Toms S2 restoration thread

Looking good Tom. Should give plenty of time for your filler to shrink as much as it is going to before they put it in the oven

Explain to me this alien concept of "finished"?![:D]

We are due back in the UK next July and Mrs M3 has secured a tasty new job which hopefully means my retirement can continue uninterrupted and I can focus on tinkering in the garage. Would love to get a 951 and prepare it for trackdays but our house in the UK only has a doible garage and both berths are already spoken for (unless I sell the TVR).

In all seriousness, one of the things I was thinking of doing was sourcing a load of front struts and converting them for inserts. Concept is that I build up a starting stock of cut down, drilled and painted strut bodies for people wanting to fit Koni inserts and then do them on an exchange basis. Was also thinking about doing front hubs with new wheel bearings fitted. I know the market is not huge but I'm not setting out to try to make millions.

Quick update: The car went into the paintshop a couple of weeks ago for a full respray. I popped in last week and they had made a start:

Just been again this morning for another look and things are moving along nicely:

They said they might be painting it today but if not then definitely tomorrow morning. Either way, I should be getting it back next week! Getting excited now!

In the meantime I've removed the bridge spoiler and repainted it and refitted it with new stainless steel hardware. I also re-bonded the fixing bolts on my one good hockey stick and refitted it with a new seal. I'm still missing a hockey stick for the LHS so if anyone has one they are willing to sell I would be extremely grateful. The car won't be complete without one!

I get it back on Monday Rob. Can't decide whether to document the re-fit or save it for the big reveal.

Family time over Christmas means it's going to be well into January before it is back in one piece.

No visit from Santa for me. [:(]

Was supposed to have the car back yesterday but the paintshop didn't call. So I phoned them this morning and they said they hadn't managed to get it back together yet. Nothing will happen over Christmas and then I'm back in the UK until the 2nd of January so it looks like it will now be the 3rd. Oh well. At least the paint will have hardened up nicely before I get anywhere near it!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

It's back!

Not sure what the paintshop were doing that necessitated such a delay but I don't really care now. Collected it in the pouring rain this morning and it's now back in my garage drying out. The paintshop had helpfully sealed up all the holes with plastic but I peeled all that off before taking this photo.

Going to put it back up on axle stands on Monday so I have good access for rustproofing inside the sills and for re-fitting all the twiddly bits. Will hopefully have it all done by the end of January.

I'm really pleased with it Paul. They said they estimated 6 litres of paint for the job and ended up using 10. Not being familiar with these things, I assume more is better!
Looking forward to getting it back in one piece again.

Teaser!!

Looking good Tom - get it out in the daylight and give us some more pics!!

10 litres does seem like a lot of paint - but as you say, better that than too little!! Did you have base & lacquer, or direct gloss?

[:D]

Just a teaser.......

I had it out of the garage today to turn it around so I have better access to the front and the passenger side. The opportunity presented itself for a wee teaser shot and I couldn't resist.

Still quite a list of things to be done before it's ready to be wheeled out for proper photos.

Task list:
Re-glue edges of interior round door and rear window openings on passenger side.
Re-fit rear quarter window on passenger side.
Re-fit under sill skirt trim on passenger side.
Fix hatch opening mechanism and adjust hatch closure pins.
Re-fit front fogs, front indicators and headlamp washers into front PU.
Re-fit front PU
Re-fit the innards, handles, mirrors and trims on both doors (need new window regulators first)
Strip, shot blast, repaint, rebush and re-fit driver side front wishbone (arrived today)
Re-fit front ARB
Re-fit front wheel arch liners.
Re-fit batwing and engine undertray.
Fit badges and decals.

I won't get all of that done next week and then we're away for a week for the kids half term holiday. Will get there slowly but surely.[:)]

Wise man say "always check all your bulbs are working before fitting light units in front PU and installing on the car"

Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

Shouldn't be a problem because the M4 bolts that hold the fog light units together and allow you to change bulbs without removing the entire front PU won't be seized will they...............

Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

Now faced with having to drill out the remains of the two snapped bolts and hope that enough of the threaded insert remains so that I can get new bolts (stainless) in.

An entire day spent on one task and it didn't get finished. Gotta love a 944.
