What did you do with your 996 today?

Great write up. You must summarise what kit you fitted - something I plan to do next winter...

Had my first experience of a track day in the form of a taster sessions at Rockingham today. Had an instructor for the first part who helped me build up my confidence in how my car performed & allowed me to fully enjoy pushing myself & the car. I even managed not to stuff it into the tyres, unlike the poor sod in his GT86!

Changed the coolant today and fitted low temp thermosta. Then noticed that the rubber coupling to the front transfer box had splits in it so my next project.

Hello do you do all your own maintenance ,that's great if you can ,I need to change my back bellow s because they are split ,can I attempt this myself do you think , cheers

Frank .

Hi Frank if your a bit mechanically minded it is easy I have a ramp I can use. you could do it with drive on ramps if you put them at the rear of the car. I do most of the maintanence myself but when it comes to geometry and wheel alignment I get the pros to do it. But oil change ,plugs manifolds those sort of things I do. I keep all the receipts etc for proof and I stamp my book myself. Some indies I've spoken to just send the cars somewhere else If they don't have the no how.

Oh really ok ,yes I'm ok but I would really like to change the exchaust ,it has a sports exchaust on it an I find it very noisy at times ,even though it's a nice deep sound ,I was thinking about putting the originals back on,but I've herd the manifolds can be a nitemare with the 6 mm small studs ,thanks for your reply ..

Frank .

Studs are a real problem if you cant get them out.

it can be done by a pro in situ but how to get the car there idf you've started but cant finish

The studs agreed are a problem but there are people you can call out to remove the studs I bought the jig that aligns the drill bits up for you then you retap the thread you have to be careful not to drill to deep though. When I changed mine four or the studs were really solid but I used a mini conductor that heats the bolts with an electrical current and not a flame. Once they were heated they came out easy.

Thank you so much for that you obviously know your way around the porche engine ,I'm still learning this 996 ,I had a sc 3000 1979 air cooled 911 and don't know much about the water cooling version I have lol ,but im learning ,I had a service on engine and gearbox plus all porche parts an filters £500 ,which I thought was good ,sanspeed of Bexleyheath did it for me ,

i love the car it has 70,000 on the clock an it seems very responsive ,but it seems to do what it likes ,sometimes it won't let me lock or unlock car, have to use key ,then alarm goes off if I don't press key fob a hundred times lol ,my brother say s it's because I don't use it enough ,but lately with the hot weather I have. Do you have a good parts place I can use at all,I'm sorry to pick your brains, but I'm still green lol . Thank you for your help . Cheers

Frank .

hi Frank Richard will read these points and he'll be able to point you in the right direction. There's been lots of chat about the micro switches on the doors etc. You said that your at bexleyheath you should try and get to brands hatch on Wednesday night the kent region have there club nights there. Welcome to the 996 group any way

Frank, the fob stops working after 5 days if the car is not used. The owners manual covers the process which as I recall is to turn the key in the lock which effectively reactivates the fob. You can then use the fob as normal which should avoid setting the alarm off.

As far as parts go, depending on what you are looking for you local Porsche centre can be the best priced. Not necessarily the case but recently I bought a replacement courtesy light for the door as the lens was missing. Cheaper to buy the lens from Porsche which came as the full light fitting including bulb than it was to buy just the lens from a breaker. I also replaced the clutch pedal rubber as it had split - I could have bought three of them from Porsche for the price an independent was looking for one. Bear in mind as a club member there is usually a 10% or so discount offered on parts.

Regards

Thank you so much Graham you guys have been so helpfull to me so much appreciated , I'm still learning the 996 , only had early air cooled sports coup before , many thanks ,

regards frank .

Thanks Simon ,yes I want to get to the club meeting at the kentigon brands it's very local for me so mayb see you there ,appriciate all your help .

regards Frank .

Yes thanks Richard ,these studs do seem to be a problem for us ,and they are very small 6mm. ,I wood really like to go all stainless steel for the exhaust , I know it's expensive ,but better In the long run don't you think . Thanks

regards Frank .

If it wasn't done long ago you mind find huge amounts of WD40 put on a few days before will be enough as the Nuts will have been off then

There is another release fluid in a blue bottle that you can use - it much thinner than WD - Used to use it in a garage 50 years ago when I did an apprenteship (Only did 18 months as I deceded I didn't want to work in a garage all my life!

Thanks Richard that's a great bit of advice ,I really want to make sure this 996 is a good as it can be ,many thanks

kund regards

Frank .

WE all start that way, hopefully we can carry on Had a holiday booked in Coningsby for a week. 996 decided to develop a water leak Do most of my own work but could not find the leak as I could not Took it to Wolverhampton Porsche who said it was leaking from the top of the engine cost me 85.00 Would/Could not tell me what it would cost Ran it down to a Garage in Aberdovey that I was recommended by a 911 owner in the club (Cost me 9.00 to get back to Shrewsbury - 2 hours on the train!!!) Phoned him next morning - Gave it an hour pressure test and its coming from the front of the engine - hopefully a pipe.

Hoping it an easy job Will advise
