of pub I could check out Mike

How glad am I that I just checked in on this post! I think when its decided for sure (nearer the time) it might be worth group messaging or making a new post saying look here. I tend to stop reading threads once time, place are sorted and just go to the meet. Others may do the same?

But then you don't check the "faqs" area either, Ben....[;)][;)] I agree with you, but I don't know the answer. One of the problems with a busy forum, and the 944 forum is about as busy as it gets, is that you have three choices: 1 - Sticky hell, where you have to go to page 28 to get anything other than stickies. 2 - Faq everything in a sub-forum. We do this for long-term threads like technical stuff. Anything regularly updated, spares or spotting for example, and anything that's important short-term such as the winter gathering sticky. 3 - Sticky nothing, if it's not been replied to then it drops out of sight. A sort of natural selection if you like. Personally, I think the way we do it, number 2 (please, no Carry On jokes here [:D]), is the best compromise. Of course, we will always have to gently guide new users to the "faqs", and everyone will have to keep an eye on the events faq in particular. To be honest, I can't see that as a problem but I'd be very happy to change it if you think it could be done better. It's your forum, after all.

I think you've got it about right. Your always going to get the odd numpty who cant find the FAQ's[;)]

Just seen this, shame as I was up in Oakham last week and drove along the north shore. Will check my dreary to see if I can come along, if all goes to plan I may not be able to turn up due to playing with my prospective new toy....[;)] If that is the case, I might pop over and get some good photos from a different perspective....

Your new toy, flies!!!?......hmmm,hot air balloon, helicopter, plane, glider, airship, jetpack, handglider?????[:D]

Apologies up front for thread drift! I am hopefully moving from renting an aircraft to having a share in two! They do say that if it Flies, Floats or F**ks then rent it, but I am fed up with the restrictions with renting an aircraft and having to get it back on time, and minimum time flying if you take it for a day or weekend. I am seeing the current owner over the Christmas Hols to thrash out the details and then, due to losing my medical and job for 4-5 months this year, I have to re-validate my rating and do a quick conversion onto the first of the new ones. Once I am happy with the simpler one, I will then get my wobbly-Prop signoff (variable Pitch propeller, like gears on a car) and then I can fly the other one as well. If I am flying I will head up there (Cottesmore shuts Friday Lunchtimes, so no risk of bumping into a wayward Harrier) and see if I can spot you.. I have been renting this old girl, a Piper PA28-161 Warrior(Papped leaving a Charity event at Old Warden last year):

I will be firstly flying the Yellow Peril, a Rallye 180T (French aircraft designed for getting in/out of short strips and Glider Towing)

And then 'Echo Golf' a Rallye 180GT, heavier airframe than the Peril, but with better interior, more avionics and Wobbly Prop, a better tourer:
