what did you do to your 944 today

Ha ha! You need very little road to overtake with boost assistance...........and if you are thinking about an S2, well, dare I say it you may as well start looking/save a little more and go down the turbo route! After all, we all know the turbo is the marquee model in the 944 stable! And in all seriousness, if you fancy an S2 for a bit more oomph, you may again find yourself chasing a turbo at a later point for yet more oomph! Cut out the middle man and do yourself a favour while turbo values are still where they are as I've a funny feeling we will see values rise more and more for decent turbos as time goes on. In saying that the S2 is a lovely motor.............looks just like a turbo! [:D] Stuart

Hmm, not sure about that one. I test drove both, and while the thrust of the boooost is enjoyable, the power delivery of the S2 is smoother and more usable for me, and I think I could get to my destination faster in an S2 than a turbo. (Though the turbo might be faster overall in a straight line). We'll see, I might just stick with the Lux and settle down and have children and suchlike instead [&:]

Lol I understand! You just need to learn how to keep the thing on boost and you'll blast any S2 into the weeds! Especially with a few modern upgrades which would see you kicking out 300+ BHP. I nearly bought an S2, I'm glad I didn't. But we are all different! Good luck with whatever road you go down..........and at what speed! [:D] Stuart

I think that is a debate that will rage on! The reason why I bought my Lux is because it was in good shape and came up locally at a good price. If an S2 or turbo does the same, I will probably buy it too! Thanks, and the same to you [:)]

I was the same Sandspider, when I bought my S, I just wanted any 944 in good shape for the right price. However, almost a year later and the itch for a Turbo was getting too much, so I have just bought a 220bhp model. I really do love it, the power delivery is great imo. I have had a number of turbo cars over the years, and I think I just prefer them, that or a large capacity NA for effortless grunt. Difficult to say how much quicker in reality the 220 Turbo is over my S on normal roads, but the kick comes in a lot earlier, which I prefer for normal driving, when you just want a quick shove. The S pulls very well through the top end, but it's all happening at 4k onwards. On the move, the S feels a little lighter on it's feet somehow, maybe because the Turbo is stiffer and has less body roll. I love them both, but the Turbo will be a keeper, and I'm glad I bought one. I'll be very sad to see my S go, especially in my favourite colour (Guards Red), but I can't really afford to keep and maintain both of them. With two 944's and a Honda S2000, I really need the third car to be something more practical, so a cheap estate for dog & camping duties will probably fill the space on the driveway.

As for what I have been doing on my 944 today.........yesterday I noticed that when I put the key in the hatch lock on my Turbo, it didn't feel particuarly positive. I tested this theory and found that I could open the lock with anything that would fit into it!! So not exactly secure!! So today I removed the lock barrell to see what was up, as you can see, someone previously has removed all of the lock wafers... 20140807_184405 by Hallsy01, on Flickr Not sure why, I would guess it was due to damage rather than replacement, as if you are determined you can rearrange another locks wafers to suit your key profile. We had a few wafer locks at work that I stripped down, but I can't find any with the same size barrell, so they are not big enough. I reckon I'll pop into the local locksmith tomorrow to see if he can sort it for me. I could get another, but I don't want to have to use two keys.

strange that the lock wafers are missing.... a point to note re 944 locks..... I bet that if you line a number of them up the same key will fit more than 50%.. it's common for the locks to be worn as tested many years ago at a PCGB event when one of us locked himself out of his car.. no problem plenty more keys there to open it for him....:) Pete

Wafers are the same as VW locks. We have a tub of locks and wafers that we use to re key cars and vans. Just go to your local scrap yard and buy as many old VW locks as you can and re key the lock.

MOT - [:)] emissions at idle 0.420% vol against a limit of 3.5% HC Reading 99 ppm against a Max Limit of 1200 ppm Tester remarked what a clean old bus it was. Pleased it passed anyway George 944t

My guess would be that the lock had been damaged in the past so they were removed. Possile barrell was replaced, but if you went to bother of removing them due to replacing barrell, you'd think they would have tried to re-key the lock.

Colin - yes, that is an option, but my local scrapyard would probably want an arm & a leg for enough locks!! I'll pop down to the locksmith in the morning to see if he has any suitable wafers. If not, scrappy it will be :)

I've had a knock coming from the front since I got back from Germany, it looked to be top mounts so replaced it with these "Dibed" ones that appear to get good reviews:

(I cleaned up after the photo) I must say I'm pretty impressed with the quality and price! I got the engine stripped down more yesterday as well:

my Black T is at Porsche Leicester having a holiday whilst they fix it's air con,it really needs its air con being black in this weather.Dash might be coming out apparently.

Do the OP Network have any qualified technicians for a 944 aircon? I thought they had all left and set up as indie's by now? Brave to let 'em pull that dash, they will break more than they fix Mark. George 944t

They have some long serving techs at Leicester,Two know 944s and older pork inside out (service manager was a tech and owns an S2 himself),I have watched them strip a 70s 911 and rebuild it bolt by bolt, better than new, these are good guys, plus they charge very competitively with Indies. They have done lots of work on my 944s,not like a regular dealer these guys are enthusiasts that's why I use them!!!!!!

The guys at Leicester do know these cars, (Marks in particular!), even the workshop manager owns an S2. There were 3 944s there Thursday when I called in, and I was in a Renault!

had planned to take my niece from Canada for a drive, but discovered there was a bit of a gasoline smell. Looking into it a bit further revealed that there was a nasty drip beneath the car. So the drive only went as far as dropping it off at RGA Porsche who are open Saturday afternoons.

hot sun here today, and the OE alarm went on the blink again as it does when the car interior gets hot, plus 30C. plugged in my spare, no problem. The original will be ok below 30 degC, I have got used to rubbish German electrical's now. George 944t

Went to change the damper adaptor that connects to my AN fuel line and saw that the damper was loose. The bracket had cracked previously and been bodge welded up, a hard day on track and it had started to come apart again. Luckily it was just the bracket edge and it hadn't damaged the rail itself. Sanded down a spare rail I had, a coat of primer, gloss black and then 3 coats of petrol resistant lacquer. Decided I wasn't going to replace the plastic rail cover so wrapped the injector harness in red self-amalgamating silicon tape.
