Thanks it’s a hard call as the rust is very minor but I guess will get worst

looking a bit sorry for herself but great things planned [:)]

There was a pair of NOS genuine sills on ebay a week or so ago that went for around £300.

Kicking myself now as they are about £350 each from Porsche :(

My car had a genuine new sill fitted to the left side some years ago, but more recently when I had some rust seen to and the car resprayed the person I employed made up a sill out of sheet metal. They got the profile wrong and it's probably not noticeable to anyone but me it comes in at a different angle than the bottom of the wing. So after all the other jobs are out of the way something I want to get done properly!

yep doing everything myself never done it before but it’s not proving to be that hard :rolleyes:

Fancy helping me with my rear valance? :ROFLMAO: Once I've got the engine out will need to find someone to do the couple of bits of bodywork I need doing.

Today I didn't work on the car but I managed to buy myself a pair of NOS Continental Sport Contact N1 225 / 50 R16 for front of my Turbo.



Yes they are a few years old (2014), but very hard to find a set of matching staggered tyres now for the 16" turbo wheels.

Will eventually be sticking some nice 17" or 18" wheels on (after the engine rebuild is completed).

[:eek:] Ooooh 18” I heard the car will spontaneously combust and the wheels explode if you fit 18”

Well past their best at that age, I had some 7 year old Pirelli's on the rear of my turbo a few years ago. Persistent snap oversteer told me it was time to replace them.

Depends on how they are stored, as I said these are NOS, so haven't been fitted to a car they have just over 7mm tread.

The current ones fitted to my turbo are slightly older than these and it was driving fine before I took it off the road, no signs or tread delamination or sidewall cracking (unlike the 2 year old Pirelli's that were fitted to my 996). Everyone knows Pirelli's are ditch finders :ROFLMAO:

I've never had a problem with Continental tyres.

Will probably get Michelin Pilot Sport when I upgrade to some 17" or 18", which shouldn't be much long after the engine rebuild [s5]

I love Pirelli's for bikes, I've used Rosso Corsas for over 20 years on litre sports bikes, but they only last a season/3k miles. I like Conti's too, I'm on my 4th set for my daily car, great until they get down to the last 3mm or so, then performance drops off, though not as unpredictable as the Pirelli's. Michelin PS2's are my favourites on the turbo, I'm on the 2nd set of those now. Chris at CG measured the hardness of the Pirellis when I was there, and said that was a factor of the aging process.

Been in the regional side many times and the register side once or twice - we all know the magazine prefers their engines elsewhere . . .

 
Just got the car back from Augment with new Engine mounts fitted and also a replacement oil cooler at the rear. Car noticeably smoother as one of the mounts had collapsed completely.

Not today, but my 50yr old knees have meant my usual time stealing hobby of racing mountain bikes is on hold. So back to turbo tinkering for the last couple of weeks.

1. Finally found the reason for low volts when running, despite healthy alternator and cables.

It was the connection on the back of the starter motor. Looked fine, but clearly wasn't.

2. Worn rotor arm/dizzy meant I decided to go wasted spark finally.

I used a Bosch coil pack, some 968 leads I had hanging around. Interestingly the Beru 16v plug ends are easily swappable to 8v and far better quality than the Magnacore leads.

3. Did the lighting loom upgrade, then took some time to waterproof the relays.

4. Tomorrow, weather permitting I shall be replacing the early offset hubs to some late ones, mostly as I need new disks and already have spare hubs and disks, ready to fit.

Added bonus that they're stronger.

Some research suggests it'll work camber wise for road use, if it isn't it'll need a re-think or camber plates.

your correct [:mad:]the repair panels don’t match the compound curve of the body

so today I spent several hours cutting and re-bending very pleased with the result [:)]

Can I drop the torsion bar and carrier brackets and keep everything else in place? Just need enough room to treat and repaint behind the bracket [8|] the car is on a ramp so wheels are supporting it

I’m guessing I need to release handbrake cable and flexi brake pipes.?

 
Well late hubs do indeed work on an early car. The wheel does sit slightly further out, camber looks ok on one side at maximum on the strut. Other side needs a tweak. Need to do some measurement.

i had to change a track rod end, so it’s going to need an alignment anyway, once I’m happy it looks right.

 
Not difficult to get the toe close with a string line. And front camber close with a spirit level, if you have level ground.
