what did you do to your 944 today

i am planning to test every section with x2 3” bung cones that i have already fabricated . one will be a sealing bung,.. the other has a male connector which i will hook up to my leakdown gauge off the compressor, and check for any leaks by compressing the section and spraying with soapy water.

they may look like crap weld to an expert by i tried my best to prep surface well before hand with a flap wheel then accitone,…and the welds are a circular pattern going back on each twice with a solid puddle so deffinately not the pigeon droppings i have done when i was younger tryung to weld seals up in old sheet metal.

i could do a much neater straight weld but i thought a circular puddle would give more strength as i’ve puddled a larger area on both sides of the stainless pie cuts , and have good penetration.

by no means perfect of course as i’m a totally ameture welder and this is my first attempt to welding anything at all substantial like this , but for the cheap crappy welder i’m using i’m quite happy

i actually have a tig but have not yet got myself a gas bottle and learnt how to use it properly - i quite like my cheap and chear full mig ,…but at least i’m trying ,…this is all a massive task withought the welding to be honest,…espeacially on your back and not on the ramp

the proof is in the pudding once i’m done [;)]

Spent a couple of hours chipping the rust scale away from the inside of the rear valance / exhaust mount. Unfortunately the bottom of the valance is pretty rotted and the repair section is NLA from Porsche. However I think I've managed to find one available as NOS for a decent price. I bet everyone has a similar looking rear valance. Someone has a rear section from a cabrio listed on ebay and the corrosion looks almost identical to mine. Must be something to do with the exhaust being so close to it...









 
2 weekends ago I took the brave decision to replace my sun damaged and severely cracked dash board , a job I was not looking forward to . I had bought a mint non cracked dash for What can only be called Rocking Horse Sh*t money but needs must , the only problem was my dash is dark blue and linen and the new one was black and linen, but I bought some leather/Vinyl colour treatment. I must say I was not convinced but after 7 careful coats it looks fantastic.

Then D day when the change over was to be made I just went for it and I must say was pleasantly surprised how easy it was I had my brother to help as the dash, (new dash) I did not want to damage . All went so smooooothly I'm not now scared to work on my Lovely 944.

After fitting my newly refurbished proper 944 wheels I took it to Kop Hill Climb on Saturday this weekend, not to compete but had a lot of interest . Sorry I've not uploaded any photos but I cannot work out how too .

BUT YOU HAVE TO LOVE A 944

i remember taking my dash out on my own in a crappy rented garage on my first 944 lux to repair the dash when i was 18 ,…it was so satisfying ,…especially to change it from brown to black [:)]

 
Seems a shame this thread has been neglected of late, let's get back on it now the better weather is here!

Today I painted my rear wiper arm. It's been needing done forever as was more brown than black. Got a rattle can of quick drying matte black and gave it a coat, came up lovely, why did I not do it sooner lol. Also topped up my clutch reservoir that had been at the min mark, well forever! Now sits at max. Changed over my wheel centres which Gerry Cater-Racer kindly sent me many months ago, much better than the old cheapo ones that my mate chucked in with the wheel refurb a couple of years ago, they had started to discolour and generally not look very good.

Also treated her to a good wash, hoover and chamois dry. A good day all in.

Seeing as my rear wiper probably hasn't been used for 15 years, I decided to remove it, and the motor. Found a stainless bolt and nut to fill the hole in my toolbox. And it's all good [:)].

That cannibalistic approach seems to be quite favourable. I don't understand it however. I use my rear wiper often when out in the wet, and would badly miss it if it was gone!

Also, I don't get this "it's a left hand drive wiper, useless for RHD" either. I think I have a 21" blade on my rear (which is optimum after trial and error in my opinion) and it provides a nice big clear bit to see through from my RHD cockpit. Pity there is no scoosher................

Today I added a bit of ignition timing at idle, to stop it occasionally stalling, dropping quickly to idle. Currently at 20 deg, which seems high but happy.

Sulked slightly as the clocks are out at the mo, awaiting a new sprocket.

Handily the old sprocket also broke the plastic carrier. So I clocked forward a spare odo, which also has a broken sprocket.

hi Stuart, funny you mension this as it’s something i wanted to ask you about.

id like to put my kids in the back of mine in summer but was concerned about the lap belts being illegal now ? what do you do for yours , do you use the lap belts or have you a conversion of some sort for the belts to go over there shoulders?

been thinking i may have to enginier something ?

It gets wet when I wash it [;)]. Other than that I think it's been caught in a downpour 3 or 4 times :(.

24,000 miles done Stuart, nearly all of them stretching it's legs on my favourite 100 mile back road loop [:)].

I've got 3 point belts in the back of my MY90 car which were standard by that year. Maybe you could pick up a set of them to replace the lap belts? I think I read somewhere though that to retro-fit the 3 point belts to an older car, you might need to drill some holes (easy enough for a man of your talents!). Not sure, be easy enough to suss out if you have access to a later car with the 3 point belts to compare.

Not sure about legality of the lap belts these days, but I would definitely want the 3 point ones for the kids for the added security in a bump or heavy braking moment to stop their faces meeting the seat backs!

I don't think they'd be any worse to get kids out from than a standard 2 door car that needed front seats flipped down and/or slid forward. I agree if you had wedged an adult in there it would likely me more difficult to extract them in an emergency. Small kids not so much.
