What did you do with your 996 today?

Today fitted my gt3 cup splitter and fitted a new low pressure Aircon pipe (the long front to rear one) it was corroded and leaking under the clamps. Not an easy swap as you need to pull out the carbon canister and move the fuel tank filler out of the way to feed the pipe into the scuttle area.

Fitted some new parts.

As a comparison the state of one of the old coil pack heat shields compared to a new one is shown in the photo. This was one of these jobs that is not technically difficult but takes a surprising time to do. Getting the forward bolt removed is simple but the rear bolt was much more awkward. My socket set would turn just 1 notch each time to undo the old bolt / tighten the new one due to the limited access.

Second job was to fit a new horn. Again not technically difficult but had to accept I was not going to get the job done without removing the bumper. Supposedly you can replace the high pitch horn without removing the bumper but that probably assumes the nut has not been sat in place for 13 years. It is certainly a lot easier to apply the required leverage with easy access to the nut.

Lastly fitted the two missing rubber grommets under the airbox. I would not mind betting a fair percentage of 996s are missing these grommets as they are not that tight a fit on the two spikes on the underside of the airbox so could easily drop off when removing it.

Regards

I can get my front PU of in 30 minutes so its not a difficult job Hope you cleaned the leaves out around your radiators I was surprised how cheap the spark plug covers where direct from Porsche they really do offer good prices sure they where under 30.00 for both Thanks for the info PS MY air box grommits where fine

You work faster than me: I think it was nearer 45 minutes to get the front PU off. It felt like most of that was spent teasing the plastic plug type fasteners out of the wheel liners.

I had cleaned the radiators out a couple of months back; wish I had noticed the horn was not working at that time (I only noticed when I had cause to use it at a cyclist who rode of the pavement in front of me). I agree about Porsche parts and their prices. I have had quite a few parts from OPC Glasgow this year. Always an efficient service and the price is often better than specialists.

Many specialists use OPS for supply so must add a bit to cover costs TRy EuroCar Parts they do Genuine Porsche parts often very reasonable

It was the same when I had a (ur) quattro Always said to my fellow members try Audi first. New Dissy was 90 from Audi 200 from other sources Starter was the other way round

I changed mine and noticed that the one that's rottern bad at one end has a drain pipe that exists over the cover.

Is yours a Convertible if so make sure you remove the rear speaker covers and make sure the drain hole is not blocked (Both sides)

Sunday just gone joined up with London Region with Edwina& Nick and a punch of other great friendly people. Started at 6.00am for a fantastic tour around Londons icon nick land marks and what a great tour it was. A very very well organised event with these guys and a great breakfast venue ending up in the Portabello Road. Thanks Ed n Nick a great event.

Changed my front strut top mounts, coffin arms and front trailing arms tonight and now the car feels like new :) wish I'd got my finger out and done it sooner!

Starting to 'fiddle' with the 996 to get it pristine... three small dents taken out today by Dean at Speedy Dent repairs in Nottingham... trusted this guy for 10 years with my cars.

Replaced all 6 ignition coils, not too bad a job if you don't mind you fingers getting filthy!!

Now waiting for my 2 coil heatshields to turn up as the current ones are more rust than metal.

Today I had a Dansk Sport exhaust fitted to my Targa.

The exhaust tone sounds a little more rich and deeper than the original.

Very pleased with the result.

Andy

I think mine was Dansk and it is still as good as the day I fitted it

The one thing you need with an Exhaust is that it is not too noiy on a Mpotorway and this certainly is great on a motorway

ENJOY

After having the new exhaust fitted and a service yesterday I treated my 996 to a wash, clay, polish and wax.

Really enjoyed today even though it was hard work!

Andy
