what did you do to your 944 today

ORIGINAL: 944 man My Turbo has gone for major reconstructive surgery. Jeremy, the previous owner, took the car to a respected Fen-area specialist who charged him for properly repaired sills on both sides. Im not sure what the near side is like, but the off side was bodged with filler and neatly painted. Naming and shaming will follow.
TWG Motorsport Ltd are the company in question.

I need a full size spare series two rear carpet. I want to change my collapsible spare wheel for a full size part and a 1986 or 1987 model year part will be required.

You can split the hatch catches and clean out the inside. You just drill out the spot welds holding them together and clean the internal parts. You could immerse them in brake cleaner etc and never get all the old grease out. This is one split open

It's quite funny really, when I got the car home I assumed that the ill fitted carpet was down to it bot having the correct collapsible spare, to the point that I sourced a replacement. A few days later i was in the boot of my other 944 and it dawned on me that the huml in my new one was a lot larger!! Some re-arranging of the spare and then the carpet fitted as it should!! Do you know the option code for it? Was it only on 86 & 87 cars? Likewise, at what point were split rear seats available from? Not sure if mine are original or not.

It wasn't an option as far as I can recall. Very few cars had a collapsible spare (only the 931 comes to mind) before their widespread adoption for the 1988 model year.

ORIGINAL: Hallsy Looking good Chas. Did you get yours from OPC, if so, how much did they charge? I need one for my Turbo as it has a poor quality one fitted at the mo. As for the ICE, spill the beans!!?? I was getting excited about a nice new, retro headunit for mine, but the Mrs has convinced me to swap my Becker DTM High Speed from my S. A Becker does look right at home in a 944 imo!! As for me, today I have been cleaning and protecting the interior of my Turbo, and it turned out nicely, even if I do say so myself!! Check out the full size spare rear carpet!!
Many thanks Andy. I did indeed get mine from an OPC. It was around £40. Saying that, their cut etc. did make it a simple affair to fit. Sure I would improve things if I fitted it next time but but overall I am relatively pleased with the result :). Almost all of the copies I have seen do not look as kosher as the item I fitted (mainly in the ends of the badge; where it bends around the corners). I understand that ROY924GT off TIPEC is meant to produce an OPC spec item as are apparently KPP Porsche off eBay). Me being me, I figured I would settle on what fitted right first(ish) time :). Damn you Andy, I shall be thrown off the forum at this rate with my talk of ICE. It basically involved me fitting a sub, albeit one of the old school SQ flavour ;). I wished to fit my Phase Linear Aliante 12" in but the box was a little large (PL speciify that it will work well in a box half of its size). But I did have a retro Precison Power 8" item hanging around in a suitable box, as well as a Genesis Series 3 4 channel amplifier (if they were good enough for the Aston Martin V600 they should be just fine with my steed :)). Along with the time alignment/crossover adjustment of the modern Alpine (CDA-9887R for the audiophile geeks here) along with its iPod/iPhone input I actually for the first time experienced a sound comparable (if not possibly better) than what many modern cars offer (bar me tweaking it casually over time!). The above is completely removable for those thinking I may have ruined things. I would have put the Becker Mexico Pro in residing in my 205 as of now but the processing power and features of the Alpine are hard to resist (I relied on crossover boxes and EQs in previous cars with that!), especially with the Bluetooth handsfree option (very handy today with the new fines). Like many, I am not a fan of putting holes into cars wherever possible. Clearly all of the welding on BL crap has put me off doing so! Colin, many thanks for the info! I may well consider that if these items get that bad again. The grease did become clear in the end but obviously there could be a multitude of sins hiding within them (i.e more grease as you say!).

Simon - I didn't realise that, I had assumed that most cars had the collapsible wheel as I didn't seem to recall seeing a full size spare rear carpet for sale often. I'm hoping the small amount of space lost will make any odds as a full size spare is preferable, if I ever need to use it!! Chas - sounds good. I doubt I would go to the effort of fitting a sub in mine (where have you fitted it?), but maybe an amp and some uprated speakers would be a good addition to my Becker DTM - shame that the stock front speaker location is so poor. I really faniced an old school high end Alpine, but as I say, the Becker does fit in nicely with the dash, whilst not looking too flashy - and they seem to be quite well made. Look forward to seeing some pics :)

Changed the sun visor clips on my black car, drove it on a hot day and one broke, the other was sweating!??? Popped into Porsche centre Leicester, they had them in stock!!!! No car the age of the 944 where a main dealer stocks an obscure part like that, epic!!!

Did the visor clips last year, same problem - hot weather and they go like chocolate when they get old Oil & Filter change today...usual messy job[8|] George 944t

Fitted new sun visor clips-as one broke coming back from Le mans classic. Phoned OPC Reading and had 2 new ones within 36hrs posted and all for less than£10. Cheers Ron

On Wednesday/Thursday I have to find an offside sill. The body man says that an original sill will be a massive overkill because most of what it offers wont be used, so Id be interested in hearing of any pattern suggestions.

Yesterday I fitted a suede covered Momo 07 to replace the leather covered 78 that was on there, something I should have done 3 years ago as a race car without PAS and leather steering wheel is a silly idea IMHE, I was always suffering from sore hands and wrists trying to grip on to the thing. The 07 also has about an inch and half more dish which I needed as the wheel was a bit far away.

Replaced the passenger window switch with the £15 non gen one I bought off e bay (very good) fixed the casing on the passenger seat belt retainer plus replaced the seat bolts with some new black ones again from e bay (they look much nicer black) Did some other odd's and sods like replacing the wipers and tired looking screws as I came across them. Finally tackled the sunroof gears, unfortunately they did not cure my problem as the cable had wound back and knackered itself in the rear wheel well.

If you dont need a full sill then your body man should be able to make the bit that he needs.

Took her for a wee spin. Forgotten how much grip there is with the wider rear wheels! Excellent drive. Only spoiled by idiots pulling out too slowly in front of me, then pootling along at 35 in a 60 zone...

You need some booooooost! Makes 4 cars in a row pootling become a non issue![:D] Stuart

Ha! Alas, the roads around me are fairly narrow and twisty, and I think even with boooost I'd struggle to overtake. Still considering an S2 to replace my Lux though, especially as the Lux is a little slower with the 17" Cup 1s back on. [:D]
