Saratoga Sunroof - Bulk-Buy

Tom,

Thanks - that's a good explanation.

I wonder whether the lesser opening is perhaps a design feature. I'm guessing here, but the glass panel may well be more fragile and less flexible than the original plastic panel. If it is only allowed to open a small amount it will be subject to less buffeting and hence less stress.

The panel looks good (very good!) on your car ... I'm itching to get my hands on one now! Thanks again for your work on this.

Oli.

I managed to get out with the car today so I've taken some pictures for you all:

The cabin is lovely in the daylight with all the extra light!

I've had a go at adjusting the cams too. They are slightly different on both sides but I'm happy with them now. Word of warning: be gentle with whatever you clamp the new mushrooms with! They are ali and have been painted so they scratch easily! [:(] Also untighten them by loosening the cam first, otherwise there's not enough thread to put them back on when the cam is tight. Bear in mind that this is a bit of a fiddle at best and I've got a few ideas on how to improve this should it be needed in the future.

Apart from that, they're pretty straightforward to adjust.

Good luck with yours!

OK, OK, enough of the pretty pics. We're all jealous enough and just want some shiny-shiny rooves of our own!

Any more news on likely delivery dates?

Oli.

Tom,

Repaid for mine and they said it should be with me in a week. As my car is exactly same colour and age with a matching blue interior though, it should look equally as nice. Thanks for organizing the group buy I think it will be well worth the effort and add to our cars.

Apart from having first hand experience of just how shiny shiny it is I know no more about them than you...including the delivery dates. The e-mail sent on Monday says that they should be sent out in next 5-10 working days so they should be with you this week/next week.

What about the road test, wind noise ?

None as as far as I can tell. I took it for a good drive last night for about an hour and it's as quiet as the standard roof. Time will tell if this changes though and I suspect those that use their cars on a more regular basis will be able to tell sooner than I and may need to readjust the clamps. The clamps hold it down very well and the seal is pretty good. It is important to really push the sunroof into the roof firmly before raising the rear lifting arms and clamping it down, this makes sure the outer seal does its job.

Can someone explain the advantages of a Saratoga Sunroof over a regular one when the car is covered in snow?

Oli.

Question: did the old, 'original' Saratogas have these mushroom 'bobbles' on top ?

'bobbles'

Oi! That's MY word! And you're not using it correctly - it refers to the bit on the dipstick which collects mayonnaise, not something on the sunroof.

I think I'll charge 5p royalties each time someone uses it. Cheques, postal orders and PayPal (ugh! I hate the modern world) to the usual address please.

Oli.

All this wait for these roofs and not many pictures as yet, everybody shy ?..... Suppose I'll put some up of my 968!

The above image shows where the rear catch is bonded on, not too sure how long the bond will last looking at the void/unstuck areas.

The seal at the front corner also isn't filing me with confidence... I did pour a bucket of water over the roof (when closed!) and there were no drips or leaks visible so it's just something I'll be keeping an eye on.

One last note, the front catches/cams fold towards the rear of the car when locking into place, visually I'd have thought they'd look better going towards the front. It would be possible to change this however it would involve removing the catch completely & replacing the threadlock that appears to currently be fitted. I'll likely do this at a later date, today was just making sure it fitted properly & didn't leak! One very last thing.... The adhesive foam/sponge from the inside of the box is a bugger to clean. I ended up using cellulose thinners & a microfiber cloth, cleaned off in no time (but be careful!!!)

No photos from me as I have yet to have one of the things, although am very much looking forward to seeing one.

I re-ordered mine on Friday morning & received a phone call yesterday morning (Monday) asking if they could deliver it to me in the afternoon. Excellent service & very happy with the way Pilkington have dealt with orders & updates since the initial recall.

Mine arrived yesterday, but the support in the box for stopping it moving about was stuck to the glass, I used sticky label remover to get it off, but it still took me 25 min, I presume that instead of being transported level (as said on the box) it must have been horizontal for a fair part of the time, now to put it on the car and admire !

Fitted my roof[:)]

In style terms i think it fits in well with the period look of my car.

The front sunroof edge sits 1mm above the body work aperture with the toggles clamped up quite tight. No wind noise results even at very high speeds. In achieving this clamping the mushrooms have took to leaning forward. I think the solution is back off the adjustment screws on the mushrooms so that when clamped they lie flat. Then fill the gap between the steel clamp bar of the roof and the bodywork aperture with a small packing piece.

Can anyone else advise on the flushness of their roof fit to body aperture?

Thanks

Paul
