hi Stuart, funny you mension this as it’s something i wanted to ask you about.

id like to put my kids in the back of mine in summer but was concerned about the lap belts being illegal now ? what do you do for yours , do you use the lap belts or have you a conversion of some sort for the belts to go over there shoulders?

been thinking i may have to enginier something ?

Daniel

Hi Dan

I've got 3 point belts in the back of my MY90 car which were standard by that year. Maybe you could pick up a set of them to replace the lap belts? I think I read somewhere though that to retro-fit the 3 point belts to an older car, you might need to drill some holes (easy enough for a man of your talents!). Not sure, be easy enough to suss out if you have access to a later car with the 3 point belts to compare.

Not sure about legality of the lap belts these days, but I would definitely want the 3 point ones for the kids for the added security in a bump or heavy braking moment to stop their faces meeting the seat backs!

Stuart

hi Stuart, wow that’s brilliant, can’t believe i didn’t know that they fitted these to 944s, thought they all had the lap belts!

well that’s very promising then at least i don’t have to reinvent the wheel on this one ,. as i already had planned the contraption but i bet i over thought what needed to be .

is there any chance you are able to send me a photo when time allows ? so i can see what they have done where .

if your not able to on here i could always on you my number for an easier whatsapp photo if not? ….. would be great if you could if not i’ll start trying to find something online,… just may prove hard to get the right pics of location ect

thanks Stuart

There are a couple of strengthening plates welded into the chassis for the belt mechanisms to attach to - they’re actually behind the C-pillars almost part of the boot pressing. You’d need to weld them in and make the right holes in the right places as well as possibly replace the 2 carpet sections as think they are moulded to fit around the seatbelt roller.

Today I added a bit of ignition timing at idle, to stop it occasionally stalling, dropping quickly to idle. Currently at 20 deg, which seems high but happy.

I’ve been having this same issue before I can get it to the tuners - I’ve been mucking around with afterrun fuel cut but haven’t touched the timing, I’ll compare current with previous tables but you might have inadvertently saved me a lot of head scratching. I’ll look at making a bit of a “timing valley” around idle so that it always drops back to the required cell.

No worries Dan. I'll get some pictures today and get them over to you. If you want to DM me your mobile number, that would be great!

Cheers

Stuart

I would also guess the 72,000 miles I've covered in mine is slightly higher than Paul's miles during ownership........................:ROFLMAO:

24,000 miles done Stuart, nearly all of them stretching it's legs on my favourite 100 mile back road loop [:)].

Fair play, I thought you'd be closer to 2.4 miles.......................:ROFLMAO:
Ha ha, when it clicked over 100k miles 3k miles ago, I thought that's knocked £5k off it's value. It's done less than 2.4 miles in the last 2 years though.

Time to do a Ferris Bueller and get it up on axle stands and run a few tanks through it in reverse.......................what can go wrong!!

I've moved from 12 Deg to 20. Seems way better. Was never an issue when warm, only cold when I got to the end of the road, which I attributed to a sticky idle valve, but swapping it made no odds.

It does pick up better from idle now too, so win win hopefully.

Ferris Bueller, what's that, probably a bit before my time. Anyway found what seems like a decent MOT place nearby, and as soon as it's done I'm putting it back on the road.

Our 1986 924S doesn't have rear seat belts at all,nor does it have the mounting brackets in the boot behind the rear seat back.

However ,it does have all the bolt holes but no holes through the rear squab so when I replaced the worn vinyl/fabric seat set a few years ago with a S/H grey leather set from a 968 ,IIRC, the new squab came with the belt apertures.

I bought a set of appropriate rear belts from James at Only 9 Spares from a 944 he was breaking, plus all the bolts & he obligingly cut off the 2 brackets but have yet to fit them.

Welding only entails 4 short welds per side -2 at the hatch side & 2 on the wheel well inner.

Really, cult 1986 movie for those with an interest in cars......

Takes his old man's Ferrari out for a spin when he pulls a sickie from school, then sticks it on axle stands and runs it in reverse to "remove" the mileage he put on. It then breaks free and smashes though the doors and off down a cliff!

Had you as older than me Paul, I'm 48.........

Might be worth having a poke around as I think some post 86 cars did have the upper brackets for 3 point belts hidden behind the trim. I guess different markets may have had different requirements. Only lap belts in the back of the cab though!

yes i am eager to pull my side carpets away after work today and have a look behind on mine ,…it’s a 87 turbo so may have nothing , but will see.

im also thinking i may fit more modern units on it from maybe a vw to help with the bewer more easy pull for when i get kids in and out.

i’ve changed belt units on my 86 lux many moons ago from the breakers and they were awful to retract and not in the best condition after all these years - modern ones will prob be the route i go unless i find someone that sells one for our cars thats reasonable

looking forward to doing it though!

Googled it to see if my mind was playing tricks and found this - [link=https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/45804-add-3-point-seat-belt-in-rear-for-kids.html]https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/45804-add-3-point-seat-belt-in-rear-for-kids.html[/link] which indicates post 86 (oval dash cars) do have the metalwork in place which matches with what I remembered from a thread on titanic about 20 years ago!

also [link=https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=665162]https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=665162[/link] and finally in our own forum

which indicates rear carpets may need to change to cover reels,

Fir tree clips in dark grey arrived. Decided against trying to colour them.

The 2 on the left are new and they look better than the original, faded, burgundy one on the right. £3.50 for 20 delivered.
