The needle had brought part of the shaft from the motor that powers the needle with it so was completely broken. I had to buy a replacement, all fitted and back working again today.
scam75 said:Yup fair points Pete. I'm using AMAC Engineering who've done a number of 944 engines including Eldavo's so it won't be a first foray into the engine with them.

You want 1mm of squish/quench on the HG. So you need to know how much has come off the block and what the measurement on the wear tab is to calculate how thick a HG you need. You want the 100.5mm one, Alistair will make sure that the mounting surfaces are RA50 or better.
Call Partbox/Co-ordsport and ask for Paul Dolan - tell him what Cometic gasket you want and he’ll look after you. Got mine from the States in 5 working days at no extra charge.

I defo could live without the pain of a busted engine!! I keep telling myself it will be for the greater good, which of course it will be. I will have custom made liners, new wossner forged pistons, new mains and big ends, crank checked and polished, new sump gasket (was leaking a bit for ages), all seals and gaskets replaced. Mating surfaces clean and flat, a cometic HG to cope with the extra boost from my mods, valves re-ground, new valve stems, new water pump, the list goes on. I will be circa £5k lighter tho.........
The bottom end finally came out today, still needs some ancilleries removed before it's sent away. This has saw the job grow arms and legs as the block ain't been out ever before, rings were done in situ previously. The oil cooler pipes were a major PITA, now off, and we've had multiple minor breakages of brittle sensors, wiring and pipework which I suppose was inevitable after living under a turbocharged engine bonnet for 32 years. So the build back up will need to be slow and methodical ensuring all these little issues are attended to as we go.
Short motor and head should get AMAC next week, they will have it for a month or so, then more fun begins when it arrives back all shiny and new! Will be more fun and satisfying building it back up than extracting it was, that's for sure!!
Probably tail end of October at earliest before it's back together.
Cheers

I raised a concern with Alastair about your Wossner piston issue, and he told me it was to do with the coating on them. He has assured me the Wossner pistons he has sourced (£640 plus VAT incidentally) will work perfectly will with the cast iron liners he has "lined" up. He did not mention your warranty claim. Should I be asking further questions?
Also, mentioning "warranty". How does the land lie if Alastair's build does not go to plan? Would AMAC (or Wossner) be covering the bill to have the engine removed again? This is all new territory for me and I'm at the mercy of Alastair. I do need to speak with him about this to cover all eventualities.
I just want a nice shiny rebuilt, reliable, working short motor to refit. How hard can it be???? [8|]
Let me know guys, you are my eyes and ears!!
Cheers

968 plastic deflectors are superior, and relatively cheap from Porsche.chrisg said:Not hugely technical but I replaced both track rod ends yesterday ahead of having the track and front suspension set up. Did find that the aluminimum air deflector was now a two piece unit with the fitting holes still on the front shock and the main body lying on the track control arm....

Did some more tinkering yesterday - front right wheel bearing had developed a bit of a rumble - taken apart, regreased - new rear grease seal and adjusted up - feels much better but not driven it yet.
Rechecked the belts tension - balance belt out of synch so adjusted it to the timing marks and got the tension right - engine sounds much better @ 3-4k rpm.
Need to refit the PAS belt, empty the breather tank and then refit the undertrays followed by a test drive later

Swapped car stereo with better quality to give more options, upgraded door speakers with pioneer..results fabulous []
Overall a good result all round today.
Today I continued with the strip down and got the wastegate removed and torque tube detached from the clutch housing.
Found one of my many exhaust leaks at the crossover pipe to wastegate joint, the bolts at the joint had completely rotted through and the flange was loose!
I spun the torque shaft by hand and could not feel any play or scraping but it does make a noise, probably comparable to spinning a skateboard wheel. Should it be totally silent or is some rotational noise normal? The rear bearing casing looks in good condition and can clearly see some grease on the outside of it. What are people's thoughts on refurbishment of the torque tube? Should I do it now I have it removed from the car or leave it alone until it becomes more obviously worn out?
It's come out pretty nicely I think! Turns out it's quite straight forward to refurbish the faded original when you have got everything worked out. A lot better than paying £125+ for an original (which you can't anyway because it's no longer available!) or £20 for a replacement which is just as bad as mine was anyway from eBay.
It really lifts the dash so I'm quite pleased with the result!
