Turbo vs. S2

......coming back to the original topic

Over the last few years, how many turbo owners have switched to an S2?

and how many S2 owners have moved to a turbo?

A friend of mine moved from an '89 turbo to a S2 cab and wished he had done it earlier.

I think a 968 with its lights up is one of the fugliest frontal aspects inflicted on the highway.
Interesting ... How do you rate the Lamborghini Miura, that's got a very similar frontal layout ?

You can't say the 968 is as good looking as the Miura because they have similar lights. That's a bit like saying Cameron Diaz and Jade Goody are equally as beautiful because they both have similar noses!!

Having said that I don't think i've ever seen a picture of the Miura with its lights up so for all I know its looks could be completely ruined.

Well, I was not saying the 968 is as good-looking as the Miura. Far from it, actually. [;)]

PS : Cameron Diaz looks half-finished IMO.

Miura vs. 968 is interesting as I think the Miura is utterly gorgeous; I'll have mine in a classic 70's colour like lime green or bright orange, thanks (I haven't seen one with the lights up though - do they actually rise?)

I suspect the difference is largely the bulbosity (I like making up new words) of the 968 front. The Miura looks lithe and pointy, in comparison the 968 looks like it's had a low speed front end shunt that has folded the bonnet up. Also the Miura has lots of aggressive strakes and vents in contrasting black - the 968 looks like someone has unexpectedly bopped it on the nose and it's trying to decide if it's surprised or hurt.

More relevant than the 968 / Miura discussion I actually don't find the 928 front nearly so unappealing, similarly my main grouse with the 993 is that it doesn't look quite like a 911 should IMO rather than it is ugly in absolute terms - of course the 993 did away with the stupid flip-up lights.

To answer Ed's question in valiantly trying to get back on topic (though technically S2 vs. Turbo could apply to Audis) I have gone 220 Turbo > 250 Turbo (dog, never actually used) > S2 coupe > 250 Turbo and added an S2 cab alongside for a while.

My take would be that to leave standard (i.e. not spend a shedload on) and for road use an S2 is the better car, assuming you can find one with a high enough spec not to leave out anything you might miss from the Turbos standard fitments list. Most S2s have cloth seats and no air-con for example (later cars are better) and Turbos of a similar age tend to have leather sports seats and of course all have air.

For track use, or if you want to go significantly quicker than a standard S2 then the Turbo is the only choice, but you have to put a fair bit of cash into it after buying the base car to actually realise the potential superiority.

That might well be the first time I've ever posted anything truly on topic to page 5 of a thread on here [:D]

I used my Turbo as daily driver a few months ago and I just loved it... I used to take it out only for occasional use but since i have used it regularly it has come around great and the fuel consumption was 30+mpg at a steady rate. Mine is totally standard and I drive it fairly respectfully. It has only left me walking once in 8 years about a mile from my house. This was the usual DME relay problem. It was the original one from 1987 so 20 odd years is no shame.... My daily commute showed her alcoholic tendancy but, with the mpg down as far as about 12mpg. If you look after a Turbo and dont go horsing and abusing it will stay reliable with no big bills. No 20+ year old car is ever going to stick abuse

A problem I have at the minute is the brakes. The calipers seem to be sticking. I had it up on a friends lift and he said that it was a notion to me... I am looking into getting refurbed units off my OPC Agnews in Belfast for they said that the bores that house the pistons could be oval shape. Its not cheap but if I want the owl car right I am going to have to save up the readys for them[:(]

Are you sure it's not just plate lift?

I have felt in recent years that AC is a must have on a daily driver, however I have been driving my S2 recently and because our summer has been so utterly useless I haven't missed the AC. It just reminds me how much I have missed using this car (especially given the 7 grand I have put into her in the last 10K miles). I think I am going to go back to using the 944 as my every day car again and just take what I can get to get rid of that POS GM thing sat aside (already cost me 700 quid this year in fixes, time to end the pain).

If you want leather this is easy to get hold of, I bought my black sports seats for 250 quid from an 86 turbo that was being scrapped.
