Spa Francorchamps and Zandvoort 2014

Good advice John. A quick glance at the BAT website did not reveal how to book instruction, can it be left 'till the day or is that too risky?

If you edit your booking you'll see that you can add instruction, presuming there are slots available.

Actually, I lied!!

Couldn't get on the Hook-Harwich overnight due trailer = TRUE -so staying another night = TRUE -and driving down to Calais following day. =FALSE....

Thought I'd better check -Hook-Harwich with Stena following day -LOL!

Very few tracks are as hard on brakes az oulton. Spa has a couple of big stops but is not hard on brakes.

True - end of Kemmel straight and just before the new 'bustop' chicane will do it for big stops . Book an early session with the instructor Ian , as the lines are important if you are going to follow Gruppenfuhrer's advice on braking in general [;)]

you also might want to tell the instructor your plan before you reach the first corner. [:D][:D]

Seriously, whilst there are 3 big stopping points, each is preceeded and followed by a section much lighter on brakes, so plenty of chance to cool down in between.

Indeed! So much so that in cool weather it is easy to get to bus stop with cold brakes and have a moment! (Even in a 964 :)

The Rennlist 964 boys did their Spa trip at the end of March:

I may have a Double/Twin Room available at Neil and Anne's B&B, deposit paid, Civic duty may take longer[&o]

Quite a spin, lucky boy - cant really see how it happened, unless he'd lifted?

2 combined factors I suggest:

Incorrect tyre pressures.

No aggression, no commitment and not pushing through the entire lap and so the tyres were cold. Typically I've spun early in a session when pressing on a lap too early before my tyres are up to pressure.

IMHO

One thing is clear: the line was wrong. A lot of turning action (as done here just before the spin) in that section can lead to a spin,

Maybe he didn't take enough speed off in the depression --- he never really turned in ---

He could have trailed the nose in and then hard on the throttle up the hill, turning the car on the throttle up the lower section of Radillon even though the car goes light ---

On a tangent, Steve and I will be catching the ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge on Saturday 12th July for the overnight sailing to Zeebrugge. Return Thursday evening 17th July ---

Anybody else planning this ?

We're doing Hull-Rotterdam overnight on the 12th and back on the 16th because the ferry is at 9 pm and Rotterdam is only a short drive from Zandvoort. Some are doing Harwich to Hook of Holland. Again using night crossings on the 12th and 16th.

I'll be emailing you some directions for the hotel but hopefully we'll meet at the last services on the E40 before the turn off to Vervier.

We are on the same ferry as Steve and a good few others including Kevin and john, I believe. This particular North Sea Ferries crossing is really good, I've used it on a number of occasions - very comfortable, great restaurant, casino. Should be a good start to the trip.

As I understand it, we will have a very relaxed schedule on Sunday as we make our way to Spa. I gather that the route is very tedious with
an awful motorway surface all the way there. Should we look for a bit of a 'road-trip' instead of going straight there or is there an incentive to get to Spa quickly?

Then we will do the same.

I checked out the cost of the van, trailer and race Cayman, --- the combination doubles to cost of taking the R ... so I'll put the cost towards a set of tyres [;)]

Boo Hiss !!

I've decided to drive the RS, although its going to be more expensive than taking the van and trailer, due to MOT, tax and insurance. Road trip with the guys though.

Looking forward to this guys.

That was the road we used from Calais to Lille last year. We won't be any where near that one when travelling from Holland. Happy for you to work out a route to lead us down. [;)]

Steve,

I'll have a good look, I'm sure we can come up with something interesting. A scenic route, good driving roads and a civilised lunch somewhere should suffice.

I've just been watching some of the Motors TV coverage of the WEC Spa 6 Hours (Porsche 919 still leading at the point where I stopped watching) I've set it to 'record' and will definitely be having another look as it gives added perspective to go with all the youtube clips that I've been looking at. That is one challenging track!

Mike Bert, who has his 2.8RSR looked after by the same guy as I do, apparently told my mechanic that he had to use all of his considerable experience (and talent) to avoid crashing there and couldn't wait to hand said car over to his co-driver Ziggi Brunn as soon as he could.

It's all making me nervous!

Probably a good thing Ian. I think its the best circuit in the world (Although I havent driven them all yet!) :)

A lot happens above or near 100mph. At these speeds big mistakes with the lines often lead to big crashes--particularly at Raidillon.

I remember an otherwise boisterous crowd looking very solemnly at their beers, on the terrasse of Relais de Pommard, the day before the trackday, having gone to see what Raidillon really was like. Even Des was silenced! [:D][:D]
