The 2012 PCGB Club Championship

Well done Paul, great driving again. And great to see Mark's hard work paying off, luck changing and getting some good results. [:)] From a spectator's point of view it was a great day out. The Porsche races were easily the best of the day. Especially the battle between Mark Sumpter and Pete Morris in race 2.

Good day although I was a bit grumpy, great Quali but a car that goes slower after 15-18 mins is a real pain in the @55[]

More great racing from the Club Championship - so glad I made the effort to go. Sadly my team mate Ian binned his #42 986 into the Armco on the way in to the Shell hairpin in Race 1. Paul's 968 look so clean! Mark Koeberle and Paul Follett both had podiums in both races: Paul through Druids in Race 2: Link to [link=http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Porsche+Championship+Oulton+2012&w=32332324%40N00&s=rec&z=e]all my photos from the day[/link] on Flickr.

Hi Chris, was great to catch up - awesome photos as usual. Good luck with the BRSCC Boxster racing [:D] What a great weekend's racing, well done Paul, Al and Mark (the 968 mafia) and of course Mad Pete (the class 1 mentalist). It was nice to see all the usual suspects, JP, Steve et al and we had nice weather too.

Paz +1 on what you said Chris - never stay at home when we are racing, your photos add so much to the season. Race report already up here [link=http://porschesport.com/Sumpter%20and%20Morris%20battle%20at%20Oulton%20Park.html]Oulton Race Report - Aug 2012[/link] and points are up [link=http://www.porscheclubmotorsport.co.uk/sites/default/files/files/05%20Porsche%20Club%20Championship%20Points%20after%20Oulton%20Park%2011_08_12.pdf]Points to 11th Aug[/link]

The properly produced video of the Porsche Club racing at Oulton Park in June is now uploaded for viewing on the Club's Motorsport website. see: [link=http://www.porscheclubmotorsport.co.uk/videos/gallery/cc]Film of the June 2012 races at Oulton Park[/link] This film was broadcast on Motors TV in early August. For us who missed it or do not have that channel, find an hour and enjoy. Lots of 'in car' footage, it was wet and yes not everyone stayed on the black stuff !! NB It has been uploaded in four parts of about 12 minutes each, so each race is covered in two of them.

So they actually use drivers' own VBox footage. That surprises me - its only 480 pixels resolution.

Really enjoyed watching those. I can't believe how eloquent you all were in your post race interviews......or should I wait for the out takes? [:D]

Steve - careful now !! I am not rising to that bait ........ now where did I put that lucrative film contract? Here is a link to the timetable for Combe on Monday 27th August [link=http://www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk/Documents/mon%2027th%20august%20timetable%20(30%20july%202012).pdf]Timetable for C Combe - 27th Aug[/link] anyone coming from here?

timetable for the last 3 races at Silverstone on 21/22 Sept here: http://brscc.co.uk/assets/timetable---2012-britcar-24hr---issue-1.pdf It is very tight at the top of Class 1 and Class 2 going into Silverstone For Class 1 -- Morris, Poctor, McAleer & Demetriou are still in the running -- as double points are on offer finishing all 3 races is very important. For Class 2 -- It seems to have become a shoot out between Alex Eacock and me for top spot but with Higgins and Koeberle not far behind anything could happen -- and often does! Current points table here FYI after the 2 races at Castle Combe last weekend. NB Every competitor has to drop their 2 lowest scores - so that does close the gaps between those challenging [link=http://www.porscheclubmotorsport.co.uk/sites/default/files/files/06%20Porsche%20Club%20Championship%20Points%20after%20Castle%20Combe%2028_08_12.pdf]Points to 27/08/2012[/link] For those of you following this race series the race report for Castle Combe is here: [link=http://www.porscheclubmotorsport.co.uk/news/sumpter_and_eacock_double_combe]Castle Combe race report 27/08/2012[/link]

And who's going to win the Rugby, we can discuss at Silverstone where I'll have some serious Munster Supporters and one Leinster one. This year is proving a classic year in the Club Championship with lots of variety and more twists and turns than a Poirot Novel.

A good summary but this thread is never complete without your own post race report.....so let's have it Paul! [:)]

FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT -- CASTLE COMBE 27/08/2012 This event was the penultimate round of our championship, and I came into it wondering what would happen? and would it affect the standings much? Testing at Combe is on Thursdays so with races on a Monday few of us actually tested. I know Sumpter was out and allegedly he did 200 miles to hone his already impressive driving technique. In Class 2 Mark Koeberle was also out a week earlier and when I spoke to him beforehand there was a quiet confidence about what he'd achieved with his track time! My only preparation was viewing my race video from last year, this is really helpful and I had convinced myself I would be 'on it' as soon as we rolled out into quali - would it be enough? Firstly a word about the BBC weather forecast. I am hugely impressed by it's accuracy, it said rain around 9-ish which would stop in late morning, with another round of heavier showers in the afternoon. That is how it was. Quali was at 08:30 and was dry and rain followed immediately, Race 1 was around lunchtime on a wet but slowly drying track and Race 2 was a re-enactment of the Rivers of Babylon! QUALI Sumpter ran away with it in Class 1 with the two Hartech Boxsters in close order behind, Morris and McAleer queueing up behind. Yes, you guessed it, Mark Koeberle stole pole in Class 2 despite a last minute effort from Alex Eacock, I managed third but was over a second slower. There seemed no question that the races were going to be wet so we set about converting the car to a full wet set-up, something we'd become experts at this season! RACE ONE The track was almost fully wet and intermittent wipers were required. Getting off the line was fun, lots of wheel spin and bit of jostling as some made a better fist of it than others. Mind you visibility was not great after the long run into the first corner at Quarry - but that improved as the field spread out. In Class 2 Alex got the best start, then me and Mark close behind - Richard Higgins was also in close proximity in his 968. Soon Higgins got past me but slowed later as his engine was overheating (more on that later). Mark also got past and started the chase towards Alex but was unable to haul himself up there. It finished Alex, Mark and me, with Higgins still running but slowly. Out front in Class 1 it finished Sumpter-964, Morris-996, Demetriou-Boxster. RACE TWO Much wetter and I went for a gentle drag off the line - this worked wonders as the grid eased it's way around Demetriou who had complete clutch failure. I was away ahead of Alex, Mark and Richard but that was not going to last long as Alex squeezed past a couple of laps later. I had a bit of space for a while and then Mark attached himself close to my rear bumper looking for a way past, the rain then fell a bit heavier and then more on his spin. The long start finish straight has a kink in it half down called Folly and water was sitting in long lines which you do have to cross somewhere -- aquaplaning was starting to happen and rear ends were twitching! Having escaped a mild sideways moment myself I looked in the mirror and Mark was wrestling with his car, little bit left, a little bit more right and so it went on until he did 3 or 4 full spins, ending up in the infield with the relief of an undamaged car - phew! He gathered himself to finish 4th in class. Richard Higgins has had a nightmare couple of seasons with engine failures in his 968 often associated with overheating. In fact I sold him my best spare engine to get him out of trouble a few weeks ago and he still had problems with heat. Anyway after the first race lots of head scratching revealed that he had been using an aftermarket radiator, yes it was the right size BUT was now believed to be the culprit as it did not have the complexity of core to get all the heat out - bingo. His sister has a road going 968 at the circuit, so the rad was borrowed from that and off to Race 2 he went. He had a new lease of life now and was able to drive to the full limits of the car, yes he caught me with a couple of laps to go and that is how it finished Eacock, Higgins and then me. Yes Sumpter won again in Class 1, what a competitor. Morris also second with Proctor and then McCullagh home in his 968. It was miserable and wet after the races, plus the fact that I was exhausted. So I did not pack anything up, I tied down my car shelter, made myself a bit of a meal in my campervan, put the TV on and hunkered down for the night! Woke to a sunny morning, so everything could be packed away dry and I toodled back home. Off to Silverstone now on the 21/22nd Sept, I need to finish all three races and race well against the others in Class 2 if I want to challenge for the top spot ..............

[:)] p.s. Having done a couple of trackdays at CC I have to say the qualifying times you guys came up with looked seriously impressive!

Will it be smiles or tears at Silverstone!!!!!????All still in the air! A whole week to get excited before next weekend[:D]

Although we have a big challenge coming up at Silverstone with the final Porsche Club Championship races this Friday and Saturday (21st and 22nd September) - my thoughts and very best wishes are with Paul Follet - a trued privateer "club racer" in with a shout for the whole Championship - go for it Paul and all the luck in the World mate. We also have a challenge - because it has taken most of the season of testing and changes (and then starting all over again with all the other settings for camber, toe etc) to discover the problem and secret of setting the Boxsters up to handle competitively - but we have been closing in on the right settings and for the last race at Croft - thought we were pretty well there (both cars on the front 2 rows of the grid) and a podium - but we made a bad call by fitting a new "special" clutch to Ben's car (to help him get off the line quicker against the rear engine'd 911's) and despite testing OK at Oulton the week before and lasting in race 1 - it failed off the start line - lesson learned - don't try new things in the leading car in the team! We did have a sticky clutch pedal in race one - but no time to change the plate and anyway didn't think that was the cause. Memories of a similar problem last year at Croft with a stiffer clutch that broke Ben's drive shaft off the line! - I must learn not to make that mistake again!!!!!! However the good thing was that both cars were within fractions of a second of the fastest 964, 996's and 993's - in fact there was only one of each slightly faster - the rest of the field well behind. Although Silverstone is probably our fastest track (benefitting the larger engine'd 911's) - if luck is with us this time we might just find the cars doing well enough to finish right near or at the top again - we will be trying anyway! Ben won there last season with his 968 - showing just how well balanced these are against the rest of the field (and how well a balanced smaller engine'd car can do) and it should prove a very interesting competition between several different models - all circulating within fractions of a second of each other. So if you want to see just how well your model can do against the others - come along and support yours this weekend. Baz

Baz, thank you for your support, .......... now if your 2 Boxsters could hold any of the other Class 2 cars up for me and then waive me past during the races that would be mighty helpful !! Hope you can get the upper hand in your battle with the 993's and 996's. It sounds as if you are very close indeed to cracking it. Timetable here again for those who might venture to watch, remember quali and Race 1 is on Friday and the other two races are at 09:35 and 13:10 on Saturday. ie before the 24hr race starts at 15:30pm http://brscc.co.uk/assets/timetable---2012-britcar-24hr---issue-1.pdf I note that the BBC forecast for Friday does show a distinct possibility of rain! --- my car broke a rear shock last week, a complete rebuild with a new damper body was required -- and when it went it managed to ruin two decent rear tyres as well - bummer. Then of course the corner weighting and geo needs re-setting. Thankfully a thorough check beforehand revealed 2 failed rear beam mounts on the suspension - just to buy them is now over £300, got them and managed to get them on the car before the alignment work. Phew! I think we are just about there now but cannot stop thinking of what other things might need to be checked. All this before I start work on improving myself ........ the driver being the weakest link in my car!
