Sudden loss of oil pressure

Could be...and it's easy to remove. Maybe not so easy to work out if it's the problem. If you're lucky you might find something jamming it open.

Dave I have a virtually new OPRV sitting on the shelf - available for testing if you want it - maybe even SOR [:D] (don't even ask the price of new ones..)

I also have the one I replaced, which looks exactly the same & shows no sign of a problem, apart from I know it failed twice at Bedford last year so I won't trust it again....

Ed - a known good OPRV for testing would be great.

A broken pickup has me thinking what else is a "while you're in there" job to have a guesstimate of costs.

drop me an email if you want me to send it up to you

If it is the pickup, sump off....you could replace pickup (and strengthen), check / replace bearings (and piston rings?)

Now that made me chuckle. Will remember that one.

True!

I've worked out the following:

((Worst case scenario + investigative messing on) x hourly labour rate) + (parts + (hourly labour rate x while you are in there jobs)) = not going to see me and the family on the street

So, I'll just get it sorted and then drive it some more!

Dammit!

Garage tried the replacement OPRV that Ed very kindly sent me, pulled the DME and cranked it, still no pressure.

Chucked a litre of oil in, tried it - still no pressure. Tried another litre of oil - 5 bar pressure. Cranked it for a bit to get the oil flowing and then replaced the DME and started it up, full pressure and everything starting to quieten down.

So, just going to run it overfull and keep topping it up after every session so I don't miss my Trackday on Monday.

Only joking!

Ordered a new pickup and gasket as well as a set of rod bearings. Going to be a few other jobs while it's apart such as poly bushing the front ARB and getting the intake manifold cleaned and powdercoated too.

Phew...you had me going there...

[:D]

Good to hear it all quietened down. With any luck there was no damage at all. Mine was at full chat at spa so not surprising it caused some tappet damage.

I know some people strengthen the pickup - might be worth doing.

Definitely!

There will be topics about it and pictures on Rennlist, if you can trawl through the 'American' bullsh*t. Its required if you remove the balance shaft.

I've seen the Ishihara Johnson pickup strengthener so will get the garage to fab up something similar.

(Not that I was looking at Teflon crank scrapers or owt you understand)

The garage said that the tappets were still noisy but were noticeably quietening down as the engine ran so hopefully that's a good sign - god knows I could do with one! Maybe just maybe the film strength of the Royal Purple oil has proved its worth.

I've got a great relationship with my Indy's and they let me tinker away in the yard and use all their tools too - anything I do minimises my labour bill and they're very busy as one of the two main guys is off on paternity leave so it's win-win. I even got bought an ice-cream by "the boss" after a couple of hours working in the sun.

Got this far, going to take the inlet manifold to a polishers and a couple of powder coaters for some quotes. If it's reasonable I'll get it done, if not it can wait a few years for when I pull the engine:

It's going to be a big job if you're planning to get the sump off from the top...[:D]

It does seem a little counter-intuitive but I need access to the turbo to remove the cross-over pipe.

Btw - you'll have a delivery before 1pm tomorrow ;)

Indeedy, some pics are always great ;).

I am glad to see that the damage was not as bad as it could have been.

Slightly off topic, what engine mods are you running? I notice that you still have the cycling valve still in place.
